HOW TO USE THIS LEARNER’S GUIDE

Welcome to the learner’s guide for the module SERVICING, REPAIRING
AND MAINTAINING SMALL GAS/DIESEL. This learners guide contains training
materials and activities for you to complete.

The unit of competency “ Service/Repair & Maintain Small Engine” contains
the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for a Farm Equipment Mechanic.
It is one of the Common Modules at National certificate Level (NC II).

You are required to go through a series of learning activities in order to
complete each learning outcomes of the module. In each learning outcomes there
are Information Sheets, Resources Sheets and Reference Materials for further
reading to help you better understand the required activities. Follow these activities
on your own and answer the self-check at the end of each learning outcome. You
may tear a blank answer sheets at the end of the module to reflect your answers for
each self-check. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to ask your facilitator for
assistance.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You may have some or most of the knowledge and skills covered in this learner’s
guide because you have:
 Been working for some time.
 Already completed training in this area.

If you can demonstrate to your trainer that you are competent in a particular skill, you
don’t have to do the same training again.

If you feel you have some of the skills, talk to your trainer about having them formally
recognized. If you have qualification or Certificates of Competence from previous
training, show it to your trainer. If the skills you acquired are still relevant to the
module, they may become part of the evidence you can present for RPL.

This module was prepared to help you achieve the required competency, in
depositing weld beads on steel plates. This will be the source of information for you
to acquire knowledge and skills in this particular trade, with minimum supervision or
help from your instructor. With the aid of these materials you will acquire the
competency independently and at your own pace.

At the end of this learner’s guide is a learner diary use this diary to record
important dates, jobs undertaken and other workplace events that will assist
you in providing further details to your trainer or assessors. A Record of
Achievement is also provided for your trainer to complete once you
completed the module.

2. Monitoring is implemented as per schedule.

3. Reports and findings are recorded as per evaluation.
4. Recommend findings for repair as per record of evaluation.

Learning Outcome 1: Explain the method on the care and maintenance
