CCSCCONATCRTOIVLITOIRESDEDRU(RMINCGOM) POEVREIOMDENT

The year 2020 is

significant to

Malaysians as the

nation launched its

“Vision 2020’ in 1991

with the objective of

becoming a fully

developed country by

2020. However, little

that we expect of how

our normal lives would

change to adapting a

new normal – due to

the outbreak of

coronavirus disease

(COVID-19).

The virus is

transmitted through

direct contact with

respiratory droplets of

an infected person

(through coughing and

sneezing)

or from touching surfaces contaminated with the virus and touching their face (e.g.
eyes,  nose.  mouth).  As  the  virus  spread  to  many  countries  and  while  a  lot  is
still unknown about the virus, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the
outbreak as a pandemic. As a result, many countries implemented ‘lockdown’ to slow
down the spread of the coronavirus and adopt preventive measures through physical
distancing and observance of general hygiene measures.

With the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO) in Malaysia from 18
March 2020, CCSC would like to assure our continued commitment to provide the IIUM
community with ongoing services during these challenging times.

We are committed to minimize the impact of COVID-19 and our teams will be working
from home and will continue to work hard to ensure there is no disruption to our
services

SURVEY ON IIUM STUDENTS’ WELL BEING

During crisis/disasters/outbreak, any individual may be affected emotionally as
it is common for them to feel stressed, worried and anxious. The COVID-19
outbreak can cause strong emotions and psychological impact on individuals
depending on different situations. There were a number of IIUM students
stranded on campus when the MCO was enforced. Separated from family
members and friends, and not being able to perform outdoor routines are
among the situations that may caused negative psychological impact for some
students.

CCSC has conducted two (2) surveys in order to understand general well-being
and needs of IIUM students especially those staying on campus during the MCO
period.    The surveys would also help to identify students with high risk that
need immediate support  from  the  University  and  further  action  by  the
University  Management.  The survey includes Depression Anxiety Stress Scales
(DASS) 21, which is a tool for screening and assessment designed to measure
the emotional states of depression, anxiety  and  stress.  and  was  distributed
through  various  platforms  i.e.  Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp.

Survey on IIUM Students’ Well-Being: Phase 1

SPECIAL COLUMN: CCSC @ MCO

The 1st phase of the survey was administered using Google Form from 25th until 31st
March 2020 and received feedback from a total of 999 respondents from Gombak,
Kuantan and Pagoh campuses. The outcome of the survey was presented to the IIUM
Sejahtera Covid Team on 3rd April 2020 whereby 117 students of high-risk group
(extremely severe based on DASS 21) were identified and needed psychological and
emotional support.

Survey on IIUM Students’ Well-Being: Phase 2

This survey is a continuation and improvement from the first survey to assess the well-
being of IIUM students staying on campus with the extension of MCO and their
readiness after the MCO is lifted. The 1st phase of the survey was administered using
Google Form from 9th until 15th April 2020 and received feedback from a total of 520
respondents from Gombak, Kuantan and Pagoh campuses. The study also captured
some data of students staying at home so that comparison could be made
accordingly. The outcome of the survey was presented to the University Management
Committee  (UMC)  and  IIUM  Sejahtera  Covid  Team  on  14th  April  2020.
