Parthenon- tasya

Parthenon

The Parthenon is a Greek temple built by Athena's patron in the 5th
century BC for the goddess Athena. The Parthenon is considered a
symbol of Ancient Greece and Athenian democracy, and is one of the
world's greatest cultural monuments.

The Parthenon which was built in the

5th century BC still stands

majestically at the top of the

Acropolis Hill, Greece. In the past,

the buiding was used as a place of

worship for the Goddess Athena.
However, not many know that a significant part of the Ancient Greek
icon was also used as a place of worship for Christians and Muslims.
First, the Athena Parthenos Temple was used as a church in the late
6th century AD. At that time, during the Byzantine rule, a number of
pagan statues in the temple were removed.

Architectural modifications were
also made, including changing the
building's entrance. The east door
to the temple was blocked, so the
congregation entered from the
West, according to traditional
Christian standards. A number of
church elements were also added.
Meanwhile, in the 15th century
AD, a significant part of the Parthenon functioned as a mosque by the
Ottoman Empire, Turkey, which at that time controlled Athens.
However, the Parthenon was later destroyed by battle. A new mosque
was later built within the ruins of the temple. Or in other words, there

were two mosques in the Parthenon.

Even though the Parthenon is now in a state that is no longer intact,
due to the bombing An attack by Venetian troops led by General
Francesco Morosini in 1687

destroyed the Parthenon Mosque
which was also used as an ammunition
storage area. As Venetian troops
surrounded the Acropolis, the Turks
took refuge in the hill. The Parthenon
remains Europe's most famous historic
site.
