Elementary GOES RED FOR DYSLEXIA AWARENESS MONTH! Karla Florence As we enter into Dyslexia Awareness Month this October, it is important that we shed light on why this month holds such a significance. Dyslexia affects about one in every five individuals, making it the most commonly diagnosed learning disability. Research shows that it derives from the area of the brain that processes written language. Dyslexia impacts not just reading, but also writing and spelling skills. I have the opportunity, as a CALT (Certified Academic Language Therapist), to empower those with dyslexia to reach their full potential. Building relationships with those students that are served in the dyslexia program, as well as their parents/guardians, is the key factor to their success. It is important to identify their strengths and use those to meet the needs of each individual student. Allowing students with dyslexia to take ownership of their learning through the goal setting process and celebrating their achievements increases their overall confidence. My passion for teaching dyslexia derives from seeing my students grow while also learning to become their own best advocate. BY: ABIGAIL SKIPPER

C A R E E R The top ten percent of the senior class of 2024 took a visit to UT Tyler. These students are guaranteed entry into UT Tyler due to their outstanding academic abilities. Our media team had the privilege of conversing with some extraordinary individuals. Among them was Fisher Arrington. In the course of our dialogue regarding his experience at UT Tyler, Arrington shared, “It was a lot of fun, it offered us a taste of college life and painted a promising picture of our future.” When quizzed about what kept him motivated to maintain his high academic ranking, he disclosed, “UT Tyler grants scholarships to the valedictorian and salutatorian. That’s a significant target many aspire to achieve.” We concluded our conversation by asking him what advice he would provide to aspiring top students. His response was practical, “Submit all work punctually, practice politeness and respect. Always strive to give your best, prepare adequately for tests, and show dedication in your efforts." He emphasized that any students having questions about college or related matters should seek counsel from Mrs. Allen, or ask any of their top-performing peers, who he believes would be more than willing to offer assistance. What typically causes the most anxiety for freshmen? After speaking with a number of freshman students, it's clear that their predominant source of anxiety stems from the significant amount of work and the importance of meeting deadlines. The impression is that grades matter significantly and balancing homework with extracurricular activities poses a considerable challenge. They would advise 8th graders to prioritize their work and not to get overly involved in friendship circles or cliques. However, there's no need to be too apprehensive – it's not a drastic shift from junior high, just a little more demanding. The source of joy permeating the school's atmosphere comes from the beloved teacher, Mrs. Arrington. Her decision to embark on an educational career was significantly inspired by her mother. Mrs. Arrington's constant wellspring of happiness is deeply rooted in her steadfast faith. Questions are surfacing about the potency of "senioritis". From diverging opinions of two senior students, one insists it is a legitimate issue, affirming that "senioritis" is 100% real. However, the other dismisses the curiosity, suggesting it's simply a result of an individual's mindset. A- Authentic R- Responsible P- Prepared
