We Saw You - March 2014 - HANDS ON Tile Installation
by Jim Hojnacki, CCS (retired), Member Emeritus
I don’t think any of us who attended the March CSI meeting at the Daltile Showroom on Broadmoor
Avenue near 36th Street will become certified tile installers anytime soon. Our hosts for the evening were
CSI members Jennifer McCormick of Daltile and Craig Harmon of Mapei. We were all set up in teams of 3
people at each work table and, after a short (but thorough) presentation and discussion, we were allowed
to do our own tile installation and grouting procedures. The math worked out perfectly as we had 24
attendees and 8 work tables. Yours truly was slightly overdressed for the occasion but I managed to
keep my jacket and tie out of the grout bucket. I haven’t had this much fun since Sister Mary Notelma
showed us how to make Paper Mache masks in Sixth Grade. Overall, the majority of the group did a
decent job of making their sample panels look like a professional installation.
While the main focus of Craig Harmon’s presentation was directed towards the new LFT (large format
tile), we only had to work with the standard 6” x 6” size tile. The new LFT comes in sizes 24” x 24” and
24” x 48”, and these units are very heavy and difficult to handle. Because of the larger size, these units
are manufactured with a slight curvature that is barely perceptible to the human eye. Typical tile
installers must use caution when handling these larger sizes and they must also be careful to offset the
running bond by 1/3 of the tile size. If the tiles were set with the typical running bond of 1/2 tile size,
the curvature would cause the corners of the tile to sit below the center of the curved tile creating an
offset at the edge of the tile pieces that could cause unevenness and possible tripping. The 1/3 tile offset
allows the edges to be more evenly matched and to remain level. The LFT also should not be installed
according to typical TCA guidelines for using “thin set” (3/8-inch) mortar. The best mortar for these tiles
is “medium bed” (3/4-inch) mortar because it includes larger gradations of aggregate to support the
larger and heavier tile pieces. Craig and Jennifer showed us some newer “thin tile” panels (Daltile
SlimLite) that are merely about 1/8-inch in thickness and these thin panels come in sizes 39” x 39”
(100 cm x 100 cm) and 39” x 118” (100 cm x 300 cm). These larger size units are best handled by the
installers the same way that glass installers handle large sheets of glass using suction cups.
The type of mortar used for the LFT units is referred to as “thixotropic” because it is stickier and holds
together better on vertical walls and will not sag or fall off the wall like normal cement mortar will.
Caution must also be used to allow a longer curing time for the LFT tiles because, unlike standard porous
ceramic tiles, these tiles are generally porcelain or glass tiles and are much denser and will not allow the
moisture in the mortar to evaporate as quickly. With the denser tile, the only avenue of escape for the
moisture in the mortar is through the joint while standard ceramic tile will also allow the moisture to
escape through the thickness of unit itself.

WWW.CSI chapter 098.history
by Jim Hojnacki, CSI CCS (retired), Member Emeritus, Chapter Historian
This month’s WWW History Column (The Way We Were) is kind of similar to
last month’s History Column which went back from the years 2008 thru last year
and looked at all of the programs which were offered during the month of
February. The similarity ends at the point during my “research for February”
where I could not sift through all the piles of loose paper (CLUTTER) that are on
my side board and card table without something or someone falling on the floor.
Amongst the files (OVERLAPPING PILES) were 3 sheets of paper dating back to
the years 2002 and 2003. I knew in my heart that these 3 particular pieces of
paper would come in handy one of these decades.
Dateline: Thursday, February 7, 2002: Tour New Building and Navigate
the CSI Web Site – CSI offers a “2-for-1” meeting this month with a new
building tour and learn how to access and navigate the CSI Web Site. The design firm of Fishbeck
Thompson Carr & Huber is proud to present their new Grand Rapids Office facilities located at 1515
Arboretum Dr., SE, just off Cascade Rd., east of the Spaulding Ave. and Hall St. intersections
(adjacent to the Watermark Country Club). FTCH opened its new building complex in July of 2001 to
house the nearly 250 Grand Rapids employees which had been previously housed in five separate
buildings on Fulton St. in Ada just over a mile west of Amway. Look for the “big red roof” tucked
away in the grove of trees just west the golf course. Also, learn how to access and navigate the CSI
Institute Web Site. [Didn’t Gary Beimers just do this again in February?] Jim Hojnacki, CCS, Chapter
Secretary and Technical Chair, will show you how to get on line and look at your individual CSI
Member Profiles, change your profile data on line, or just look up all that information that CSI has
available for you. Look up CSI by-laws, CSI Technical Documents, or even search the address or
phone of your CSI buddies across the country with just a few key strokes and mouse clicks. Come
with questions and get the straight scoop about your organization. Look up other CSI chapters across
the country and read their newsletters on line. [For the record, this was also just 3 months before my
wife and I went to Alaska to see our son and we walked across the Arctic Circle on Memorial Day.]
Dateline: Thursday, February 13, 2003: Concrete Slabs, Moisture, and Adhered Flooring –
Chapter members, Pat Corderman, David Turner, John Arends, and Gary Johnson presented a panel
discussion on a subject most everybody wanted to shy away from. This is one of the most perplexing
issues in construction today [and still is]. In the panel scenario, all members of the construction team
have worked hard to meet the project deadline. The only remaining task is to install the floor, and the
concrete slab contains too much moisture. Months pass by as the slab dries, and hopes of an
“on-time” completion date fade to a distant memory. How did this happen? How dry does the slab
really have to be, and how long does it take to get the slab that dry? What can be done about it now?
How can this be prevented? The CSI Greater Grand Rapids Chapter is pleased to offer its members
and other industry professionals the opportunity to attend a panel discussion addressing this topic.
Each member of the construction team has a unique perspective and opportunity to impact this
problem. One person’s brilliant solution can be another’s nightmare. Therefore, we have assembled a
diverse panel, including the following panelists: Pat Corderman – Project Manager with Rockford
Construction; David Turner – Concrete Contractor from Kent Companies; John Arends – Home Acres
Building Supply Co., experienced as a flooring supplier and installer; Gary Johnson – Architect and
Specifications Writer for Tower Pinkster Titus Associates.
Dateline: Thursday, May 8, 2003: DeVos Place Tour – Tour the new Grand Rapids Convention
Center Site at the corner of Monroe Ave. and Michigan St. Meet for dinner at Rembrandts at
Bridgewater Place and a discussion and presentation about the project before walking across the river
on the Bridge St Bridge to tour the site [note – Michigan St. and Bridge St. change names at the
middle of the bridge]. Hosts for the presentation and tour are from Progressive AE and will include
John Van Houten, AIA, Project Architect, and Bill Culhane, RA, Construction Administrator.
Presentation will include a brief history of the project, a project overview, and descriptions of some of
the unique features of this structure. Hard hats and hard sole shoes are mandatory. Sorry, no tennis
shoes or high heels.

CSI Grand Rapids would enjoy helping you with your advertising needs. We can help you sell your services or products. We have
a number of different sponsorship advertising packages to give you and your firm, company, group, or organization the exposure
to the construction professionals you’re looking for.
Just a reminder,……..now you can pay to sponsor/advertise with a credit card directly on our web site!! With the convenience of PAY
-PAL, simply select the package you want, and pay for your advertising package on line with Visa, MasterCard, American Express,
or Discover. When you pay online for your package, don’t forget to fill out the appropriate sponsorship advertising package con-
