Offering more to current, new and potential members
FIRSTLY, I must apologise for not providing an update in the May edition as I promised myself I
always would. I was playing golf at an all-inclusive resort in Belek, Turkey with the motley crew
pictured below and unfortunately my priorities somehow got confused.
Can I welcome a small number of new seven-day and five-day members (male) to the Club, some of
whom have been on our waiting list for two years; a warm welcome from all of us.
We also invited another 20 to take part in a ‘waiting list’ game of golf on May 15th. I think it is vital that
we stay in contact with these potential members if we are to maintain their loyalty and enthusiasm
especially given the honest, yet disappointing, reality of them having to wait a good while longer.
The winner of the event, which was a huge success, posted a score of 43 stableford points; he will
be a most popular member I’m sure (lol).
I have arranged a Captain’s Away Day at Buckingham Golf Club for August 19th, and it would be
great to see new faces at this event.
The cost will be £40 including bacon and coffee on arrival, 18 holes, two-course dinner and
prizes. There are no reserved places so if you fancy joining us, please email me asap on
[email protected]. First come first served.
Our Hollingsworth Trophy team have finished their campaign for 2022 and narrowly missed out on
winning their group. My thanks and congratulations go to all who played, especially to Sam Waite
who has proven to be a first-class Captain.
Hopefully, you read the recent email confirming that our Lady Captain, Sheena (Markham), and
myself, have agreed a reciprocal golf arrangement with St. Ives Golf Club in Cambridgeshire.
If you do make use of this facility, please can you provide feedback to us about your experience, both
good and not so good.
Lastly, I must pass on my sincere thanks and best wishes to Sue and David Waite and wish you both
the very best in your retirement. I have personally witnessed the extreme effort you have put into
making Wellingborough Golf Club the brilliant place it is today. Thank you.

Wellingborough Golf Club Captain.

Making a positive impression with our visitors
WE had our exchange day on May 17th with the ladies
from Birstall Golf Club, whose Ladies Captain Joyce
Calow said: “What a fabulous day the ladies from Birstall
Golf Club (pictured right) had at Wellingborough last
Tuesday.
“The course, the welcome, the food were all excellent.
Plus, the weather, and of course the fly-past (pictured
below)!
“Many thanks to Pauline Kendall for meeting and
greeting us - it must have been a bit like herding
cats at one point. But she did an excellent job and
made us feel very welcome. Also thank you to Mr. Starter for getting us all off the first tee.”
Apparently, they were enjoying the Clubhouse and its history so much they had to be chased
to the tee by Pauline. Thank you, Paul (Sisman), for being the starter and for being so patient.
Our ladies had a fabulous day too at Birstall - the golf course was lovely as was the welcome we
received. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a fly-past, but we had a lot of fun with the birthday girls!
Congratulation to Gill Snelson who had a hole in one on the fourth hole at Wellingborough on
Thursday, May 26th, whilst playing in a friendly against Northampton. The team won 6-0.
On the same day, and this may sound like the No. 19 bus that never comes on time, we had another
hole-in-one as well! So many congratulations from the ladies section to Steve Hammond who
achieved his ace on the 11th hole.
A reminder that my Charity Day is on Wednesday, August 24th, in aid of Dementia Sings Out. We
are receiving bookings already. Please support this worthwhile charity by entering a team or donating
a raffle prize. Thank you, and happy golfing.

Trio of Club members make County Ladies Team
THREE Wellingborough members have been picked to play for the Northamptonshire Ladies team
in the Midlands South Region County Match Week tournament at Leamington and County GC,
Warwickshire from June 13th-15th.
In one of the youngest squads in County history, teenagers Leah Ribano and Chelsey
Sharp will be joined by fellow Wellingborough golfer and County Director of Ladies
Teams, Claire Lindsay.
Although Lindsay missed the Ladies County Championship at Cold Ashby GC last
month, Ribano and Sharp earned their selection with stellar performances in the
strokeplay and matchplay rounds of the tournament.
Ribano (pictured right) finished as the top seed in strokeplay qualifying before
going on to win the matchplay final for the first time, while third seed
Sharp knocked out defending champion Millie Billson in the quarter-
finals, before losing to Baylie Pyke in the last four.
Lindsay, whose team play matches against Oxfordshire,
Worcestershire and Herefordshire, Warwickshire, Berkshire and 2021
winners Buckinghamshire, said: “This year’s County Week team is one
of the youngest that Northamptonshire has put out to represent the
County, but with a reason.
“Every single member of this team has definitely earned their place with
fantastic achievements. We now look forward to a successful tournament.”

Seniors section can’t Waite to see David back on the course
SENIORS Captain Graham Thompson said: “After two years of disruption and restrictions, Seniors’
golf at Wellingborough is returning to normal. This year we have all our regular competitions back,
like the Redgwell Cup Summer Singles, which is in progress.
“We already have a winner in one of our ‘majors’ - David Farmer taking the honours in the Winter
Singles Knockout in a close fought final match against Gerry McGrady.
“The annual Seniors Lonsdale, with the best six scores to count from the nine competitions, is
already one third of the way through.
“The Seniors also have a full 2022 season of 28 matches against other golf clubs - the latest reports
are on the next page.
“As usual, we entered the annual Northamptonshire Golf Seniors’ Team Knockout Competition. This
event was the initiative of our member, Andrew Charter, a few years ago, and we delivered the
goods by winning in the first season.
“However, since then, we seem to have made a habit of losing away to Oundle in the opening round.
This year we have managed to avoid being knocked out by Oundle, but instead lost to Northampton
in the first round 3-2!
“Finally, we must thank David Waite for all the invaluable help and guidance that he has given to our
section over the last 16 years.
“David has always been very patient with us, especially in coming to grips with new systems and
modern technology. We wish him and wife Sue (both pictured below) all the best in their retirement.
“And, now that David has lots of spare time, we hope to see him playing with us in matches very
soon.”
