SPECIAL WELCOME MESSAGE

As Executive Director of the Ventura College Foundation,
it gives me great pleasure to share that the Foundation
awarded 400 scholarships to Ventura College Students
amounting to $652,758.40 in support in 2020-2021.
We are proud to walk alongside these students as they
overcome tremendous barriers to their education
including food insecurity, housing insecurity, financial
need, working multiple jobs, a virtual learning
environment, and a whole host of pandemic challenges.
The Foundation's goal each year is to provide impactful
support to students so it might be possible to eliminate
one ten-hour a week part-time job, spend more time
focused on their studies and successfully accomplish their
academic pursuits.
None of this would be possible without our remarkable
donors! Your generosity and support allows Ventura
College students to break through their barriers to
achieve their academic dreams. It is such a privilege to
partner with our visionary and big-hearted donors who
believe in the power of education to give economic resilience to every member of our community.

With gratitude,

ANNE PAUL KING
Executive Director

In Memory of Aurora Loss (1918-2020)

Aurora Loss was born on January 22,
1918 and grew up on a farm in a mining
town in Montana. She was a woman
ahead of her time. She was an
independent, savvy, career-driven
woman.

Aurora began her professional
journey as a chambermaid and later a
waitress at the Grand Canyon Hotel in
Yellowstone Park. After years of
waitressing, she attended Billings
Business College which launched her
into a successful career in the
engineering industry and as a
government administrator that took her
many places including the Pentagon in
Washington D.C. during WWII.

While in Washington D.C., Aurora became ill and needed to be hospitalized. It was an era where women
had difficulty advocating for themselves. When the doctors brushed away her symptoms, she was shown
support and kindness by a nurse. She believed the nurse’s efforts on her behalf helped save her life.

Aurora eventually relocated to California to be closer to family. Aurora found an opportunity to return
the long-ago kindness she had received by supporting Ventura College nursing students with
scholarships and program support. In doing so, Aurora helped the future by honoring the past.

The benefit of her generosity extends to the community as her giving ensures there is a workforce of
qualified nurses. It is projected that there will be a nursing shortage through 2030 since so many nurses
are expected to retire in the coming years, as well as the aging population and the changing face of
healthcare. Ventura College is working to fill the nursing gap as it graduates an increasing number of
high-quality nurses who enjoy a 100% pass rate and success on the National Council Licensure
Examination (NCLEX).

Aurora passed peacefully on April 5, 2020 at 102 years of age. Aurora’s
legacy lives on through her generous bequest of nearly $200,000 to
both establish an endowed scholarship fund for nursing students and
to enable the VC Nursing Department to purchase medical training
equipment. Her generosity of spirit will ensure that generations ahead
will receive quality care and caring from Ventura College’s nursing
program graduates.

In Memory of Stan Weisel (1927-2020)

Stan Weisel passed into a new plane of existence on
Wednesday, January 29, 2020. He was a scholar,
humanitarian, philanthropist, and self-made man. Stan was
born on April 4, 1927 in Rochester, New York, and he
moved to Los Angeles in 1928. He graduated from Fairfax
High School in 1945 and was drafted into the army a few
months later. When the war ended, he attended UCLA and
put his sight on teaching.

Stan taught Jr. High School math and sciences, and when
the opportunity arose, he taught math at East L.A. College.
He moved to Ventura County in 1982 when he retired from
teaching, and has called the City of Ventura home for the
past 35 years. He was a walker and a talker, golf and tennis
player, duplicate bridge teacher, and lover of music and
dance. Most of all, his inquiring and curious mind propelled
his exploration for knowledge and wisdom.

His motto was to “pay it forward” and he did so by helping those in need. His gift to Ventura
College for the Phoenix program is notable and every year scholarships are given to women
returning to school whose lives were interrupted by “life”. The library at Ventura College (LRC) is
dedicated to him and his gift there continues to generate scholarships every year. In 2015 Stan
spoke to a gathering of students and donors:

“I want people to know how important, how satisfying, how joy-filled it is to give, to really help
others. Most people would love to make other people happy…education is the great equalizer. It
gives everyone a chance, no matter their story or background. I have a message to give to the
Phoenix Scholars in this room tonight. A Phoenix Scholarship is a push to help give you the
education in the area that’s best for you to better your life and the lives of
others around you. This scholarship gift is given to you so that eventually you
can give your treasure away to help others like you. And you will take my place
and the place of other donors in this room to make the world a better place, one
life at a time. Thank you for the opportunity to experience the joy of giving and
helping others.”

Stan continues to live through his love and generosity that forever linger in our
hearts and minds. We are each better for having known him, and we will miss his
quick wit and joyful good humor.

In Memory of Elaine James (1946-2019)

On December 28, 1946, a miracle baby was blessed to the
union of Clifton and Lillian Marie McNeil. They named her
Elaine. Little Elaine McNeil was the sixth of nine children. She
was raised in Mobile, Alabama, in Ebenezer A.M.E.Z. Church,
where her parents were dutiful and dedicated members.
Elaine would go on to become a dedicated servant of her
Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In the latter season of her life,
Elaine relocated to Oxnard, California, where she would
reside until her return to glory, on August 22, 2019.

Elaine was someone that did not seek publicity nor the
limelight unless it helped a cause that would benefit others.
She was in the Frontline documentary, “Snitch” that focused
on an effort to free Clarence Aron, a young, Black man in her
hometown who had been sentenced to life in prison without
parole for involvement in a drug conspiracy. Aron’s
involvement was minimal, yet he refused to “snitch” on other
offenders and was therefore imprisoned. Elaine made many
trips to Washington D.C. and was part of a groundswell of
people working to free him. Ultimately, he received a pardon from President Obama and was released
after two decades of imprisonment.

Elaine was also involved in the short 2004 documentary, “Mighty Times: The Children’s March”, about
the Birmingham, Alabama civil rights marches in the 1960’s. It focused on the bravery of young activists
in the Children’s Crusade. The film makers made use of her “distinctive Southern voice”, which earned
her name in the credits. It received an Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject).

Elaine’s most prolific work and passion was in ministry and spanned more than 40 plus years. She
traveled all over the United States ministering and preaching the gospel. After serving in the capacity of
evangelist for many years, Ralph and Elaine co-founded Overcomers Community Outreach Ministries
(Heritage Square Hall Chapel, 731 A St, Oxnard, CA 93030), where they co-pastored and led a thriving
congregation, as a family. Those that are left to cherish her memory, will miss her infectious sense of
humor, bold convictions, wise advice, uncompromising love, and no-nonsense delivery of the Word of
God.

Elaine is survived by her husband, Ralph James. Elaine and Ralph have a history of
generosity with the Ventura College Foundation. They established scholarships in
honor of their mothers, Marie McNeil Memorial Scholarship (Elaine) and Maude A.
Broughton Memorial Scholarship endowment (Ralph). Ralph served on the Ventura
College Foundation Board of Directors and is retired from his career at Ventura College
as a beloved educational counsellor.

In Memory of Donald G. Gloisten Sr. (1928-2019)

Donald Gerard Gloisten Sr., beloved father, husband, brother,
grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, passed away June
10, 2019 of natural causes at home at the age of 91.

Don was born in NY and lived in a Coldwater flat above the
family deli in Brooklyn, NY. He attended Bishop Loughlin High
School, Seton Hall University, NJ., Saint Francis College,
Brooklyn, NY. and completed degrees in Bachelor of Arts,
Finance and eventually his JD.

After serving in the Army he hitch-hiked (Don had an
adventurous side) to Mexico City where he used the GI bill to
study for a few years. While in Mexico he climbed a number
of the Mexican peaks including Popocatepetl.

He started his Financial career as a runner on the floor of the

NYSE. After completing his law degree at night, he became

House Counsel and worked directly with Jack Dreyfus (a

financial giant) of the Dreyfus Fund, NY. Firms he worked with

are Wedbush Noble Cooke (now Wedbush), Bateman Eichler,

Hill, Richards, AM Kidder and Co, Glore Forgan Staats and the

NY Stock Exchange. Growing tired of working for others, Don Pictured: VC Foundation Board Chair Rob van

formed GBS Financial Corp in 1985, a full-service broker Nieuwburg presenting the Mary J. Gloisten Nursing

dealer and NASD member. Don won many awards for Scholarship to previous recipient, Jean Adame.

financial achievement including the prestigious Stock Broker

Hall of Fame in 1996. He also ran for Ventura City Counsel and was heavily involved in community

projects, politics and philanthropy. Over his lifetime he met many US presidents, senators and

dignitaries including Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole, and Newt Gingrich.

Don and his wife Mary enjoyed travelling the world. Don had a voracious passion for knowledge. He was
a student of life and a teacher to many in his over 20 years of teaching at UCLA. He was a published
author of many articles on finance and investments including his monthly Gloisten Investment Letter. He
was an accomplished photographer, pianist, painter, fisherman, philanthropist, father, storyteller, and
financier. One of Don's most recent passions was to help the younger generation understand the
dangers and allure of drugs. He coined the phrase, "Say Nope to Dope, Say Cool to School" and
introduced a musical/poetry contest to the local schools encouraging young children to express and
better understand the losses associated with drug and alcohol addiction.

He was beloved by all and special in so many ways. He touched many people's lives.

Don and Mary established the endowed Mary J. Gloisten Nursing Scholarship to
support Ventura College Nursing Students in perpetuity.
