Experience
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: ROLLING RIVER RAMPAGE
Sunday June 24-Thursday June 28
5:30 pm dinner, 6:00-8:00 pm program
Join us for an action-packed VBS adventure at Rolling River Rampage! You’re invited on
a white-water rafting adventure to experience the ride of a lifetime with God!
Dinner will be served at 5:30 in the Family Life Center. At 6:00, we will make our way to
the Sanctuary for a high-energy opening assembly. Afterwards, our Rafters go with their
groups to the Bible Story Station. Interactive Bible lessons reveal “Rapid Reminders” to
equip your Rafters for an active life with God.
Along the river, children discover that life with God is an adventure full of wonder and
surprise, and that they can trust God to be with them through anything. Relevant music,
exciting science, creative crafts, fun recreation, and memorable Bible stories will help kids
know that God is always with them as they ride the rapids of amazing grace!

COLLEGE & RECENT HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES * COME AND JOIN THE
SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS beginning June 3 from 9:45-10:45 am under the
picnic shelter. It will be great to embrace those we may not have seen in a while, and to
laugh and answer questions some may have about the college life.
We will talk about what it means, as a Christian, to live life with
integrity. You will receive Ronald Greer’s book, If Y ou Know
Who You Are, You Will Know What To Do. We will explor e how
that phrase has meaning in our lives. Everyone is invited. On the
last Sunday, July 29, we will have a brunch or, if you prefer, an
early lunch. Look forward to seeing you!

DR. MARGARET (MARGIE) R. MUIR
Margie graduated nursing school at Michigan State University in 1983 and decided to
try out North Carolina “for a year or two”. Her girlfriends convinced her to stop and
interview at Duke Hospital and she reportedly said, “I have never heard of Duke.”
Margie has since been employed full time for the
past 34 years as a Duke nurse in roles of staff nurse,
research nurse, clinical staff educator, nurse manager,
and currently, is in customer service as patient experi-
ence officer at Duke Regional Hospital.
Margie is married to Allen Muir, also from Michigan. a
Before having her children, Grant (25) and Marie (20)
both of whom are Carolina Tarheels, she obtained her
masters in nursing administration at Duke. The young-
est child of a large Catholic family of 10, she attended
a funeral service at Aldersgate 18 years ago and has
been an active Church member ever since.
Margie has been recognized in her nursing career by winning The Great 100 of North
Carolina, The Triangle Business Health-Care Heroes Award, Duke Presidents Award,
Office of Inclusion and Equity Award and Duke Friends of Nursing.
At age 55, as a lifelong learner and with both her children off to college, Margie
decided to return to school and obtain her doctorate in executive nurse leadership at
UNC-Greensboro. Her doctoral hooding ceremony was held May 3, 2018.
Margie enjoys her large yard off November Drive, but mostly her “barn” where the
Muir clan frequently hosts gatherings around the fire pit for friends, neighbors, and
family.

DRAMA MINISTRY IS SCOUTING FOR TALENT!
Some say that worship is a rehearsal for life, and that we are the actors and God is the
audience. Our faith is built on the story of God and God’s people, which means there are
definitely ways that we can learn and worship through drama. If you’d like to get involved
in our plans to provide some drama for worship, please contact Emily Wike at
[email protected].

SAFE SANCTUARY TRAINING
All volunteers with children and youth are required to attend a Safe
Sanctuary training and be current with a background check (within the
last 3 years). Please see below for the available training times. Our Safe
Sanctuary policy exists to ensure the safety of our children, youth,
vulnerable adults, and all volunteers who work with them.
As it states in our policy, “Aldersgate United Methodist Church
welcomes children and youth knowing that for some it may be the only
place where they will experience God’s unconditional love and grace.
Aldersgate UMC is committed to providing as safe and secure an
environment as possible for all children, youth, and those who
participate in the ministries and activities sponsored by our church.”
The Safe Sanctuary task force has recently met and asks all volunteers to attend one of the upcom-
ing trainings, even if you have attended in the past. This includes those helping with Vacation Bible
School or summer Sunday School. If you are currently serving or even if you plan to in the future,

YOUTH SUNDAY
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit! Acts 2:4
What a blessing it was to have our youth share their gifts through music, arts, testimony, interpreting
God’s word, and leading all aspects of worship on May 20th. As we celebrated the Holy Spirit filling
us up, it was truly a blessing to watch the Holy Spirit pour out through our youth as they lead. I want
to personally thank our youth, our music ministry, our pastors, our media team, and our office staff for
coming together to create such a wonderful day of worship. I am truly blessed to be here at Aldersgate
UMC and work with such an amazing group of young people. Thank you Bull City Youth for leading
us in worship. I look forward to many more Youth Sundays in the future.
Grace, peace, thanks, and love, Lydia

There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:
a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.
Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8
Congratulations to our 2018 graduates. Your Aldersgate UMC family will be
praying for you as you enter into your next steps. We pray for you to continue to
feel God’s presence in your life as you go and respond to the calling He has for
all of you!
On June 10th during the 11 AM service we will pray over our graduates and their
futures. Join us as we celebrate their accomplishment and surround them with
God’s love.

BREAKAWAY—JUNE 25-30
Summer Breakaway is a worship-ful
week of camp for middle school and
high school youth. The week includes
daily worship, small groups for spir-
itual development, building relation-
ships with new friends and old, ex-
pressing creativity in “living worship” groups, and developing a
deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. No matter where you are in
your faith, you are welcome to join us on the “Highway to
Holiness” for an unforgettable journey. To register, go to https://
nccumc.org/outh/events/register/ and notify Lydia Cauley at [email protected].
BULL CITY SUMMER
JOIN US FOR OUR SUMMER SHORT-TERM MISSION
During July 15-20, we will be in the NC Mountains for a week of mission
work. We have 8 spots left for youth and leaders to spend the week provid-
ing home repairs in the local Appalachian community. Through service we
will be the hands and feet of Christ, while building up relationships with
those in our group and the greater North Carolina community. For more
information or to sign up for any of these events, please contact Lydia
Cauley, Director of Youth and Outreach at [email protected].
ACS (ANNUAL CONFERENCE SESSIONS) JULY 23-29*
Being faithful is more than an annual checkup. Christians are called to go out into the world as
field doctors—healing people where they are. At Annual Conference Sessions (ACS), we explore
issues of the church, nation, and world: What plagues our society? Throughout the week, we
participate in small groups to build spiritual development and relationships, as well as exploring
topics of interest. During ACS, the Conference youth body elects officers and other leaders. Youth
are given a voice to debate and decide upon resolutions on contemporary issues facing the world
today. ALL churches are encouraged to send at least 1 delegate. Schedule your checkup today!
To register go to https://nccumc.org/youth/events/register/ and notify Lydia Cauley at
[email protected].

CONDUIT NEWS
A beautiful celebration of CONDUIT’S 30TH ANNIVERSARY was held on Saturday,
May 19th at Mt. Sylvan UMC. Coach Bryan Umstead, formerly of Mt. Level M.B. Church, was
the keynote speaker. While folks ate their lunch from a bountiful buffet, Lee King gave the 30-
year history with the help of several individuals from our 6 churches who had prepared to share
a particular program in which they had been in leadership. Then a few more participants spoke
meaningfully. The program ended with a proclamation from the Durham Board of County
Commissioners read by CONDUIT’s vice president, Barbara Cameron from Mt. Level
Church. It declared May 19th a day of celebration of CONDUIT’s 30th Anniversary in recogni-
tion of the positive impact of CONDUIT in our Northern Durham community. It is signed by
Wendy Jacobs, chair of the County Commissioners.
CONDUIT is holding 1 event per month for elementar y and middle high students at
Oxford Manor to keep up our presence and relationships in the community. We are planning for
the third Thursday of each month. The next one will be from 4:00 to 5:00 pm on Thursday, June
21st. We plan to center that program on the care of God’s creation and Earth Day. Please call
Lee King at 919-477-5245 for more information. If you would be interested in helping to plan
and/or carry out activities, let Lee King know.
LAKE JUNALUSKA FESTIVAL OF WISDOM AND GRACE
This year’s conference for senior citizens at Lake Junaluska will take place from Monday to
Thursday, August 13-16. The workshops are centered around the theme, “The Wise Shall
Shine.” Both of the hotels have been recently renovated. The package fees include all of the
meals, plus there is a program fee of $100 per person. CEU credit is available for the workshops
for $10 per person.

restaurants right there, and a representative of the museum will
show us around at 1:00. There is minimal walking and the park is
all pavement. Please contact Joyce Mackin at
[email protected] asap to reserve your seat on the bus.
On Thursday, June 21, Barbara and Jack Snyder will give a power-
