Principal Appreciation Month

By: Brittani Webb & Abbey Stalnaker

High School, Coach Hunley

In honor of Principal Appreciation Month, we interviewed Principal Hunley to
see what he thinks it takes to be the best principal. Coach Hunley likes being a
leader by setting a good example and having the opportunity to give back to stu-
dents. If he were not a principal, he would like to become a doctor or a professional
bass fisherman. He believes that in order to be an amazing principal, you have to
have a passion for education and a desire to be in a leadership position. You have to
be able to set a good example to students and be strong and to do what is right. He
said, “You can’t choose favorites, you can’t choose sides. You have to do the right
thing at all times.” If you are wanting to become a principal, you first have to get
your bachelor’s degree and then a teaching certificate. Some classroom experience is needed, at least 7-10
years. You need to go back and get your masters degree, and finally take a test through the state of Texas to
get your Principal’s Certification. Principal Hunley received his bachelor’s of Science and Biology from ET-
BU, his Teaching Certification from LeTourneau University, and his master’s degree from Lamar University.
Graduating high school at West Rusk, his favorite class in high school was government and economics. His
favorite thing to do outside of school is to hang out with family and to go bass fishing. If he could have a su-
per power , he would like to have the ability to heal people or to fly. His favorite place to go on vacation
would be to a beach, or sitting outside next to his pool and barbecuing.

Junior High, Mr. Hurst

In honor of Principal Appreciation Month, we also interviewed
Principal Hurst. Mr. Hurst has been the Junior High School princi-
pal for three years now. He was the assistant principal at Athens for
two years and interned for five years while coaching. Mr. Hurst loves
being able to help everyone and having the privilege to engage with
the students. He believes as a principal, you should have a sense of
humor, have flexibility, and most importantly have a big heart! On his
path to becoming a principal, Mr. Hurst attended TJC and received
his associates degree, he then went on to get his bachelors at Texas
A&M Commerce, and later received his masters degree at Texas A&M Texarkana. Once he acquired all of
these degrees he then took a principal certification test. Mr. Hurst’s favorite subject in high school was al-
ways doing science labs in science class. If he was not a principal, he would like to be a salesman. If he
could have a superpower, he would like to have the ability to read minds.

Elementary, Mrs. Schminkey
By: Leonard Cabe and Joshua Pawlik

Mrs. Schminkey has been the Arp Elementary school principal for 2 years
and was an assistant principal for 4 years while working for Whitehouse
ISD. Mrs. Schminkey is a TJC and SFA graduate. Two of the things she love
most about her job are greeting the kids in the morning and helping the teachers
be the best at what they do. Some of her hobbies are boating and skiing and
spending time with her family. She has been married 18 years and has 3 chil-
dren. Mrs. Shminkey’s favorite holiday is Christmas and she listens to a variety
of music. Mrs. Shminkey’s goal for this year is to help any student she can to be
successful in any way possible.

See You at the Pole

By: Katelyn Wilmoth

On September 26, 2018 the High School, Jr.
High, and Elementary school campuses gathered
around the flags to listen to amazing, student lead
messages. See You at the Pole is a global day of
student prayer that teaches students to focus on God
in their every day activities and to always reflect
God in everything that they do. “But the fruit of the
spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, good-
ness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control;
against such things.”

The Great Reveal - Who is Humphrey?
By: Leonard Cabe

On Monday October 8th, Arp Elementary
revealed the answer the much anticipated
question “Who is Humphrey?” Humphrey is
a pet hamster who deals with the same prob-
lems as an elementary student. Humphrey is
composed of several series where the teach-
ers and kids will read and interact according
to the book. To bring Humphrey alive to the
students, the school has even adopted a pet
hamster that is housed in the schools library.
The whole school is excited to read about all
the adventures that lie ahead for Humphrey.

Don’t forget to read your chapters!
