Herstory PSI LAMBDA OMEGA CHAPTER Psi Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc. was chartered on February 7, 2009 with 39 women who stood on the promise that new things will be manifested. With a current membership of over 100 collegetrained women, we dedicatedly serve the Brooklyn, New York Community. We are a purpose driven and program-centered Chapter. Our strength lies in respect for individual voices, talents and contributions. The members of Psi Lambda Omega Chapter's collective efforts are enhanced by personal and professional diversity within the membership. Psi Lambda Omega chapter's service programs and events are meticulously designed to positively impact the community while continuing the Sorority’s rich tradition of service to all mankind and lifelong sisterhood. In fifteen years, our programs have left lasting memories in the hearts and minds of individuals in Brooklyn and Staten Island. These programs have included: Youth Health Summits, Healthy Teeth Program, Baby Hugs, Pack-A-Pantry, social justice and human rights programs, International Women’s Day forums, and the annual Back-to-School Jamboree program. Our chapter members have also piloted several fundraisers in support of the bi-annual Phyllis Atwater Scholarship and Educational Advancement Foundation - Avis D. Ellison Fellowship Award ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INC. Founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC in 1908. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American college-trained women. The small group of women who organized the Sorority was conscious of a privileged position as college-trained women of color, just one generation removed from slavery. They were resolute that their college experiences should be as meaningful and productive as possible. Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded to apply that determination. As the Sorority grew, it kept in balance two important themes: the importance of the individual and the strength of an organization of women of ability and courage. As the world became more complex, there was a need for associations which cut across racial, geographical, political, physical and social barriers. Alpha Kappa Alpha’s influence extends beyond campus quads and student interest. It has a legacy of service that deepens, rather than ends, with college graduation. The goals of its program activities center on significant issues in families, communities, government halls and world assembly chambers. Its efforts constitute a priceless part of the global experience in the 21st century. Since its founding, Alpha Kappa Alpha’s mission has been to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women, improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be of “Service to All Mankind."

In lessthan one yearin the position of President, Dr.Ramseywasinvited to testify before the Congressional Committee on Education and Labor (now the Committee on Education and the Workforce), where she represented Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs) nationally. Taking advantage of the opportunity to speak directly to the lawmakers, Dr. Ramsey requested more federal funding but also used that platform to advocate for change in the federal definition ofretention and graduation rates, asthe current definition helpsto generate a false narrative aboutthe greatwork thatMedgarEversCollege and like institutions do to positively impactsocialmobility.
