Camp Recount

A Camp Recount by Hugh

CAMP
ROTORUA

2016

By Hugh

“Yay” I yelled as we got to Keswick Christian
camp because the car trip to camp Rotorua was
about six to eight hours long and it got real
boring, real fast. I was excited when we finally
got to the campgrounds so one of the first things
I did was go and find my bunk room (number
30).
“Ahhh, I pick that one,” I said to myself glad to
not been the bus I was thinking as I put my
jumper and hat on the one I chose. A little while
later I was playing a game of go fish with Aiden
and Alex in my bunk room when the bus pulled
up right outside my bunk room window
“Yay the bus is here!” I yelled.
“Oh well let's go get our stuff,” Aidan said so
we packed up our card game and went to go get
our stuff from the double decker bus.

Then the next day after breakfast we went to our
bunk rooms to get ready for the day ahead. We

had to pack in our bags our water bottle, a
jumper and anything else we wanted or thought
was important to bring with us. When we got to
our first stop we were at the Agrodom to watch
the sheep show, we were given pink hat stickers
to identify the school and so we have access to
the sheep show and the gift shop. At the
beginning of the sheep show the man introduced
the different types of sheep and what they were
special for. My favourite parts of the agrodom
were Rock jumping on the massive pile of wool
and then the group of dogs walking on the sheep
as if they were a staircase or a podium.

Latter in the day, after the agrodome, we were at
the bottom of the gondola waiting for the next
one to take us up to the luge
“Ehhh I’m afraid of heights.” I said with terror
in my voice as I started breathing deeply trying
to calm myself down from my fear of heights.

When the gondal finally got to the bottom and I
was on we started going up we got to see most
of Rotorua and lake Rotorua from about
halfway up. Evently somebody saw some deer
so I said.
“Look it’s Bambi!” and so everyone was
looking at the deer pointing, chatting away and
laughing.

When Mr O had finished giving out the tickets
and we all went and dropped our stuff off with
some of the adults near the rubbish bin. Next we
went to go get a helmet size that fitted us so we
could go down the luge and have fun. The
person waiting for us at the entrance for the luge
clipped a circle that we had to push out off our
tickets and gave us a stamp on our hand and
then gave us a quick demonstration on how to
use the luge sled. The first time I went down the
luge I went down the scenic/beginner route and

then did the intermediate course after that. The
scenic course was really relaxing so I didn’t
worry at all, when I did the course and so I sort
of speed down the scenic course but I still took
the time to look at all of surrounding area and
pretty trees. On the intermediate course it wasn’t
much harder at all the main bits that caught me
by surprise were the wood planks slowing me
down and the split in the track making me
decide which way to go. In the end I picked the
right but I think I should have done the left path
because it sounded a lot steeper and more fun
than the right path thanks to a friend who told
me about all about the left hand side.

After all of that we all of that we came back to
the campgrounds but not before buying a packet
of jellybeans for the rest of the week. When we
got back to the campgrounds we all got some
time to relax and enjoy being at the

campgrounds before we all had to have dinner
and dessert the thing I chose to do was to play
go fish with some of my friends, we chose to
play the quadril version first which means you
have to get all four cards of the same number
then the pairs version afterwards.

A little while later we had dinner in the dining
room and dessert afterwards. For dinner we had
Nachos, mince and coleslaw so I chose to say
“How do you know which cheese is not yours?”
“Nacho cheese.” Said Liam unamused as he
went back to eating his nachos and mince. For
dessert we had cream cake and vanilla ice cream
and some of us just ate it while others just ate
slowly.

When dessert was over we got a few minutes
free time before supper. After what felt like
forever it was finally time for supper we all

went to the kitchenette to write in our camp
diaries and have some of the home backing
everyone brought.

A little while later we had to go to bed so we
would have enough energy for the long and
tiring day ahead. In my opinion Tuesday was
one of the best days we had because it was one
of the most exciting days, “definitely gonna be
better than the 3D maze.” I thought to myself.
