Editor’s Notes

The January notes indicated my intention to remain as Editor for both this and the July 2018
editions. On reflection it seems better to make this edition my last one as Editor linking the
changeover to the YCBA AGM in June at which time I will also not be seeking re-election to
the Management Board.

At the time of writing a new Editor is yet to be identified but hopefully one can be found
quickly as communication is an important element of a County Association’s work. We would
be lost without the website that Rob Turner has maintained so diligently ever since its
inception. This Newsletter supplements that main communication base.

Again I would like to thank all contributors over the last three years and it is to be hoped
that reports on events, articles, letters/emails, news, views and opinions are forthcoming
to assist my successor.

For the next edition, the County Chairman, Nick Woolven ([email protected]), has
kindly agreed to be the initial recipient for any such material which he will forward to the
next Editor to whom I convey my good wishes.

Daniel Winter

Congratulations to Daniel who played for the EBU team in the Junior Camrose. He's one of the
youngest players ever to play in a Junior Camrose. The event was held over the weekend of 17
and 18 February and the EBU team finished a highly creditable 2nd behind the England team.

Hopefully Daniel will be participating in the 2018 World Youth Team Championships, held in
China in August. There are a several fundraising activities set up to support this venture. The
YCBA is making a contribution but Daniel has set up a page for donations. Individuals wishing to
contribute can do so via - https://www.gofundme.com/world-youngsters-team-championship

Yorkshire League: Season 2017/2018

Division Winners Runners Up Relegated

1 Leeds A Sheffield A Unresolved

2 Sheffield B Wakefield A Sheffield D & Harrogate A

3 Keighley A Doncaster B Beauchief A & Thirsk A

4 Ilkley B Garforth A Bradford B & Wetherby B

5 Shelley Wakefield B Ilkley C & Malton B

7 York D Wakefield C Doncaster D & Halifax A

8 Thirsk B Barnsley A Huddersfield D & Keighley D

9 Garforth B Wakefield D Ilkley E and Brighouse C

10 Sheffield H Hudderfield E

Congratulations to all the winners and good luck to Leeds A when representing Yorkshire in the
Garden Cities Regional Final - and, hopefully, the National Final. Leeds A were the only team in
all ten divisions to go through the season undefeated. Philip Mason reports that from his records
dating back to the 1985-86 season, Sheffield has been victorious on 20 occasions, Bradford 10
and York two so Leeds may well feel that their turn is long overdue.

The unresolved issues arise from postponed matches yet to be played. Many thanks to all who

braved the snow to play on the final fixture date of the season.

Vote of Thanks
The Harrogate Spring Congress proved to be another example of the YCBA’s first class ability
at arranging and holding national events. A warm vote of thanks goes to all involved in the
setting up and running of the event. Following feedback, times next year will involve earlier start
and finish times, with a shortened dinner break so that players can leave earlier.

EBU 2018 Summer Festival Midweek Competitions

The Midweek competitions which are usually held on the evenings at the Summer Meeting will
continue as part of the 2018 Summer Festival but with a change to the usual arrangements.
This year they will held as multi-venue competitions with the same hands played
simultaneously at clubs across the country and scored across the whole field.

Clubs are invited to hold a heat of as many of the following four events as they wish:
Mon 6th August: Play with the Experts pairs (historical hands, scored by Butler IMPs with
notional expert team-mates).
Tue 7th August: GCH Fox Pairs Championship One-winner pairs championship
Wed 15th August: Mixed Pivot Teams Teams must have at least one man and one woman,
and they rotate partnerships after each nine boards.
Thu 16th August: Mixed Pairs Championship One-winner pairs championship
