Bromley Healthcare staff magazine - Christmas 2022

Despite everything, we saw from our awards in November you have many achievements to
celebrate. This demonstrates how the community services that Bromley Healthcare provides
is a key solution to many of the challenges that are currently faced by the health and care
system. I see this time and again from our well established clinical and support services that
are the bed rock of our organisation to the newer innovations developed with our partners.
Over the last year, we have launched (or are about to launch!) a number of new services
which include: the Urgent Falls Pick Up service, Case Management (expanding the ICN
pathway for patients who require a higher level of support) and the Hospital @ home service
(virtual ward) in partnership with One Bromley partners. The Tissue Viability service has
been selected as the London Test and Evaluation Site for the new national Transforming
Wound Care programme; this is testament to the team’s wider reputation gained from their
impressive outcomes and expertise. New career pathways have been implemented within
Community Nursing and the Children’s Public Health services to provide more development
opportunities. Plans are in place to ensure that career pathways are developed for all
professional areas including our non-clinical support teams.
Our estates review and upgrade programme has commenced with the Willows and Biggin
Hill in the process of being refurbished. Many of our other sites appear ‘tired’ and we are
looking at how these can be improved. The Special Care Dental team, opened their new
surgery at St Paul’s Cray, with additional funding secured by the team.
You have refreshed our values this year; Belonging, Health and Wellbeing, Continuous
Learning and Innovation with Compassion wrapped around everything we do – this certainly
feels a better description of what we want our organisation to be. I am very optimistic for
the future as the evolution of our new strategy has started. Our longer term vision will be
based on the many conversations underway across the organisation. We are an ambitious
multi-disciplinary and multi-geography organisation and I am excited to be working
alongside such fantastic colleagues to develop our strategy to reflect who we are and what is
important for us to focus on for the future.
What really makes my day is the lovely feedback that I see regarding the support and care
that you provide. So I was delighted, when a few days ago the following popped directly into
my inbox which is absolutely the epitome of compassionate care:

“I hope it’s okay to email you directly to feedback the exceptional care and attention, Linda
Ingarfill and Kim Dixon from the Home Pathway team, gave to my uncle when he came
home from hospital just over 3 weeks ago. I cannot put into words how truly wonderful
they both were to him. I know this by the way he engaged and responded to them. He was
so happy whenever they showed up for their time with him. This I know is down to the way
they treated him with the utmost respect and care on every visit. They have truly been our
life line and went over and above on every occasion. My uncle and I will miss them very
much.“
Many of you will be working over the holiday period, which I truly appreciate, as I know
this often comes with personal sacrifice in respect of your own celebrations. I do hope that
everyone is able to spend some time recuperating and relaxing with family and friends over
the festive period. Thank you again for all you are doing in the pursuit of providing and
supporting compassionate, high quality care.
Very best wishes for a Happy and Healthy 2023!

We supported Save the Children again this year with their annual Christmas Jumper
campaign on Thursday 8th December.
Christmas Jumper Day helps children all around the world receive the things that
they needs the most to help them. For some children its providing somewhere
for them to eat, learn, play and have fun with other kids at a shelter run by Save
the Children; for others, the money raised supports a child’s family provide the
important stuff as they had to flee their home due to the political crisis and unrest.
Well done to the SPA team who undertook their own fundraising project with a raffle
(prizes pictured below). The raffle raised over £250 for the charity.
We know that everyone wasn’t able to wear a Christmas jumper so whatever you
wore to participate: something festive, socks, hat, tie, earrings or tinsel, thank
you showing your support. We’ve included a few photos of you wearing your jolly
jumpers over the next few pages. If you haven’t donated already, you can still text

Equality and Inclusion

What does equality and inclusion mean to you?

In November 2022, our Equality and Inclusion Network organised a week of
events for colleagues to come together to reflect on this question, to debate,
discuss, share and learn.
The Conference was an opportunity to reflect on the progress we are making
at Bromley Healthcare and our journey as an organisation when it comes to
racial equality and inclusion, and to raise awareness and understanding of the
key challenges, and inspire and motivate colleagues to become allies and take
action.
The week started with a virtual launch session hosted by Tilly Majekodunmi,
Chair of the Equality and Inclusion Network, Jacqui Scott, CEO and Michael Nutt,
Bromley Healthcare’s Chair. During the session, Tilly asked Jacqui and Michael
some big questions around how Bromley Healthcare is tackling inequalities,
fostering a culture of belonging and creating a foundation of equity at Bromley
Healthcare. This was an incredibly insightful session – as one attendee said:
“[it was great to] have a chance to hear from Jacqui and Michael themselves,
leading by example and opening up the ongoing conversation and discussion.
Tilly was an excellent host. Jacqui’s explanation of microaggressions as ‘small
acts of exclusion’ was interesting - I will be using that phrase myself to pass on
the knowledge.”
This was followed by a number of virtual interactive sessions by external
guests, including Nzinga Orgill, who led a session on innovative inclusion,
social justice and equality and how to challenge the narrative for people from
underrepresented groups, and Ruby Ubhi, who spoke about systemic racism.

22

Bromley Healthcare staff magazine - Christmas 2022

One attendee to Nzinga’s session commented:
“I appreciated Nzinga’s facilitation skills - using phrases such as ‘what I’m
hearing is...’ to increase understanding of attendee points of view. I also
enjoyed the discussion around the importance of using people’s preferred
names, and taking the time to learn pronunciations. “
The final event of the week was an in-person day of activities held at Beckenham
Beacon, which started with an opening speech from Non-executive Director
Subo Shanmuganathan, and featured talks from Charlie Beardsley, our Director
of People and Workforce, the Learning and Development team, and our external
guest speakers. There was also a tombola with some brilliant and delicious prizes

Some reflections on the conference

At Bromley Healthcare, we place an emphasis on having a sense of belonging
and treating people with compassion – these are of course two of our new
organisational values that were selected by colleagues. Within this, it is so
important to ask ourselves what equality and inclusion means – to us and to
those around us. When asked this question during the course of the conference,
attendees and speakers shared some of the key points: equality and inclusion is
about enabling equal access to opportunities, it’s about ensuring fair treatment,
providing safe spaces for people to speak up, valuing people for their unique and
authentic selves, about role-modelling behaviours, and treating people with respect.
The week was also a great opportunity to learn in terms of organising large-scale
events for all colleagues. Next year, we need to do more to give people time to
attend, to make sessions that are in-person more flexible, and to record sessions.
If you have any suggestions on how we can do better next time, please let us
know.
Subo finished her speech at the conference with one of her favourite quotes from
civil rights activist, Rosa Parks, and I’m going to follow suit on this:

23

Bromley Healthcare staff magazine - Christmas 2022
“Stand for something or you will fall for anything. Today’s mighty oak is
yesterday’s nut that held its ground.”

We are on our way to becoming the mighty oak that is Bromley Healthcare, and
we are on that journey together.

A huge thank you to the E&I Network, to Tilly Majekodunmi, Bindu Hardy,
Nicolette Lawrence, Adeola Gbadegesin and to Dan Jones and Ash Kyasima-
Migadde. Thank you also to Jacqui, Michael, Subo and Charlie.
One attendee left this feedback and I couldn’t say it better myself: “It’s so nice
to be part of an organisation that is invested in positive change, belonging and
wellbeing.”
If you want to join the Equality and Inclusion network, catch up on Jacqui,
Michael and Tilly’s session, or just find out more, check out the intranet page.

What you’re up to...

The Rise of the Covid Bride (& Groom)

A few of our colleages had originally planned their weddings for 2020 but werent
able to tie the knot due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We’re reallly happy to be able
to celebrate with them as they have married this year.

31

Bromley Healthcare staff magazine - Christmas 2022

Shelley Bonner, née McCoy (Finance)

My wedding was originally planned for 27th June 2020 - 2020 had such an
amazing ring to it! The date was set after Will and I got engaged in Feb 2018,
we chose a venue that at the time was fully booked for 2 years! The venue, The
Ravenswood in Sharpethorne, was specifically chosen as one of the very few places
that allowed horses on the grounds and at the time I had planned to take both
my horses. Covid-19 hit and everything was up in the air, and the wedding was
postponed - sadly I lost a horse, and my brother in 2020 - two major characters for
my wedding day. We struggled to find another date, so we chose to postpone for 2
years and the big day went ahead on 25th June 2022 - pretty much two years later!

The photo below left includes Sarah and Berni (SPA admin) as they were my witnesses
(my lifelong friends!) and below right, Sarah, Berni & Margaret - we are all school
friends and all extremely close and have all worked at Bromley Healthcare! Margaret
now lives in Stoke but was a District Nurse at Beckenham Beacon for some years.

32

Bromley Healthcare staff magazine - Christmas 2022

Sarah Beavis, née Cheney (SPA Admin)

My partner Martin and I got engaged on 20th October 2018, on our 20 year
anniversary! We started looking at venues straight away and after being let
down by our first venue, we found Woldingham Golf Club. We chose a date in
October 2020 and started planning. Covid-19 then struck at the beginning of
2020, but as we weren’t getting married until later on in the year we thought it
would all blow over and everything would still go ahead. How wrong we were!
We had no choice to postpone, so decided to rebook for the following October.
At the start/mid-2021 we were still facing Covid restrictions and isolations etc. so
made the choice to postpone again to October 14th 2022. We had waited long
enough, what difference did another year make!? And I hadn’t ever envisaged my
wedding guests wearing face masks! Our dream day finally went ahead two years
after our original date, but it was most definitely worth the wait.

Shelley Bonner, who works in our Finance team and Margaret (who also worked at
Bromley Healthcare before she moved away), were my witnesses and Berni, who
works in the SPA team did a reading for us during the ceremony (below, left).

Christ Church, Bromley, with a small service on July 11th 2020 but it was 18 months
before they could do the celebrations which they finally managed on Friday 15th
April 2022 at The Darenth. That’s two anniversaries! Rebekah and Lorraine were
joined by many Bromley Healthcare nursing colleagues for the celebrations and all
her flowers were done by one of the nurses, Natalie Toomer. (Thank you, Natalie!)

Every first weekend in December, Medway welcomes the Rochester Dickens Festival.
The event is hosted to recognise the life and works of the writer Charles Dickens who
was known to live in and frequent the Medway town.
It's a packed two-day event including a funfair, Christmas Market, tour around the
Cathedral, Museum, carol concert, Bavarian food court, and twice daily procession of
Dickensian characters - the latter one is by candlelight. They even have a fake snow
machine to give the festival that extra Christmassy feel!
In the past 24 years, Sharon has been to almost every one except during the pandemic
and plans to continue to do so for many more years to come!
