The Giver:
River
I chose this symbol because
a symbol represents twists
and turns, the ability to
follow your own path. The
split between colorless and
color represents Jonas
moving away from society
and to a world of
difference.
Jonas’s Journey; To represent Jonas’s
Beginning: Freesia journey in the beginning, I
Flower chose a freesia flower. I
chose this because they
represent friendship,
trust, thoughtfulness and
innocence; Jonas’s traits in
the beginning of the novel.
The flower is
black and white
because in the
beginning,
Jonas’s world
was colorless
Jonas’s A red apple in a black and
Journey; white world represents
Middle: Jonas in the middle of his
Apple journey. In the book, an
apple changes color for
a split second, but
changes back. Color
continues to do this
throughout the book.
This represents Jonas, he is
stuck between wanting to be
the same as everyone else
and trust in his broken
society and wanting to know
the truth. He switches back
and forth just like the apple
and color in this part of the
novel.
Jonas’s Journey; The sky in the back can
End: Hill be taken as either sunset
or sunrise, beginning or
end. The scene on the hill
was the beginning of
Jonas’s change and the
end of how he viewed the
community.
Through the memories of
the hill, Jonas learns of the
connection between joy and
pain. Without one, the other
can not exist. This shows his
realization of a world outside
of the community and his
decision to leave.
Main Conflict; In our society today, megaphones are a symbol
Main v.s. Society: or rebellion or a fight for change; a symbol of
Megaphone people speaking out. This connects to the novel
because Jonas begins to rebel and speak out in
his own society.
Jonas calls for change. His
megaphone isn’t physical
though. It is the memories he
holds. They give him the
power to speak to the
people and show them how
to change, why they should
change.
Climax: Balloon
The climax of the novel
was when Jonas saw the
twin’s release. This event
was the straw that
broke the camel’s back
in Jonas’s case. This is
the turning point in the
story when Jonas let go
of his innocence
Resolution: Sled
The resolution of the novel is when
the memories are released. This
event is the end of the sleigh ride
described by The Giver. The main
ride is over, but Jonas still has to
push a little longer.
