SHAPE

Form and shape can be thought of as either two dimensional or three dimensional

SPACE

• An object internal/external area
• Form and shape are areas or masses which define objects in space.
• Forms and shapes can be thought of as positive or negative. In a two dimensional

composition, the objects constitute the positive forms, while the background is the negative
space

VALUE

• An objects lightness or darkness
• As soon as you place an object on your blank canvas (whether for print or web) that element has

value.

COLOR

• An objects chromatic quality

• An example of colors would be purple or blue

• Because the gene sits on the X chromosome—and women have two X chromosomes and so
two copies of this gene, compared with only one for men—the gene aids women’s ability to
perceive the red-orange color spectrum.

TEXTURE

• The tactile quality of a surface
• An example of something texturized could be braille which is used for blind people to “see”

their way around the world
• A smooth or rocky surface
