Dr Tamzeed Ahmed; Senior Consultant & Interventional Cardiologist participated in TCTAP ( Trans Catheter Therapeutics Asia
Paci c) Congress as a Faculty of the Year, held in Seoul, South Korea from 25th to 27th of April 2017. He was a panelist and presenter
of his own case “ Left Main Trifurcation stenting”. Dr Kazi Atiqur Rahman has kindly consented to cover his in-patients and emergen-
cies in his absence.

The International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders Asia Paci c
Chapter was held at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Goa India , from April 21-23, 2017. Under the
main themes of “Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery beyond the Continent” and “Growing Impact
of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery in Asia Paci c,” various scienti c programs were prepared
and participants discussed up-to-date knowledge, recent research results and technological
advances in the broad areas of bariatric and metabolic surgery. Congress brought practition-
ers, researchers and educators together from around the world who engaged in the eld of
bariatric and metabolic surgery. Title: IFSO-APC2017 (International Federation for the Surgery
of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders Asia Paci c Chapter Meeting).
Apollo Hospitals Dhaka organised a day long PALS and APLS
training in auditorium on 25th April jointly by the Department
of Paediatrics and our friends in PEDSI a voluntary organization
from New york. A total of 49 Doctors, Paramedics and RNs were
given hands on training. It was a wonderful program indeed.
Thanks to all participants including consultants and specially to
our overseas trainers Dr Maqsood, Dr Wasim, Dr David mac
Murray. Local team comprised of Prof Shahid Karim and Prof
Ishtiaque.
Dr. Alim A. Bhuiyan; Sr. Consultant Neurologist have participated in the “National Conference on Diagnosis of Genetic Disorders
in Bangladesh: present situation and future directions” on 15.04.2017 in Institute of Public Health Auditorium, Mohakhali,
Dhaka. He presented a paper on "Overview of Genetic Neurological Disorders " in the day-long conference. He have also acted as
Co-Chairman in the presentation session -1. It was encouraging and interesting to note that, in Bangladesh some Centers have
facilities for diagnosis of Genetic Diseases.

A.K.M. Mujibur Rahman is highly appreciable.
Clinical Cases
Dr. Prof. A.Q.M Reza has done a successful plain balloon angioplasty in dialysis catheter
induced SVC obstruction with swelling of right arm in a middle aged lady following
creation of AV stula in right arm. It was the rst case done in Apollo Hospitals Dhaka.
Patient was discharged with great smile experiencing more than 50% reduction of her arm
swelling within 2 days. She was referred by primary Surgeon Dr. S M G Kibria, if any
intervention is possible to restore venous return of upper limbs, A big thanks to him for his
great support.

for this procedure.
Under the consultancy of Dr. Tahera Nazrin, a baby boy named Baized got discharged at
stable condition after a successful PDA (Patent ductus arteriosus) device closure.
Thanks and great work done by the Pediatric Cardiology department.
Mr. Sha uddin Mohammad, age 42 years, got admitted on 04.04.17 in SICU with quadriparesis, unable to swallow and cough.
Radiological and biochemical marker shows aspiration pneumonia with type II respiratory failure and septic shock (S. procalciton-
in 60.9, Lactate 7.8). Clinically patient was tachycardic , tachypnic, hypotensive, febrile and hypoxic. With this feature patient under-
went emergency intubation and mechanical ventilator support with 100% Oxygen and ionotropic support. Through history,
clinical examination and relevant investigations patient was diagnosed as GBS with bulbar and autonomic involvement. On
05.04.17 Patient got asystole (due to Refractory Septic Shock), immediately CPR started as per ACLS protocol, CPR continued for 25
mins and Pt revive back to sinus tachy rhythm. After further resuscitation bed site Bronchoscopy was done for bronchial toileting.
With C/S guided very good coverage of antibiotics, IV IG therapy and with all supportive care pt was reverted from severe sepsis
and became afebrile clinically. This young star was successfully extubated at 1pm on 13.4.17. Pt was shifted to 6B on 15.4.17 with
GCS 15/15 without any neurological de cit. We are very much grateful to Dr. S K Das, DR. C P Dokwal, Dr. A Q M Reza, Dr. Ajay Abrol
for taking care of this patient.

A 10 years old girl was a diagnosed case of VSD with severe PAH. She was su ering from repeated respiratory
tract infection since birth. She had cardiac catheterization done outside of our hospital, Pulmonary arteriolar
resistance was calculated 10.4 woods unit which was reduced to 6.8 woods unit on 100% oxygen inhalation. Her
pulmonary artery pressure was found 80 mmHg on echocardiography. This high PASP and high vascular resist-
ance is a bad prognostic index for VSD closure. She was asked to go abroad for surgery. Then patient came to our
hospital, we counseled her and they agreed to undergo surgery. VSD closure with PTFE patch under CPB was
successfully done on 4th April, 2017. Post-operative Period in ICU and ward were uneventful. She was then discharged on 12th
April, 2017. This Surgery was performed by Dr. Sohail Ahmed, Consultant Cardio-Thoracic Surgery.

9 new departments have been added in the approved list of BCPS training. Now all together we have
reached to 23 departments. It is a great achievement for the Apollo Hospitals, Dhaka as we can now proudly
say that we are now achieving academic excellence as well. This will help to attract the great talent of doctors
to Apollo. Thanks to all the respective consultants of the departments and it shows the kind of work we are
doing in the department. Heartiest congratulations to all the new 9 departments who have got recognized
and special mention to Ortho and Hematology who got the approved recognized tenure of 1 year. This is
fabulous feat. My thanks goes to our academic committee chairman and members. Special mention to Dr.
Shahid Karim and Dr. Lutful Aziz who guided and helped us in navigating through this journey of getting the
approval. My background team of Dr. Farah, Dr. Selina, Asma deserves special mention who worked very
hard in very short period of time to get things organized and ready for the inspection. Dr Arif always was
there to give the support in terms of liaison. We need to continue this journey of achieving the excellence in
service and academic standards. Thanks to all once again in making this happen.

ANNIVERSARY
Pahela Boishakh represents the welcoming of another year in the Bangla Calendar and particular signi -
cance as it brings together not only Bangalis. Every year we celebrate Boishakh with traditional way. But
this year Apollo Hospitals Dhaka (AHD) has warmly celebrated its 12th Anniversary as well as Boishakhi
Festival together on 16th April 2017 through di erent exciting activities with all the employees in our own
hospital premises.
It was a day long program, started at 10:00 AM and ended at 6:30 PM with lots of activities and arrange-
ment by our Recreation, Cultural team and volunteers such as Cake cutting, long Service award ceremony,
art competition & cultural show.
Beginning of the program, Mr. Prof. Md Shahab Uddin Talukder (Chairman of Consultant Committee) has
delivered his opening speech. Later on, our COO, Mr. Ratnadeep Chaskar has delivered his inauguration
speech with passion by feeling proud everyone to be a part of this largest Healthcare organization in Bang-
ladesh.
Inauguration of the anniversary day started by cutting a huge & tasty Cake
by Senior Management, honorable Consultants of AHD, Senior Leaders of
STS Holdings Ltd. in front of the employees. We were really privileged to get
our one of the board members Mr. Chaklader Mansurul Alam and Mr. Parvez
Saiful Islam (CEO) STS group who have delivered very inspiring speech for
the betterment of AHD in the coming years.
The most inspirational part was the presence of our Sr. consultants, Consult-
ants, Seniors and they have enjoyed the program a lot with sharing their
positive feelings towards this arrangement. All of them specially Mr. Prof.
continued Md Shahab Uddin Talukder, Dr. Mrinal Kumar Sarker, Dr. Muhammad Lutful
Latif Chowdhury, Dr. Md. Muztaba Ali and others have appreciated this new initiative and suggested to
continue the sprit in upcoming future.
After Inauguration ceremony, Long Service Recognition Ceremony started to recognize 234 dedicated
employees who has made such a lasting di erence to our organization from last 10 or more years. Mr. Chak-
lader Mansurul Alam, Mr. Parvez Saiful Islam (CEO), Mr. Ratnadeep Chaskar (COO) AHD, Mr. Vinod Kalra –
Director Finance, Mr. Md. Enayet Ullah Khan-Business Development, Capt. Retd. Shubha Ravindranath-
Director Nursing, Md. Abdus Salam Bhuiyan – Director HR and other high o cials were present on stage and
distributed crests among the awardees with their good wishes.
A Children's Art Competition was arranged with active participation of 30 kids of our employees. The theme
was Pohela Boishak and we have distributed gifts to every kids.
The whole environment was fully surrounded by traditional foods (Fuchka, Jilapi, Batasa, Luchi, Shondesh)
Snake charming, Monkey dance, Local Folk music, dance, puppet show. To bring more traditional Boishakhi
Mela avor, our internal employees has put 14 di erent types of stalls with their home made pickles, sweets,
pitha, cosmetics and traditional cloths which also showcased our folk culture.
Finally, a fabulous cultural program was performed which was so delightful just because of the participation
of our beloved employees such as Consultants, Senior leaders, Divisional Heads as well as some of the
cultural resources internally groomed up by AHD Recreation committee.
We have spent a fantastic day together and it's became possible only for the active contribution, participa-
tion & dedication of our internal resources. All employees enjoyed the day with full enthusiasm. Once again
our employees showed that, they are the best resource of AHD and ultimately these human resources made

Tie-Up and Outreach
On 20/04/2017 Corporate Team organized a Health Session on “Basic Life Support & First
aid workshop” in IFC-WORLD BANK from 3.00pm to 5:00pm for their employees. The
session was carried out by Dr. Ashish Nandy (Academic Coordinator- Accident &
Emergency) . The total number of participants were 27.

May 21, 1991 - Former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in the midst of a re-election campaign, killed by a bomb

May 1st - African American Olympic athlete Archie Williams (1915-1993) was born in Oakland,
California.Williams, along with Jesse Owens, defeated German athletes at the 1936 Berlin Olym-
pics and helped debunk Adolf Hitler's theory of Aryan racial superiority. Williams won a gold
medal in the 400-meter race. After the Olympics, he went on to earn a mechanical engineering
degree from the University of California-Berkeley but faced discrimination and wound up
digging ditches. He later became an airplane pilot and trained Tuskegee Institute pilots includ-
ing the black air corp of World War II.

May 5th - Pioneering American journalist Nellie Bly (1867-1922) was born in Cochran's Mills, Pennsylvania. She is best known for her
1889-90 tour around the world in 72 days, beating by eight days the time of Phileas Fogg, fictional hero of Jules Verne's novel Around
the World in Eighty Days.
May 6th - Psychoanalysis founder Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) was born in Freiberg, Moravia. His theories became the foundation for
treating psychiatric disorders by psychoanalysis and offered some of the first workable cures for mental disorders.
May 12th - British nurse and public health activist Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) was born in Florence, Italy. She volunteered to aid
British troops in Turkey where she improved hospital sanitary conditions and greatly reduced the death rate for wounded and sick
soldiers. She received worldwide acclaim for her unselfish devotion to nursing, contributed to the development of modern nursing
procedures, and emphasized the dignity of nursing as a profession for women.
May 14th - German physicist Gabriel Fahrenheit (1686-1736) was born in Danzig, Germany. He introduced the use of mercury in
thermometers and greatly improved their accuracy. His name is now attached to one of the major temperature measurement scales.
