4 A MESSAGE FROM VENTURA COLLEGE PRESIDENT KIM HOFFMANS, R.N., ED.D. The impact of a quality education on an individual’s life cannot be under estimated. An education is essential to moving one’s life forward, discovering new opportunities, and creating strong support for future generations. As the new President of Ventura College and as a Board Member of the Ventura College Foundation for the past three years, I am fortunate enough to see how education transforms students’ lives on a daily basis. Ventura College students come from a wide range of backgrounds. Out of 13,000 VC students: • 30% are housing insecure • 40% are the first in their family to attend college • 50% are food insecure • 60% survive on a household income of $36,000 or less for a family of four Many of our students’ paths are not easy – some are single parents, many work multiple jobs, and a few even admit to skipping meals in order to purchase textbooks. Despite these trying barriers, over 2,000 Ventura College students graduate each year and over 800 transfer to a UC or CSU annually. As the first institution of higher education in the Ventura County Community College District and Ventura County, Ventura College for 94 years has been providing affordable and high-quality education to our community. In partnership with the VC Foundation, we embarked on a voyage in 2007 to develop the first Promise Program in California. In the past decade, in excess of $4 million was awarded to over 14,000 first-year students. Simply put, Ventura College is a Flagship. Webster defines flagship as, “The finest, largest, or most important one of a group of things.” As donors, you are part of our precious crew contributing to the success of the VC Flagship vessel. With your generous support in partnership with the hard work of the Ventura College Foundation crew, approximately 5,831 students were served by the Foundation’s programs. Please take a look at page 24 of this report to grasp the wide reach of your philanthropic gifts. As a fellow crew member and donor aboard the VC Flagship, I hope you find tremendous fulfillment in the work we are doing together to support VC students in breaking through their individual barriers to achieve their academic dreams. I am often reminded of fellow VC Pirate Alum, Aurelio Manzanarez and his quote from our 2016/17 Gratitude Report: No matter how difficult life seems, you can always accomplish your dreams. Sometimes we just need a little help from others to help us achieve those dreams. As you dive into our annual Gratitude Report, you will meet students and supporters who have positively impacted Ventura College and the Foundation. Your support is making a difference and enables students like Aurelio with educational experiences that set them on a course to lifelong success. As a precious crew member on the VC Flagship, may you enjoy your voyage through the 2018-19 Gratitude Report. Many thanks, Dr. Kim Hoffmans

I wanted to take a moment to personally thank you for all your contributions to the Ventura College Foundation. Without the invaluable assistance of donors like you, the stories that are told throughout this Gratitude Report would be incomplete, at best. Simply put, your time, talents, compassion and contributions are vital to the Foundation and its student recipients. The themes of this year’s Gratitude Report are trust and, naturally, gratitude. As you read the stories and get to know the personalities we share with you here, we believe you’ll feel the power of these guiding principles at work. These students put their trust in both themselves and Ventura College – especially the Ventura College Foundation. After taking bold steps and working hard to turn their dreams into reality, they also feel a deep sense of gratitude for the assistance provided by the Foundation and its donors. Your investment in them empowers them on many levels – alleviating financial strain, strengthening our local community, brightening their day-to-day lives and steadily building their confidence over time. What you do to make all of this and more possible is not lost on them. We want you to feel the same level of trust in all of us here at the Foundation. We hope you are fully confident that your donations and contributions are making a real difference in real lives of real students here at Ventura College. On behalf of myself, the entire Foundation Board of Directors and the many thousands of students who have benefitted from the Foundation’s ever-evolving and always-vital support programs, we thank you and salute you. You make everything we do possible. Thank you, Rob van Nieuwburg
6 Christina Montrose has overcome many challenges in her life. She grew up in a household with an alcoholic father who insisted college was a waste of time and money. Even though she was enrolled in honors classes and edited the yearbook at Bellingham High School in Washington, Christina chose not to attend college after graduation. She briefly attended Northern Arizona University in her 20s, but quit after a close friend took his life. After marrying her husband Don, they both decided they would go back to school – with Christina waiting until their children were in elementary school. Don earned his degree but tragically died from heart failure at the age of 37 in 2012. At the time, their daughter Dominique was just four years old and son Dante was only one. Her heart shattered and the young family’s income cut by 75 percent, Christina gave every ounce of the energy she could summon to parenting two grieving young children. She also decided to downsize and cut expenses to make ends meet. “Over the last seven years, we’ve traded possessions for experiences and I’ve tried to show my children how to live life to the fullest potential possible,” explains Christina. “We don’t have a large house or a fancy car, but we have traveled, lived and learned together, always trying to find joy through our pain.” One day, while Dominique and Dante were both at school, Christina decided it was time for her to ardently pursue her college degree. If nothing else, she wanted to serve as a strong example for her beloved children. She enrolled at Ventura College with an eye towards earning a business administration degree – with a focus on non-profit organization management. OVERCOMING GRIEF TO ASSIST OTHERS IN NEED CHRISTINA MONTROSE “I want them to know that no matter how old you are, you’re never too old to accomplish your goals,” explains Christina, who also works part time and devotes time and energy to school PTA, Ventura Adult Center and Girl Scout Leader duties. “There are days when we all want me to quit so that I can focus my full energy on them instead of studying, but we have all agreed that education is important, as is following through on your commitments.” Seven years have passed since Don’s untimely death, and today, Christina views her education as “an integral part of us rebuilding our lives together.” Equally important has been the San Buenaventura Women’s Club and Stan Weisel Phoenix Scholarships she received from the Ventura College Foundation. “I intend to finish my degree and show my children that hard work will always pay off, no matter what your age,” says Christina. “My children see how hard I work and know that a college education is a path to a better life.” On track to graduate in the spring of 2020, Christina plans to then launch a non-profit organization that helps teenagers and young adults who are grieving the loss of a family member. “Widows from my community post that most teenagers and young adults often have to grieve alone, which increases their vulnerability and reduces their resilience,” says Christina. “I’m inspired to start a not-for-profit organization capable of supporting bereaved teenagers and young adults through group sessions, online therapy options and Outward Bound-style travel opportunities that focus on grief and healing.” Christina knows none of this would be possible without the assistance of the Ventura College Foundation’s programs, scholarships and donors. “The Foundation scholarships that I receive allow me to focus on school and my children without having to worry so much about work in that mix as well,” explains Christina. “I’m able to pursue my education and still enjoy time with my children thanks to the Foundation. The flexibility of online classes, flexible schedules, the scholarship financial assistance – it has all allowed me to keep being a mom as my main priority.” PHOENIX SCHOLARSHIP

8 Growing up in Santa Paula, Edward Ramirez recalls his parents always emphasizing the power of education. “My mother and father were never able to attend college and wanted my siblings and I to take advantage of the opportunities available to us,” recalls the now 23-year-old Edward. After graduating from Santa Paula High School, Edward enrolled at Ventura College, where his sister was already enrolled in the school’s nursing program. She initially told him about the Ventura College Promise, the Foundation’s program that waives tuition fees for qualified first-year community college students. “I was pretty excited. Even before I graduated high school, I knew I wanted to be a nurse,” says Edward. “I knew I wanted to help people, and following in my sister’s footsteps felt like the right fit.” During his first semester of nursing school, Edward found out about the Ventura College Foundation’s scholarships from his VC School of Nursing & Allied Health professor, Theresa Winter, MSN, RN and RNC. He applied and was thrilled to learn of his acceptance and award. “When I found out I was awarded, I felt elated,” recalls Edward. “I usually fall in that weird middle class, where my parents can’t write me a blank check, but I’m also usually disqualified from financial aid.” FOREVER DRIVEN BY THE POWER OF EDUCATION EDWARD RAMIREZ Edward also got to meet the donors of his various scholarship awards: Jim McGee and Norma and Israel Magaña. In addition, Edward received the Paul and Bessie Carter Nursing Scholarship. “I was inspired to hear their reasons behind creating the scholarships, honoring loved ones who are no longer here with us,” says Edward. Edward doesn’t take that honor lightly and understands just how impactful the scholarships have been to his life and education. “I had been trying to work and go to school and these scholarships were the difference between being able to sleep at night before an exam or needing to use those hours to study,” explains Edward. Edward is currently in his last semester at Ventura College. After graduation, he plans to earn his bachelor’s degree and then commission into the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. From there, he hopes to continue his education all the way through to a master’s degree. His end goal is to work as a nurse practitioner. He realizes he has been empowered by the Ventura College Foundation and its many invaluable and influential programs and donors. “I’ve had many sleepless nights, but I would have had countless more if I would not have had the help from the scholarships – and the kind and generous hearts behind them. I believe that knowledge is power and I’m especially eager to learn. Every day I hope to show my parents that I will never waste these opportunities.” VC PROMISE SPOTLIGHT VC PROMISE SPOTLIGHT I KNEW I WANTED TO HELP PEOPLE...
VCF | GRATITUDE REPORT 2018/2019 9 Daisy Castillo has held a lot of responsibilities in just 19 years. A first-generation college student at Ventura College, Daisy grew up in a low-income, single-parent household in Santa Paula. In fact, she still helps her mother raise her two younger brothers. After graduating from Santa Paula High School, Daisy enrolled at Ventura College but was unsure about what she wanted to major in. She also had serious doubts about being able to afford college. Thankfully, Daisy learned about the David P. Bianco Textbook Lending Library and was awarded the Ventura College Promise. “It really saved my life,” remembers Daisy. “Because it meant I wouldn’t have to spend hundreds of dollars on textbooks, and instead can help my mom buy groceries or use my money towards gas to get to and from school.” Daisy immediately immersed herself in student life at Ventura College, becoming involved with First Year Experience (FYE) and Extended Opportunities Programs and Services (EOPS) on campus. She also became involved with the Associated Students of Ventura College. “The Ventura College Promise was a huge contributing factor when it came to me being able to afford attending Ventura College,” explains Daisy. “Without it, I don’t know how I would have paid for college.” Now in her third semester, Daisy says her second year on campus “has been a breeze” thanks to the Foundation and its many helpful programs. “I know the Foundation has me covered with free textbooks, EOPS has me covered for the books I was unable to get at the Lending Library, and the Foundation also provided me with the Don and Sandy Greenberg Scholarship to cover the cost of school supplies.” Daisy has been so inspired by the support she’s received that she decided to serve as the Associated Students of Ventura College President, where she advocates on behalf of the student population on vital topics surrounding an Early Alert System – designed to provide extra support to students who are falling behind academically and new legislation such as AB 705, a law that requires California community colleges to ASSOCIATED STUDENTS PRESIDENT– AT AGE 19 DAISY CASTILLO maximize the probability that a student will enter and complete transfer-level coursework in English and math within a one-year time frame. “Without the amazing services the Foundation and the rest of the campus provided me with from the second I stepped foot on this campus, I wouldn’t have time to be so involved in student life. I am so grateful for the Foundation and its donors.” After earning her AA degree in communications studies at Ventura College, she plans to transfer to the University of California, Santa Barbara. “After UCSB I want to go to grad school,” explains Daisy. “I ultimately want to work as a student affairs professional at a community college. I want to help change students’ lives, just like everyone at Ventura College did for me.” TEXTBOOK SUPPORT SPOTLIGHT I AM SO FOR THE FOUNDATION... GRATEFUL TEXTBOOK SUPPORT SPOTLIGHT
10 Erick Pina doesn’t have to think back too long ago to remember his darkest days. “Just a few years ago, I had no direction and felt like I had no purpose,” remembers Erick. Things have changed a lot in a short amount of time. That’s a testament to the power of education – along with Erick’s ability and drive. “Now my life is significant because education has given it meaning,” says Erick. “Going back to school has reconstructed my whole life and helped me become a more determined and successful student.” Before rediscovering education and meaning in his life, Erick spent a lot of time adrift and depressed. Addiction gripped him at times. He wasn’t sure what to do or where to turn. “During my 13 years of drug addiction, I lost nearly everything, including my daughter,” recalls Erick. “My life was out of control, but I was given one last chance to redeem myself and seek recovery.” Erick seized that chance, and aggressively pursued a series of life-changing goals. “In December of 2016, I decided to stop doing drugs. I had finally had enough of the cycle of addiction that I had created. So I created goals for myself to complete within four months. My top priorities were to return to my daughter’s life and get back in college.” TRANSCENDING ADDICTION TO RISE TO THE DEAN’S LIST ERICK PINA While also working two jobs, Erick returned to school by enrolling at Ventura College. He struggled at first, but eventually earned A’s in class, which he admits brought him “tears of joy.” Now, the 31-year-old recovering addict, Sociology major and doting single father is a passionate student who’s flirting with a 4.0 GPA and on track to graduate from Ventura College in the Spring of 2020. He’s even found a spot on the Dean’s List and is also deeply involved in Ventura College Circle Kiwanis International Club. Erick is grateful for everything Ventura College has meant to his dramatic turnaround. In addition to receiving Heizer Family Phoenix Scholarship funding through the Ventura College Foundation, he has never shied away from utilizing the college’s various facilities and resources. “Despite my challenges, I learned to overcome them by using resources available to me here,” says Erick. “Resources like the Stan Weisel Tutoring Center have been extremely beneficial to my academic success.” Erick became so familiar with those resources that he decided to serve as a Ventura College Foundation Student Ambassador and peer leader for the First Year Experience (FYE) program. “I’m able to help students come to campus, help them with the resources that we have, and show them what’s available to help them be successful,” explains Erick about his peer leader role. “I also lead campus tours and just let them know we’re here for them if they need us. If they ever need someone to talk to, or to answer any questions they may have, we’re here to help them become successful on campus.” Erick looks forward to giving back and “paying it forward” down the line. His next educational and career step is to enroll in a UC system school (and later law school) and become a paralegal or lawyer – with a focus on assisting in the welfare of children and families. “As one who has experienced both sides of the court system, I’m determined to be a positive influence in my community and help those who need it the most,” explains Erick. “Because of my daughter, my career goal is to work PHOENIX SCHOLARSHIP

One day, I plan to give back to my community and make an impact in the lives of those around me with the knowledge I’m gaining now.” He’s forever grateful for the opportunities, assistance and connections he received from the Ventura College Foundation. “To me it has meant a whole new life,” says Erick. “A whole new way of seeing life through a different lens. It’s completely changed who I am. My family sees me as a different person. Anyone who sees me who knew me in the past is very proud of me now.”
12 Elijah Walker knows exactly what he wants to do. Where he wants to go. And who he wants to take with him. You might say his dreams and goals are pretty far out. “Space entrepreneur,” explains the 25-year-old New York City native and Ventura College electrical engineering student. “Asteroid mining and space vacations.” The way Elijah sees it, we only have so much time here on this Earth. So why not dream, live, and create big – and maybe even extend those aspirations far, far outside of Earth? “Life is super quick,” says Elijah, whose father passed away when Elijah was just 13. “That’s why I want to strive for something great. There’s no reason people can’t have vacations on the moon. The technology exists. It’s just not been fully researched or applied…yet. I want to bring all the pieces together to manifest a better future.” When Elijah ends up making it out there and up there, Ventura College and the Ventura College Foundation will get big-time assists. After serving as an enlisted sailor in the United States Navy from ages 18 to 24, Elijah left his final post at Naval Air Station Point Mugu and decided to stick around the area. Just as he had researched his way out of New York and into the Navy’s aviation technician program, the ambitious young entrepreneur (he already has his own creative production company) discovered that Ventura College would be the ideal landing place for the next step in his ongoing evolution. Elijah settled into his new home in Oxnard, enrolled at Ventura College and soon landed on the Dean’s List with a perfect 4.0 during his first year. During this time, Elijah learned about the National Science Foundation and UC EVER-EVOLVING SPACE ENTREPRENEUR ELIJAH WALKER STEM SCHOLARSHIP Santa Barbara’s ESTEEM (Enhancing Success in Transfer Education for Engineering Majors) scholarship through the Ventura College Foundation, and ended up earning one for himself. “I’ve met amazing people,” says Elijah. “The Veteran’s Resource Center is filled with a lot of veterans who know the system, and there’s a lot of faculty who are veterans also. So they help a lot. I’m learning and enjoying myself here every day.” Elijah also understands the vital role played by the Foundation and its personnel, programs, and donors. “I’m grateful for the Foundation,” says Elijah. “There’s a huge financial burden lifted off of me now, so I can focus, learn and excel. I’m very thankful to the Foundation for that. They give me all the opportunities that I need to be a successful student.” Elijah plans on earning his associate’s degree and then transferring to a four-year university to complete his electrical engineering degree. Then, he’s ready to launch his second business – really launch it. “I heard a good quote yesterday,” explains Elijah. “‘Be careful what we call impossible.’ My ultimate goal is to get into the space industry. Tesla and Halliburton are already working in this direction. I’d like to be on the forefront of that.” I’M LEARNING AND MYSELF HERE EVERY DAY ENJOYING STEM SCHOLARSHIP
VCF | GRATITUDE REPORT 2018/2019 13 Anna Heaton came to the United States from Russia at the tender age of five. When she entered kindergarten, she didn’t speak a single word of English. At home, things weren’t much easier for Anna. She describes her parents’ marriage as “toxic,” and eventually her father left Anna and her mother with just $10 to their names. Anna remembers this vividly. She also remembers thinking she never wanted anyone to ever have that kind of power over her and her life again. Motivated to pursue a higher education and strengthen her mind, body and soul, Anna joined the United States Navy at just 19 years old. “It was a great stepping stone for me,” remembers Anna. “I traveled the world, found a purpose and drive that I’d never had and met the love of my life.” Anna’s husband Cody was transferred to Naval Air Station Point Mugu – and Anna soon discovered Ventura College. In the fall of 2017, Anna decided to enroll and pursue her dream of becoming a surgeon. While studying in the library one day, she learned about the Ventura College Foundation’s scholarship program and decided to apply. “When I found out I was awarded the Associated Students of Ventura College Scholarship, the Luskin Phoenix Scholarship, and the McNeely Family Scholarship, it felt incredible,” remembers Anna. “It was a reminder of my purpose, that people care and want me to succeed.” Anna has immersed herself into the Ventura College community over the past few years. In addition to her work as a tutor, she founded the Females in STEM Club, volunteered as a mentor for the Amgen Biotech Program, and serves as a Ventura College Foundation Student Ambassador. As busy as she is, Anna maintains a 4.0 GPA and is on track to graduate in Spring 2020. After that, she hopes to transfer to UC Davis, which is highly regarded for its woman-focused STEM programs. She would like to continue her education until earning a M.D./PhD – then working as a surgeon. Anna says her scholarships through the Ventura College Foundation has made it all possible, which makes her FROM RUSSIA TO THE U.S. NAVY TO VENTURA ANNA HEATON work as a VC Foundation Student Ambassador even more rewarding. “Without the Foundation’s scholarships, I’d be in a mental state of distress,” says Anna. “They really allow me to focus on my studies and life as a student. If I didn’t have scholarships right now, I also don’t think I’d be able to afford going to medical school later on. I love spreading the word about the Foundation’s resources to my peers.” Anna is also deeply thankful for the donors who make the scholarships and programs of the Ventura College Foundation possible. “The opportunity that they give me to pursue my education just makes me want to work that much harder and reach all the goals I set for myself. My journey is going to be very long, so to have people be there for me like this really means everything to me.” VETERAN SCHOLARSHIP A REMINDER THAT PEOPLE CARE AND WANT ME TO SUCCEEDVETERAN SCHOLARSHIP
14 Vanessa Velazquez feels she owes a lot to Ventura College – as well as the Ventura College Foundation’s Weekend Marketplace. After graduating from Santa Paula High School, Vanessa began working as the Marketplace Assistant for the Ventura College Foundation’s Weekend Marketplace, which provides the people of Ventura with local crafts, produce and goods every weekend while also helping fund the Foundation’s overhead and student support programs – and therefore, students like Vanessa. While on the job, Vanessa received the boost in experience and confidence that comes with working closely with hundreds of vendors. She also learned about the many helpful programs and grants offered by the Foundation, thanks to her supervisor, Esmeralda Juarez. Thanks to the Ventura College Promise and Dr. Joyce Mason Evans Annual Scholarship, Vanessa was able to become a first-generation college student, making her Manzanillo, Mexico-born, middle-school educated parents Temo and Maria extremely proud – and setting the stage for her to give back to her own California community as an educator. FOREVER GRATEFUL TO THE VENTURA COLLEGE MARKETPLACE VANESSA VELAZQUEZ “My parents have been my biggest supporters,” says Vanessa. “They’ve been there for me through smiles and tears. Every time I fall back, they’re always there to hold me back up so I can stand on my own two feet.” Now 20 years old, Vanessa has done a fantastic job of that on her own, earning her associate degree in sociology while graduating with honors from Ventura College. She’s currently a junior at Channel Islands University and extremely excited about her ultimate life goal of teaching high school in the community she proudly calls home. That fire was lit in full during a Ventura College class taught by Professor Lauri Moore. “I was enrolled in other classes, but nothing made my heart happier than being in a classroom and seeing Professor Lauri Moore talk about sociology,” recalls Vanessa. “When I enrolled and finished my first sociology class, I began to unwrap something that was folded in my heart, and it was helping and teaching others. Now I’m following my dream of becoming a high school teacher. I want to be able to be that teacher who changes a student’s life.” While earning her sociology degree, Vanessa also took advantage of the Foundation’s David P. Bianco Textbook Lending Library, which allows students to check out up to three textbooks a semester for free, and the Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) program. She credits the EOPS program and her counselor, Kenya Ramirez, for helping her achieve her degree and transfer in two years. “She guided me towards the correct path and made sure I was receiving all the help I could get,” explains Vanessa. “Attending Ventura College was definitely, with 100-percent honesty, the best decision I have ever made in my life.” Vanessa also realizes the immense and life-changing value provided by the Ventura College Foundation donors. “I have benefitted from the support of the donors from the Foundation in every aspect of my life,” says Vanessa. “They have made a huge contribution in keeping my place in the education system and achieving my goals. My mom told me to always be thankful and give thanks to anyone that helps me. I extended my hand for help and the Foundation was there for me. Thanks to them, I will push forward in achieving my dreams because of their saying, ‘Your dreams. Our mission.’ I love Ventura College!” MARKETPLACE PROFILE

16 HELEN YUNKER GEORGE TILLQUIST LEGACY GIVING PROFILES Helen Mathilda Yunker arrived in 1948 in California, from Chicago, where she was born in 1921. After 10-years in direct sales, Helen fulfilled her dream of living at the seashore when she moved to Ventura’s Pierpont Bay area in 1958. As a retired realtor in 1971, she founded Helen Yunker Realty. Her 60 years in Ventura were of ongoing community engagement. She has been recognized over the years for her many contributions, by numerous service organizations in the areas of education, medical, civic, youth, theater, and arts. Helen’s recognition and contributions over the years are too many to list. Helen joined the Ventura College Foundation Board of Directors in 2000. Last May, the Foundation Board of Directors honored her service and leadership by naming her as a Board Emeritus Member. Helen awarded multiple scholarships over the years and created one endowed scholarship, the Helen Yunker Music Scholarship that will continue to impact Ventura College students in perpetuity. George E. Tillquist was born and raised in Illinois. He received his BS in Chemical Engineering from Northwestern University and is a graduate of the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. George retired from Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO, now BP) after 35 years. George and his wife Eleanor moved to Ventura in 1986 and immediately became involved in 31-plus years of civic and community service. Known for their generosity of both time and financial support, George was known to be a quiet force for good in our county. George’s volunteer civic activities ranged from serving as Chair of the Library Advisory Commission, on the Community Partnerships: Grants Evaluation Team and on the Seize the Future Citizens Outreach Committee for the City of San Buenaventura. In addition, he served on the First 5 Children and Families First Commission of Ventura County Administration and Finance Committee. Upon her passing, the Foundation received a $2 million donation from the Helen Yunker estate. Honoring Helen’s request, the donation will establish endowments for the Ventura College Music Department and the Opera and Musical Theatre program. The gift will be split evenly between the two. Helen took a special interest in the Ventura College Opera Workshop for many years and was known to do a little singing and dancing of her own. The Ventura County Ballet, accompanied by the Ventura College Symphony Orchestra, paid tribute to Helen at The Nutcracker performances held in December at Ventura College in the Helen Yunker Auditorium. For eight years and well into her 90s, Yunker had a cameo role as the maid at the beginning of the yearly production. Helen’s generosity will enable students who share her passion for music and theatre to express themselves and thrive in a creative setting. Helen’s legacy will live on in our art, heritage, and culture at Ventura College and in the community. George joined the Ventura College Foundation Board of Directors in 2004 and was instrumental in the creation and implementation of programs and numerous resources for students during his 14 years of board service. George was made a Board Member Emeritus in 2018. George and Eleanor’s dedication to the mission of the VC Foundation has made a tremendous impact on the lives of students at Ventura College over the years. In addition to their service, the Tillquist’s have awarded multiple scholarships and created two endowed scholarships (one was a birthday gift to Eleanor) that will continue to impact Ventura College students into perpetuity. It has been said of George, “His reliability, consistency, integrity, and generous nature make George one of Ventura County’s greatest, albeit unsung, heroes... always with a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face.”

18 TJ Foreman found tremendous success at Ventura College. Both on the baseball diamond and inside the classroom. You might even say he was Golden. “At Ventura College, I really learned how to manage my time,” says the 20-year-old Camarillo native. “To stay on top of work and make sure I didn’t fall behind on anything. I had great teachers and a great support system and was able to develop some really good relationships there.” TJ excelled in baseball at Moorpark High, but the gritty outfielder graduated weighing only around 145 pounds. Now six feet tall and a chiseled 175 pounds, TJ has truly come into his own. He hit a blistering .380 with 29 RBI, 44 runs and 30 stolen bases in 43 games during the 2019 baseball season, helping propel the Western State Conference-champion Pirates to a 26-17 record, including 13-7 in conference play. TJ led the Pirates in batting average thanks to his team-high 70 hits, and his 30 stolen bases not only led the team, but set a single-season school record. TJ was equally outstanding in the field, notching a perfect fielding percentage and earning a Gold Glove Award for his stellar centerfield play. In the classroom, TJ was equally impressive, sliding safely onto the Dean’s List thanks to a perfect 4.0 GPA as a General Studies major. TJ’s performance in the classroom also helped his team earn an overall GPA of 3.24 and an Baseball Coaches Association Team Academic Excellence Award for the second straight season. One of three athletes to record a 4.0, TJ’s overall accomplishments also earned him the distinguished honor of being named Ventura College 2019 Male Scholar Athlete of the Year. “That was pretty cool,” says TJ. “I was very fortunate and honored to be a part of that.” TJ also felt grateful to be part of what he calls a “really diverse” team during his two-year stint as a scholar-athlete at Ventura College. “Baseball at Ventura College turned out to be the best experience I ever had, meeting a bunch of guys from all across the United States,” explains TJ. “We had guys from Arizona, the east coast, even Australia. We finished as one of the better teams to ever come through Ventura College. To be able to take all of that in, I’m very grateful for the opportunity.” THE SCHOLAR ATHLETE WITH THE GOLDEN GLOVE (VENTURA COLLEGE 2019 MALE SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR) TJ FOREMAN After earning his general studies degree, he moved on to Austin Peay State University, where he is majoring in leadership and organizational administration and competing in Division I baseball. TJ’s heart still resides in the Ventura area and he hopes to return home to pursue a career in academic leadership once his baseball career comes to a close. He hasn’t ruled out pursuing professional ball, but he’s wisely planning for a life that extends well beyond the diamond. “I’d love to play pro baseball,” says TJ. “I’m doing everything in my power to make it happen. But I want to come back and get a Master’s – I’m on the fence between becoming a school teacher or a school administrator.” One thing’s for sure: TJ is forever grateful for his time at Ventura College. And he certainly left his own mark on the school, too. You might call it a win-win. ATHLETICS PROFILES ATHLETICS PROFILE
VCF | GRATITUDE REPORT 2018/2019 19 Audrey Castillo is on quite a run. The 19-year-old Oxnard native turned in a sensational sophomore soccer season at Ventura College, leading the Pirates to a 10-7-5 record – including the program’s landmark 350th victory – and a berth in the CCCAA (California Community College Athletic Association) Southern California Regional Playoffs. A versatile and talented midfielder and forward, Audrey led both her team and the entire Western State Conference (WSC) with 35 points in conference play, scoring 13 goals and notching nine assists as the Pirates went 8-1-1 in 10 WSC games. Audrey’s standout scoring and strong overall play earned her WSC North Division Co-Player of the Year honors from the conference coaches. After finishing with 55 points on 22 goals and 11 assists in 22 total games, Audrey became just the 11th player in the VC Pirates Soccer Team’s 23-year history to earn the top WSC North Division individual accolade. “That was the best soccer season of my whole soccer career because I put in the work every single day and didn’t put any limits on myself,” explains Audrey. Audrey’s strong showing at Ventura College also served to propel her to the next level in her budding career. After graduating with an associate’s degree in the Arts, the former Pacifica High star signed a national letter of intent to continue her athletic and academic pursuits at Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Washington. The Eagles compete in the Big Sky conference in (National Collegiate Athletic Association) NCAA Division I. Audrey’s powerful performance played the primary role in reaching the next level in her career and life. But to hear her tell it, a crucial assist goes to coach Steve Hoffman. “I remember in the beginning of my sophomore season, I was unsure about my future in soccer,” recalls Audrey. “But Coach Hoffman had told me that if I keep working hard that I would make it to a Division I program. That really flipped a switch in my head to accomplish this goal.” Goals certainly have become familiar to Audrey. She leaves Ventura College and flies off to join the Eagles having netted 30 goals and tallied 14 assists for 74 career points WSC NORTH DIVISION CO-PLAYER OF THE YEAR KICKS HER WAY NORTH AUDREY CASTILLO in just 44 games as a Pirate. She models her game and attitude on confident and prolific U.S. Women’s National Team star Alex Morgan and plays with an edge that belies her 5-foot-3 stature. Twice a first-team All-WSC selection, Audrey has the attitude, skill set and experience needed to transfer her success to Division I competition. “I think my best asset is that I love to take players on and go to goal,” says Audrey. “I’m aware I’m not the biggest player on the field, but that doesn’t stop me from playing aggressively. That goal-driven mentality is really what gave me an edge at Ventura College.” Audrey doesn’t hesitate to explain that the foundation for her success was laid at Ventura College. She received assistance to fund her education via the Ventura College Promise and the California College Promise Grant. On the field, her coaches and teammates inspired and pushed her to perform to the best of her abilities. “As far as my journey at Ventura College, I wouldn’t change a minute of it,” says Audrey. “I think what really made me play to my full potential is that my teammates and coaches genuinely believed in me. I’m so grateful to have received a great college education without having to pay for two years.” ATHLETICS PROFILE
