Your Choice Your Voice - Relationships and sex education for secondary schools

®

Improving the health and wellbeing of young
people through best-in-class, evidence-based
Relationship and Sex Education

delivered by

Our vision for all young people

We believe young people everywhere should be empowered to make informed
choices about their bodies, sex and relationships. Our goal is for all young people to
have equal access to effective evidence-based Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
that is up-to-date and relevant to their lives.

What is Your Choice Your Voice® and why is it unique?

® Your Choice Your Voice (YCYV) is a unique

programme that has been developed
through robust evidence-based research and
planning by Public Health and School Nursing
professionals. It has been designed for year
8 and year 9 secondary school pupils. The
programme is reviewed and endorsed on an
annual basis by school head teachers and the
Youth Council to ensure the content is relevant
and appropriate.

The aim of the YCYV programme is to increase year 8 and year 9 pupils’ (12-14 year
olds) knowledge and awareness of sex and relationship issues to help them develop
the skills necessary to assess risks and understand potential consequences. This
helps young people make informed choices.

Why is Relationships and Sex Education so crucial?

From September 2020, relationships and sex education will become statutory in all
secondary schools in England. Parents will not have the right to withdraw pupils from
relationships education.

Ofsted reported in May 2013 that learning in Personal, Social and Health Education
(PSHE) required improvement or was inadequate in 40% of schools surveyed, and that
RSE required improvement in almost half of the secondary schools.

“Children with higher levels of emotional, behavioural, social and school well-
being on average have higher levels of academic achievement and are more
engaged in school, both concurrently and in later years”

High quality RSE helps create safe school communities where pupils can thrive and
develop positive, healthy behaviour for life. A comprehensive RSE programme is
critical for safeguarding pupils’ health and wellbeing and their ability to achieve.

Ofsted found that in eight out of ten schools, outside speakers had made a valuable
contribution to teaching by bringing a wide range of expertise and life experiences to
the PSHE programme.
