452 Of the S acr am en t of E xtr em e Un c ti on tity of all the other S acraments flows) who would have doubted, if I had said Nothing else, how unworthily, without S cruple, he treats all the rest of the S acra ments ? Which, as you have seen , he has handled in such S ort, that he abolishes and destroys them all, except B aptism alone and that too, he has abused and deprived of all Grace ; leaving it for no other E n d , than in a C ontumely of Penance ; in some, denying the S ign , in others , the Matter itself : Neither proves he any Thing in this so great a M atter ; n or brings he any Thing in C onfirmation of his D octrine ; contenting himself in only denying whatever the C hurch admits . What every B ody believes, he alone, by his vain Reason, laughs at ; denouncing himself to admit Nothing, but clear and evident S criptures : A n d these too, if alledged by any against him, he either evades by some private E xposi tion of his own , or else denies them to belong to their own A uthors . None of the D octors are so antient , none so holy, none of so great A uthority in treating of Holy Writ : B u t this new D octor, this little S aint, this M an of Learning ; rejects with great A uthority . S eeing therefore he despiseth all Men , and believes none , he ought n ot to take it ill , if every B ody discredit him again . I am so far from intending to hold an y further D ispute with him, that I almost repent myself of what I have already argued against him . For what avails it to dispute against a Man , who disagrees with every one , even with himself ? who affirms in on e Place, what he denies in another ; denying what he presently affirms ; who, if you object Faith, combats by Reason ; if you touch him with Reason, pretends Faith ; if you alledge Phil osophers , he flies to S cripture ; if you propound S cripture , he tr ifie s with S ophistry who is ashamed of Nothing, fears none, and thin ks himself under no Law ; who contemns the antient D octors of the C hurch , and

454 Of the S acr am en t of E xtr em e Un cti on derides the new ones in the highest D egree ; loads with Reproaches the chief B ishop of the C hurch : Finally, he so undervalues the C ustoms, D octrine , Manners, Laws , D ecrees, and. Faith of the C hurch ; yea, the whole Church itself ; that he almost denies there is any such Thing as a C hurch ; except perhaps such a one as him self makes u p of two or three Heretics, of whom him self i s C hief . Wherefore , since he is such a one , as will have no solid or certain Principle betwixt himself and his A dversary ; but requires to be free in whatever pleases him, and as often as it pleases him lawfully to assert or deny ; when, neither Reason, S cripture, C u s ~ tom , Laws, human or divine A uthority, binds him : I thought it not fit to dispute any longer with him, nor to contend, by painful Reason, against his Heresies , which he confirms by no Reason . B u t I rather advise all C hristians, that , as the most exterminating of Plagues, they shun him, who endeavours to bring into the C hurch of C hrist such foul Prodigies, being the very D octrine of A ntichrist . For, if he , who studies to move a S chism in an y one Thin g, i s to be extirpated with all C are ; with what great E ndeavours is he to be rooted ou t, who, not only goes about to sew D issention, to stir up the People against the chief B ishop, C hildren against their Parents, C hristians against the Vicar of C hrist ; finally, who endeavours to dissolve by his Tumults , B rawls and C ontentions , the whole Church of C hrist, which he, in the Time of his precious D eath, has bound together by the B ond of Charity and Love ; an d also to destroy, pr ophan e and pollute, with a most execrable Mind, filthy Tongu e , and detestable Touch, what is most sacred therein ; who, if he did but give any Hopes of C ure in himself, or any S ign of A mendment , he would thereby move all People to regard D isposition , and to endeavour , by all go od Means possible, to heal him, and

456 Of the S acr am en t of E xtr em e Un c tion to restore him to S oundness of Mind, that he might again revoke the Heresies he has broached . B u t i n deed , as yet , I see in him all the S ig ns that precede D eath : I am not so much moved to think thus, by Reason of his D isease, though never so mortal ; as by his admitting no Medicine , nor of an y manual O pera tion of the C hyr u rg i on : For how can he be cured , who will not su f er himself to be handled Or in what M an ner is he to be dealt withal ; who, if you teach him, tr ifies with you If you advise him, is angry ? If you exhort him, resists If in any Thing you would appease him, is incensed — I f you resist him, is mad ? Otherwise , if he could be cured, what has the pious Vicar of C hrist omitted, who, following the E xample of a good S hepherd, would seek, find, take on hi s S houl ders, and bring home to the Fold this lost S heep ? B u t, alas ! the most gr eedy Wolf of Hell has surprized him, devoured and swallowed him down into the lowest Part of his B elly, where he lies half alive, and half dead in D eath : A n d whilst the pious Pastor calls him, and bewails his Loss, he belches ou t of the filthy M outh of the hellish Wolf these foul I n veig hin g s, which the E ars of the whole Flock do detest, disdain, and abhor . For, first of all, being unprovoked in any Kind, he proposed some A rticles of Indulgences ; in which , (n u der Pretence of Godliness , ) he most impiously defamed the C hief B ishop : A fterwards, that he might under Pretence of Honour and D uty, cast on the Pope the greater A spersion, he transmitted them to Rom e, as if submitting himself to the Pope ’ s Judgment ; but he aug m en ted them with D eclarations, much worse than they were themselves ; that it might appear to all Men , that the Pope would not be counselled by a good and pious Man , but derided by a kn avish little B rother, as if so stupid as to hold for an Honour such a C ontumely, as

458 Of the S acr am en t of E xtr em e Un cti on the like thereof had never before been heard . If the Pope deserved no Ill, why has this degenerate S on , cast a false and undeserving S candal on hi s Father ? B u t if any Thing had been done at R om e, which needed r e forming ; yet if Lu ther had been (as he would be ac counted) an honest Man , and zealous C hristian, he should not have preferred his own private Glory before the public Good of all others , nor have desired to have had the C redit of a S corner amongst the Wicked, laugh ing at the Nakedness of his sleeping Father, * uncover ing, and pointing thereto with his Finger ; but, contrar y wise, would have covered the same, and would have more secretly advised him in his own Person by Letters, fol lowing the E xample of the A postle , who commands us not to deride or reproach our S uperiors, but to seek of them zt Which if L u ther had done, I doubt n ot but the more holy P op e, ( so well is his great B enigni ty kn own to all Men ) being awakened, should have blessed his S on Japhet; would have rendered him Thanks for hi s Piety ; and would not have cursed him in his A nger ; who has forborn to curse him when he was mocked by him ; but, pitying the miserable, and (more tender of a S on , than mindful of a S coffer) has dealt with him by most honourable Men , in whose Presence he was n ot worthy to appear, that he might desist from his Iniqui ty : To which pious and wholesome C ounsel , he was so far from obeying, that he not only derided the Legate , careful for his S alvation, but also immediately published an other B ook, in which he endeavoured to overthrow the Pope ’ s Power : A fter which , he was summoned to Rom e, that he might either render Reasons of hi s Writings , or r e cant what he had inconsiderately written ; having an y S ecurity imaginable offered him, that he should not undergo the Punishment which he deserved, with su ffi *Gen . ix. 22 fol . + I .
