Student Parents: Barriers to Progression Report
This report presents findings from a mixed methods study exploring the experiences of student parents in higher education and the factors shaping their progression. Drawing on survey and focus group data, the study identifies how caring responsibilities interact with institutional systems, affecting access, engagement, wellbeing and continuation. The report highlights structural barriers including childcare, finance, timetabling, administrative processes and belonging, while also recognising the strategies and strengths student parents bring to their studies. The findings provide an evidence base to support more inclusive institutional practice and inform policy and service development.
