My name is Siti Nawwal binti Ahmad Nasfy, the third of six siblings, whose early education journeyed through the diverse landscapes of Penang, Shah Alam, Kuantan, Kota Bharu, and Taiping. This nomadic educational path laid the foundation for a life accustomed to adaptation and growth. Achieving 11A’s in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia opened the doors to Sunway College, where I pursued my GCE Cambridge A levels, setting the stage for my medical degree at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, under the auspices of a JPA scholarship. The clinical years at medical school were a revelation, deepening my fascination with Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G)—a specialty that perfectly married the medical and surgical realms. My commitment to this field was evident in my choice of subjects for my ethics paper and elective project, both dedicated to O&G. Returning to Malaysia in 2010, post-graduation, I embarked on my professional journey at Hospital Kajang, with O&G as my inaugural posting. The four months spent in O&G were both challenging and enlightening, affirming my passion for the specialty. This conviction only grew stronger with time, leading me to specialize further in O&G at Hospital Kajang and later at HSNZ. In 2016, my dedication took me to the University of Malaya, where I embarked on a Master in O&G programme. Balancing the rigors of study, work, and family life, including three young children and a long-distance relationship with my husband, was a Herculean task. Yet, the support from my lecturers, colleagues, and family propelled me to success, culminating in my graduation in 2020.
Despite achieving my dream of becoming an O&G specialist, I felt a yearning for something more—a piece of the puzzle was missing. Reflection revealed a latent passion for teaching, kindled by the many inspiring educators throughout my decade-long journey. Their optimism, motivation, and kindness not only enhanced my clinical knowledge and surgical skills but also instilled in me a belief in the power of knowledge sharing. This realization led me to the University Putra Malaysia (UPM), where I embraced the role of a medical lecturer. The past year has been filled with joy and excitement, offering me the privilege to guide and teach the next generation of doctors. My journey from a child with a dream to a specialist and lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology has been a testament to the power of perseverance, passion, and the unexpected paths life can take us on. It is a journey of continuous learning and sharing, driven by the desire not only to achieve personal goals but also to inspire and uplift others along the way.
EDUCATION HISTORY REFEREE PROFILE I am a dedicated and compassionate young Obstetrician and Gynaecologists with 11 years clinical experience. My Teaching PHILOSOPHY Medical education is not just a program for building knowledge and skills in its recipients, it is also an experience which creates attitude and expectations. [Abraham Flexner] In the realm of medical education, my teaching philosophy is anchored in the integration of robust foundational knowledge with practical, hands-on clinical experiences. This integration is essential for cultivating competent and skilled healthcare professionals. My approach to clinical teaching is to underscore the importance of fundamental theories and concepts, ensuring a solid base of knowledge. This foundation is then augmented with real-life case studies and simulations, providing a practical test of the students' understanding. I maintain that clinical exposure is indispensable, enabling students to encounter a wide spectrum of cases and appreciate the breadth of the field. Consequently, students are provided with clinical rotations across diverse areas of Obstetrics and Gynecology (O&G), including prenatal care, labor and delivery, and gynecological surgeries, to enhance their understanding and skills.
Recognizing the importance of developing clinical skills early in medical education, I advocate for active student participation in practical sessions. I encourage students to be proactive during clinical attachments, engaging in hands-on tasks such as conducting deliveries under supervision or assisting in obstetric and gynecological surgeries. This approach not only fosters their interest but also deepens their understanding. Communication skills are paramount for a doctor to thrive in the healthcare industry. Therefore, I emphasize the importance of student interaction with patients to refine their communication skills, bedside manner, and holistic understanding of patient care. This engagement boosts their confidence and fosters a positive rapport with patients. Beyond traditional clinical teaching methods, I incorporate studentcentered learning into my approach. Regular case presentations and casebased discussions serve as powerful tools for students to apply clinical knowledge, practice communication skills, deliberate on various management strategies, and reflect on their clinical experiences. These methodologies are instrumental in preparing students to become exemplary and competent doctors.
