A FOCUS ON
WELLBEING
Fast Company termed it
“environmental productivity“:
the science of how your
space supports (or handicaps) the work you
do. We spend so much of our lives indoors and
in the office that the modern workforce
is calling for efficient, flexible and
comfortable working environments.
The wellness trend is influencing two
aspects of décor: bringing the outdoors in and
natural, adaptable lighting. Having plants in the
office has been linked to a decrease in stress
and an increase in creativity. (See how interior
decorators have incorporated living walls in
the communal spaces of KPMG’s traditionally
corporate offices on page 40.)
More than simply energy saving, LEDs give
designers more control over a building’s
look and feel, allowing companies to layer
and design custom lighting schemes that
mimic natural light. (Find out how you can
get customised lighting solutions rendered in
3D from Spazio on page 60.) Researchers are
proving the link between effective office lighting
and mood, sleep and productivity. Turn to page

that make up the Holo collection. The Holo desk is moulded and shaped from sheet metal to create the
impressive oval hole beneath the gravity-defying table top.“The main feature of this project is its iconic and
sculptural form, and also the technology used to produce it. The base of Holo is made from a single sheet of

important when reconfiguring a space, office

● ● ● LIGHT: Whether it’s a high-end

How important is lighting in these spaces?
LEE-ANN: Lighting creates and defines,
and is crucial when transforming a space and
producing the right ambience. With corporate

where employees can take a moment to step
out from behind their screens.
● ● ● LIGHT: What is the most exceptional
transformation project you have worked on?
And how did you achieve it?
LEE-ANN: KPMG was a standout project for
us recently and the lighting was a prominent
aspect of it. We took the office from a
stereotypical large corporate interior, adding a
“design”aspect and giving thought and purpose
to the space, which helped bring it all together
for the employees and visitors. A combination
of soft furnishings and timber helped to warm
up the space and add to the livable feel of the
pause areas. (Turn to page 40 to see it.)

which complements our preferred modern and

OFFICE SPACE
Interior designer and founder of Mezzanine Lee-Ann Bell identifies three ways to improve office interiors.
1. Meeting pods are becoming popular as acoustics and privacy are proving important in open-plan environments.
2. Designers are responding to the company’s specific brand identity. One size does not fit all when it comes to design.
3. Firms are beginning to appreciate the value of fun lounge areas as a way to stimulate creativity.
