A Message from Ms. Parker

Arp, America is a wonderful place to be, but even here, there are times when we feel anxious
or overly nervous about a situation. Everyone feels anxious at certain times, and that is
normal. Normal anxiety usually happens during a stressful or difficult situation, can often be
helpful or motivational, and it usually lessens or goes away when the stressor disappears.
When anxiety comes out of nowhere, is intense or disproportionate, or lasts weeks or months,
you should seek help from a professional. One coping skill that can help with anxiety is using 5
Senses Imagery. Your thoughts have the power to change how you feel. If you think of
something sad, it’s likely you’ll start to feel sad. The opposite is also true: When you think of
something positive and calming, you feel relaxed. This imagery technique harnesses this
power to reduce anxiety. To begin this activity, think of a place that you find comforting. It
could be a secluded beach, your bedroom, a quiet mountaintop, or even a loud concert. For 5
to 10 minutes, use all your senses to imagine this setting in great detail. Don’t just think
fleetingly about this place--really imagine it.

Use your sense of sight- What do you see around you? What do you notice in the distance?
Look all around to take in all your surroundings. Look for small details you would usually miss.
Use your sense of sound- What sounds can you hear? Are they soft or loud? Listen
closely to everything around you. Keep listening to see if you
notice any distant sounds.
Use your sense of taste- Are you eating or drinking
something enjoyable? What is the flavor like? How does it
taste? Savor all the tastes of the food or drink.
Use your sense of touch- What can you feel? What is the
temperature like? Think of how the air feels on your skin, and
how your clothes feel on your body. Soak in all these sensations.
Use your sense of smell- What scents are present? Are they
strong or faint? What does the air smell like? Take some time to
appreciate the scents.

Then slowly bring yourself back to the present and take some deep calming breaths. This
technique can be used any time you begin to feel overly anxious or just need a mental break.
Remember, the more you practice, the easier and more effective the skills will become. If you
need help with this technique or would like to explore other coping skills, please do not
hesitate to reach out. I am always happy to help!

Elementary Staff of the Month

Congrats to Mrs. Keecia Washington for receiving Elementary Staff of
the Month. Mrs. Washington has been in Arp her whole life. She
graduated from Arp High School and then went to Tyler Junior College,
where she received her certification in emergency technology. She
worked in this career for sixteen years until she decided she needed to
stay at home with her kids. Mrs. Washington has two sons who both
attend Arp, one is in eighth grade and the other is in tenth grade. Mrs.
Washington decided to start subbing about five years ago for Arp and that’s when she fell in love
with the environment and the kids. Her first substitute positon was with the PPC life skills
learning department and from then on she knew that’s what she wanted to be. She is currently
a special education aide at Arp Elementary. She has been there for three years now. Her favorite
part of her job is when a student who has been struggling on a topic, finally understands and the
“light bulb” goes off. Mrs. Washington's favorite TV show is the Golden Girls. Mrs. Washington’s
one piece of advice for students is, “Don’t ever feel like you’re unteachable because you don’t
understand.”
Congratulations Mrs. Washington!

Elementary Student of the Month

Congratulations to Carter Baez for receiving Elementary Student
of the Month. Carter has been attending Arp Elementary since
kindergarten and is currently in the 5th grade. When he grows up,
he plans on becoming a zoologist. Carter enjoys watching Jurassic
World and playing video games based off of Jurassic World. Carter
has one brother who is in first grade. Carter enjoys watching and
playing basketball. He has two fish, a dog, and a red tortoise. If he
could have one super power in the world he would want to be invisible, so no one could see
him coming. Carter’s favorite teacher is Mrs. Kain, because he loves learning about science.
Congratulations, Carter!
