President’s Address

W ell, the day of the 2016 Shropshire Senior Merit has finally arrived. I
would like to welcome everyone from guests, players, officials and all
the spectators who have come to witness what I hope is a great day of
bowls from some of Shropshire’s finest talent.

To be the President of Shropshire and representing my league is a great honour
especially for someone of my age. The Whitchurch League has gone from strength to
strength over the last few years and I must thank all of the County and Whitchurch officers for their
continued support. Shropshire Bowls is in a good state of health and we must keep making progress
in all areas of our sport.

My bowls journey started out at Hanmer in 1991 at the age of 17. I have enjoyed every aspect of
the game from my role as Captain of the Hanmer B team, to then getting my head turned by the
District Club in Whitchurch to where I moved to in early 2000’s playing with the likes of Martin Lloyd
was always going to help anyone’s game. Richie Goddard was also playing for the District when I
was captain of the A team we had some success but never managing to win the league but always
finishing in the top 6. Recently I moved to my local club Malpas Sports who were league winners in
2014, however this year we are unfortunately at the wrong end of the table after most of the other
teams have strengthened. Completing my referee’s exam in 2003 at a young age was an achievement
and I gained respect for the game and knowing the rules always helps!

This year being President as well as Competition Secretary for the County and
Whitchurch League takes a lot of my time up and I must thank my partner
Marie for putting up with the endless bowls chatter, there is a lot of it!

Today’s competition will herald an opportunity for some players to reach
the promised land of the All England championships this year which is

being held at Llay Miners Club , Wrexham on Saturday 30th July. This
venue was chosen by B.C.G.B.A President Peter Higham. Also
today’s lucky winner will qualify for the prestigious Champion of
Champions finals which takes place in Blackpool on September
24th.

Many of this year’s competitors are under 25 years of age which
shows the strength Shropshire has coming through the ranks and
who are trying to replace the old guard at the top of the game.
From last year’s champion Rob Roden who will try to defend his
title firstly against Simon Rhodes of St Georges, Shrewsbury’s Ash
Wellings who beat Callum Wraight to qualify also Whitchurch’s Chris
Stretch who is the winner of many local titles - but can he hack it
higher up?

Most importantly whoever wins today let’s make sure bowls is the
winner. I hope that the support from everyone around the green is of
a respectable standard that represents bowls in a good light.

Thanks also must go to all the members of Wem BC who have given
their time today to help with smooth running of a competition that many
players would just like to qualify for.

Phil Scott - S.C.G.B.A. President 2016

Rob Roden - A Year As Champ

R ob Roden can still remember last year’s winning bowl in the Flowfit Shropshire
Senior Merit Final against Peter Famer as if it was yesterday “As soon as I released
my bowl it I knew it couldn’t fail and the shouts from the crowd confirmed it, most
distinctly hearing Turkey’s and my Dad’s voice shouting this can’t fail. The feeling is
indescribable, winning something that so many top players in Shropshire haven’t achieved
is so self satisfying.”

It was this time last year that Rob Roden took his place at Allscott in the
last 32 of the Merit, but he was so close to not taking part. “The funny thing
was leading up to the Merit it was a difficult time for me and my family and
I was very close to dropping out.”

But Rob, or Shoes as he his more commonly known as, summoned
up the courage to take his place and use it as inspiration to win the biggest
prize in Shropshire bowls. “The recognition you receive from winning
the Shropshire merit is fantastic, attending the Mid-Shropshire league
presentation as their guest of honour, Champion of Champions and an
All England appearance has been a great experience for me, something
that strives me to reach the next level. For many weeks after, opposition
captains came over with their sides and congratulated me which was a really
nice touch and makes it hit home how big winning the merit is. To be on the
trophy with the best bowlers in Shropshire is something that no-one can take
away from me.”

It wasn’t a good start to the day for Rob, as “Sean Round went for
a roll up with me in the morning before the Merit and wiped the floor with
me on the Bowring old green so things weren’t looking good.”

He also had to face family in his first game, his uncle
Rich Lawson, runner up in 1985 and 2001. It didn’t
look promising at 17-8 down but he produced
a great comeback to get out 20. This led
him to play Callum Wraight, “arguably the
country’s best bowler” according to Rob, but
Rob never looked back in the game and won
16.
“My hardest game was in the Quarters against
Aaron, who had been exceptional all day, and is
now showing his class in the Premier League.
“To me it is no surprise that he has broke
through into the county set up. His attitude and
the way he goes about his business is second to
none for a lad his age.”
However he overcame this obstacle winning 17
and reaching the Semi Finals and a guaranteed place
in the All England Finals for the first time. He faced
Meole Brace’s Darren Wellings in the Semi Finals,
and won 18, to face one of “Shropshire’s most
decorated players in Peter Farmer.” But Rob didn’t
let that phase him, and won 18 to win the magnificent
Charles Beddard Trophy.

To have beaten 5 county players, and all only 16 and above, shows the quality and strength
of his triumph, and the win had a huge impact on him. “It has given me extra confidence
however it does paint a target on your back to be shot at, as everyone wants to play and
beat you. Some people would have seen Kiah Roberts and then me win the merit and think
if they can do it, so can I! It could give people an extra sense of belief, in some ways like
the magical story of Leicester City this season.”

But the highlight for Shoes was “winning back my Shropshire county shirt
on back on the back of my success. There is no better feeling representing
Shropshire on the biggest stage and to prove to people that Dennis Lewis
was right in selecting the youth.”

The lucky hat of previous winner Kiah Roberts
was perhaps one of the more lighthearted moments
of Rob’s day, “It was a red hot day and surprisingly
enough I am not known for my fashionable
appearance and me wearing anything
fashionable is funny in its self!”

Rob qualified to defend his
title this year, again doing it the hard way by
beating Dave Rhodes with 21-20 with last bowls in hand. He followed
this up by beating Monday night team mate Glyn Picknell 21-7 and will
be facing another dragon in the shape of Simon Rhodes.

Who says he can’t defend
it successfully? The first person to do it since Callum Wraight in 2012,
but Rob has his own tips for this year’s finals day. “The ones to watch
this year for me are Mike Beer, he’s been a class act for a while now
and Richard Lawson who for me is playing some of the best bowls in his
career. It says something about the quality of players we have around
now that I haven’t even mentioned Farmer & Moss, they will never be
far away either!”
But the other great
thing for Rob this
year is to “see four
Bowring players on finals day, Jamie
King, Stuart Clee, Turk and Myself. It
shows how far the club has come and
we are only getting better as time goes
on.”
So it was a day he will never
forget 12 months ago, and the 31
other players in the field, only 4 of
them being past winners, will be
hoping to write their own memories.

The Final

Let’s take a brief look over the statistics behind the competition’s 103 year history! Who
are the competition’s most successful players? Which clubs have produced more merit
winners than any other? Which venue is the most commonly
used for historical merit finals?

Merit Legends

We can see at a glance below that there are a few
individuals who have forever inscribed their names
into Merit folklore through their collective dominance of
the competition. Four players in particular – Dick Meyrick,
Tony Poole, Peter Farmer and Anthony Dowley - have
collected a remarkable 38 final appearances between
them over the past 103 years, of which they have gone on
to win the trophy on 22 occasions.

Even amongst this esteemed group, Meyrick’s
achievements warrant special attention, sitting truly in a league of
their own. A record of 15 Merit Finals with 11 wins represents
an astounding achievement that will require something special to
even feel the hint of a threat – his record is well and truly safe for the
foreseeable future, at least.
Today will see Peter Farmer look to become the second most decorated
played in Merit history as he looks to make his 9th final and capture
the trophy for a 5th time (previous titles coming in 1993, 2005, 2006
and 2007).
That honour currently sits with Tony Poole – three of whose
final appearances were against Farmer and Meyrick, with him being
on the losing end of all three encounters. Meyrick and Dowley also
faced each other on three occasions also, with Dowley winning
those exchanges 2-1 (the two actually played one another 8 times
in total, with Meyrick only ever winning once). The only other person
today to be in the merit top 10 all-time list is Andy Moss (joint-5th), who
will be looking to build on his four final appearances to win the trophy
for a third time.

Dominant Clubs

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Castlefields take the crown for having more merit winners more than
any other club at 8 (with a total of 13 wins between them) – A Thomas, Jimmy Braddick,
Cyril Clift, Tony Poole, Tony Gibbons, Alan Mayhew, Callum Wraight and Richard Goddard all
taking the trophy back to the club – RW Owen, RS Thomas, Tony Dowley, Glyn Herbert and
Keith Wall all just dipped short of adding to this tally by losing in merit finals. Five of these
winners can be seen in the team photo below from 1981.

Joint first in terms of total wins comes in the form of the one-man army Dick Meyrick
whose individual achievements elevate Crescent / N.A.L.G.O to the second most successful
club, also at 13 successes (disclaimer: not entirely fair … WM Howells also took the trophy
there in 1952 and 1957). Ignoring the impact of individual brilliance and just looking at number
of distinct winners shows Castlefields still at the top of the pile.

Third prize goes to Old
Shrewsbury, who dominated the
first half of the 20th century with
8 champions and 7 runners up.
Cynical observers may point out
that of the first 34 merit finals, only
7 were held away from either Old
Shrewsbury or their neighbours
from over the hedge, Severnside!
Geographically, Shrewsbury have
shown clear dominance of the
competition - though St Georges,
Hadley, Chester Road, Wem USC
and SJB can all claim their fair
share of Merit success since its
1913 inception.

Meyrick - The Best Ever

N o discussion on the Shropshire County Merit is ever complete without its
most successful player – a man almost certainly the best to ever play the
game – Dick Meyrick.
Born during The Great War in 1915, Meyrick did not start bowling until the early 1930s
at St Julian’s on the banks of the River Severn. His genius was almost immediately
apparent as he captured his first major success by winning the county handicap at
the tender age of 19 in 1934.

However, it wasn’t for another ten years that he began his unparalleled
dominance of the Shropshire Merit, defeating Bill Gennoe in his opponent’s
fifth Merit Final appearance. This was only the second competition after
a three year break as a result of the outbreak of war in Europe. The next

quarter of a century saw Meyrick utterly dominate the competition
as he went on to win the tournament an incredible 11 times –
the likelihood of this ever being threatened (never mind beaten)
remains slim.
At National Level, he went on to win the All England 4
times and won the BCGBA Coronation Cup in 1947.
Meyrick’s record for Shropshire was equally incredible;
his first call-up came at age 18 and he went on to play 109
times for the county over a 43 year period, winning 76 of his
games at an eye-watering aggregate of +491. This included
winning 32 of his 48 away games at +184 – a highlight being a
21-2 win against J.Tideswell of Staffordshire in 1953.

His contemporaries speak of him in tones of admiration. A man of superb skill, ability
to bowl all conditions and marks, able to vary his delivery to confuse his opponents
- all combined with a perfect temperament and a wonderful character off the green.
So brilliant and unique were Meyrick’s achievements that it earned him recognition
away from the immediate bowls world; he was invited
by the Shrewsbury Mayor to star alongside Football
Legend Arthur Rowley and European 400m Gold
Medallist Robbie Brightwell at a Civic Reception in
1963.

Today’s 32 competitors will be determined to
etch their name onto a trophy alongside a man whose
name features on it 11 times - whose mastery of
the Shropshire Merit will forever ensure his name
is synonymous with the great competition –
“Mr Bowls”, Dick Meyrick.
