YCBA NEWS

Issue 13 (Previously YCBA Bulletin)

January 2018

Editor’s Notes

Having had a previous spell of the YCBA Bulletin as Editor in the late Nineties; in the
summer of 2015 I again took on the role of Editor. Regular readers will recall that my first
steps were to alter the name of the publication to YCBA NEWS and, more radically, change
the method of production and distribution away from centrally printed paper copies delivered
to individual clubs, to electronic circulation via Club Secretaries. Later on we also introduced
direct mailing using the Pianola database.

By the time of the July 2018 edition I will have been editor for 15 issues this time round, and
have decided to relinquish the role at that point. Thus, a new Editor will be required and
anyone interested in taking on the responsibility should contact either myself (see below) or
the County Chairman, Nick Woolven (Tel: 01484 865170 or 07445 892452).

Ideally, it would be good if my successor is in place before the July edition and we could
work together on that publication.

I will reiterate the point in July but would like to record my sincere thanks to the Club
Secretaries for their help in bringing the publication to the attention of members and all those
who have contributed articles since 2015. I think Dave Robinson has a 100% record as a
provider of material and so deserves a special thank you.

Northern Bridge League 2017

The final round of the four session Northern Bridge League was completed in October. In the A
League Yorkshire 1 finished in third place with Yorkshire 2 4th out of the six teams. Yorkshire
ended up fourth out of eight teams in the B League. In the C League Yorkshire South East were
successful for the fourth successive year in winning the C League with Yorkshire North West
coming third out of the seven teams taking part.

In the last round, as in the third, there were no outstanding team performances from any team or
pair but notable successes in earlier rounds saw:

In Round 1:

A Division - Yorkshire 2 (George Bak & Stuart Davies; Alan Vrosgill & Robin Jepson; John
Hayton & Mike Jackson and Frank Littlewood & David Musson) - First place

George Bak & Stuart Davies were the top scoring pair in the field

C Division - Yorkshire North and West (lan Ardron & David Donaldson Ruth Barker & John
Blackett, Lesley Bridson & Catherine Thompson and Robert Cave & Anne Rowan) - First place

In Round 2:

A Division - Yorkshire 1 Frank Littlewood & David Musson; Richard Pike & David Waxman;
Dave Robinson & Daniel Winter; Sarah Teshome, Richard Winter - First place1st

Dave Robinson &Daniel Winter were the top scoring pair in the field

C Division - Yorkshire South and East (S/E) Barbara Boaler & Richard Draycott; Nick Dyer &
Mike Perry; Annette Jackson & Tricia Pearce and Stuart Kay & James Carpenter

Barbara and Richard were the top scoring pair in the field

Congratulations yet again to Yorkshire S/E and we wish them good luck in the Inter Counties
national final next June. Over the season they have been represented by the following players:

Nigel Bean & Chris Gough; Lesley Blanchard & Stuart Fletcher; Barbara Boaler & Richard
Draycott; Dave Duckworth and Robin Warner; Nick Dyer & Mike Perry; Glyn Foley & Peter Camm;
Annette Jackson & Tricia Pearce Terry Jacobs and David Narcross, and Stuart Kay & James
Carpenter. Mary Whyms partnered both Rod Hose and Rob Turner in different sessions.

Is that Natural? Dave Robinson

A silly hand from the Sheffield local league

Playing in a very lively 24 hand match where no less than 7 slams were available 5 of them on
consecutive hands (is that a record?) This was hand 1.

87 KQ108754 K8 J3

Void AJ9632
AQJ97 5
K10654 AQ2
KJ5 A96

987 Q10432 Void 106432

Pete Waterman, North, opened 3S and I managed to stifle the “is that natural question”
concentrating on not betraying my joy on what was to come!! My partner, Rod Hose, duly obliged
with a double and try as he may Pete had to go 5 down 1100 to us. When we scored up ashen
faced team mates confessed to a disaster on hand 1- don't worry I said not only is it a flat board but
we missed the1440 score from 7D

Actually the odds of any 5 consecutive hands being makeable slams is only about 1/30,000, the
odds of any 2 of them being grand slams (as was the case) raises the odds to around 1/50,000. The
odds on 5 consecutive grand slams is about 1/8 million - now that would really be something!

Tollemache Cup

The Tollemache Cup is the EBU’s annual inter-county championships for teams of eight and is
open to all county associations. This year the qualifying event was held on 18th - 19th November
2017, played in four sections with 35 counties taking part.

Yorkshire was drawn in a fairly tough group having to play Berks and Bucks, Cumbria, Devon,
Gloucestershire, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, Nottinghamshire and Somerset. At the end of
the first day Yorkshire were very much in contention for finishing in the top two and so qualify for
the Final in February. However, on day two very disappointing defeats against the two Counties
lying in the bottom positions meant that Yorkshire finished 5th out of the eight teams.

Yorkshire's team was Graham Jepson (non-playing captain); George Bak & Stuart Davies; Tom
Copeland & Alan Hayward; Sandra Penfold &Brian Senior; Dominic Rayner & David Waxman and
David Robinson and Daniel Winter.

It is fair to say that the YCBA can take a lot of positives from the weekend despite failing to take
advantage of opportunities against the weaker teams proving costly. The ten players included five
“Tollemache debutants” and, more satisfyingly four of them can certainly be counted as young
players with Daniel being just seventeen years old.

YCBA Members meeting 26 November 2016 Key Points

Nineteen members present

National Issues

 Gordon Rainsford is new General Manager taking over from the retiring Barry Capal
 New laws had been introduced in April 2017 and courses had provided locally to help club

directors
 A final decsion by the European Court means that bridge does not qualify as a sport
 Pay to Play increases from 37p to 38p in April 2018
 The EBU has suffered a yearly loss of £25,000 - Part of the reason for the loss is the

success of national teams.
 The number of clubs affiliated nationally has dropped from 615 to 613
 County working groups operate successfully in the North and Midlands but not so

successfully in the South.

County Issues

 Yorkshire is in a very healthy position financially and continuing to run 3 events successfully
for the EBU.

 Results of county events detailed (reported elsewhere)

Bridge Development Issues and Membership Drive Issues

 The Bridge Development Committee has met quarterly to address the modernisation of the
game and membership across the County.

 The YCBA have appointed a Bridge Development Officer, David Guild
 “City Centre Bridge” – a trial in Leeds led by Tom Copeland and Alan Hayward. They will be

going into large companies and holding classes after work.
 Phil Morrison from Leeds has been appointed as County Youth Officer
 David Guild indicated that he was available to advise any club on possible methods of

marketing bridge and attracting new members. He suggested that targeted rather than
“blunderbuss” marketing was more effective.

The next meeting is the Annual General Meeting which will take place on Saturday 02 June 2017
at the Cairn Hotel Harrogate at 11.30 am as part of the YCBA Congress.
