Title: Donate Blood
General purpose: To persuade people to give blood
Specific purpose: To persuade my audience to go out and give blood as a means to save lives.
Central idea: Donating blood not only saves others, but it saves ourselves too.

INTRODUCTION

Attention

I. One of the most valuable substances in our bodies is blood. It keeps our organs
functioning and circulates our internal systems. Blood circulates throughout our
bodies throughout the day, which is why we are all here today.

II. This is a fun fact. The majority of us here currently have 4.5 to 5.5 liters of blood in
our bodies on average. An average of 7000 liters of blood are pumped by our hearts
each day. Our blood travels 20,000 kilometers in one week. Our blood flows across
every organ in our body, connecting all of our cells, tissues, and organs. In high
school, do you recall learning about the parts of the heart and how the heart circulates
blood throughout the body's organs? What if our hearts were unable to function
properly? Due to a lack of blood, it is unable to fulfil its function.

III. Unfortunately, this occurs more frequently than you might imagine. People who lose
blood from accidents, hemorrhages during childbirth, and many other causes are
always in need of additional blood. Blood transfusions are then used to help save
these people's lives. But how can they accomplish it if there is not enough blood
supply?

IV. It is well known that the pandemic has put our nation, Malaysia, in risk of running out
of blood over the past year. To stop the spread of COVID-19, the Malaysian
government had to implement a Movement Control Order. As a result, the nation's
blood supply is at an emergency level, and I strongly encourage you all to give blood
now.

BODY

Need:

I. According to Malaysia's Director-General of Health, Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah, the
epidemic has caused a 40 percent decrease in the nation's blood bank supplies during
the past year. Given the constant need for blood, this number is very upsetting. Blood
collection has become incredibly difficult, putting the lives of many innocent people
who need blood transfusions at danger.
a. A great number of people who ought to live long lives are in
danger due to the lack of engagement from qualified blood
donors. You may be qualified to give blood and save lives if you
are generally healthy, disease-free, at least 17 years old, and have
a safe sexual lifestyle.
b. Blood transfusions would be helpful to millions of people
worldwide. Cancer patients, organ transplant recipients, and
surgery patients are further examples to those I stated earlier.
Blood donations would help everyone, including premature
babies and trauma victims.
c. Unintentional lives are saved by blood donations, that much is
true. You may not be aware, though, that it can also save yours.

(Transition: Let me clear the air on how you are able to save not only others, but your own
life too.)

Satisfaction

II. By giving blood just once, eligible donors can save up to three lives. The suggested
frequency of blood donation is once every three months, or four times each year. You
see, the three main components of the blood that you donate are red blood cells, white
blood cells, and platelets. These are all kept apart and used for various kinds of
therapies. White blood cells are utilized to combat infections, red blood cells to treat
anemia, and platelets to stop bleeding. Consider saving 12 lives over the course of a
year. After consistently giving blood for ten years, picture having saved up to 120
lives. Don't you feel like a million bucks after hearing that?
1. Blood donation is not as frightening as it may seem. Personally, I was
apprehensive about giving blood for the first time. It turned out to be a
straightforward process. And after 48 hours, your blood automatically
repairs itself.
2. They will first inquire about your sexual history and general health.
This is a crucial step in the donation process, and it calls for your
complete honesty because certain conditions may put your blood at
risk of containing diseases that could then be transmitted to people
receiving blood transfusions. Following the health-related questions,
they will take a blood sample from your finger to calculate the
proportion of red blood cells in your blood. Additionally, your heart
rate, temperature, and blood pressure will be measured.
3. By reducing the quantity of iron in your blood, which can cause
cardiovascular issues, blood donation lowers the risk of having a heart
attack. A study found that even one blood donation year can cut the
risk of a heart attack by 88 percent. Because there is less iron in your

blood, it can also maintain the health of your liver. Therefore, by
saving lives, you are also saving your own life in addition to those of
others.
4. All you need to do to give blood is go to the nearest blood drive or the
National Blood Centre Donation Suite and let them know you want to.

(Transition: If that was not enough to persuade you to donate blood, let me bring it to life by
telling you a story about my little cousin)

Visualization

III. Amelia, an 8-year-old child, was diagnosed with cancer when she was just 3 years
old. Her abdomen had a big tumor that required extensive surgery to remove. She
spent the most of her life receiving chemotherapy and treatments for infections that
she might have contracted as a result of the reduction in her white blood cells.
1. Her physician estimated that she required more than 200 units of blood to
replenish all the cells lost throughout her chemotherapy treatments.
2. I personally saw how devastated her parents were. Due to her cancer
treatment, Amelia was in excruciating agony and believed that she would
never be able to go to school, enjoy having friends, or graduate from high
school—things that the majority of us take for granted. She was
successfully cancer-free after years of grueling treatments and blood
transfusions.
3. Thanks to everyone who gave blood, she was able to live and is now
enjoying a longer and happier life. This cherished child has been granted a
second chance at life.

CONCLUSION

A. Finally, if you are able to, I hope everyone in this room will start donating blood. Please
act to help perhaps save another young Amelia who may be out there. You have no idea how
incredible it will be to perhaps save just one life. to be able to give someone who needs it a
second chance.
B. Empathy for those around us is the foundation for a successful and joyful existence. You
never know, your loved one may receive the blood you donate if they ever find themselves in
need of a blood transfusion. For once, let yourself feel heroic. Take advantage of the chance
to save lives and give the greatest gift of all—life.
