A busy month, but still more to come in weeks ahead
MY Captain’s Day held on July 30th was a great
success. A big thank you from me for the wonderful
support from our Ladies section, especially Liz Waine,
Jenny Wilkinson, Ruth Bowe, Miriam Johnson and of
course Sheena Markham.
We raised over £900 on the day for our Charities (NDAS
and Dementia Sings Out) which is a real added bonus,
so thank you all.
The Texas Scramble format was well received and
congratulations to Luke Perkins, Mick Matthews, Wayne
Dent and Richard Walmsley for scoring a remarkable net
53 and winning on countback.
The lowest gross score of 57 and best dressed team
has to go to James Northern, Elliott Morgan, Shea Smith
and Tyler Maher (pictured below) proving that collar-less
shirts can look smart. Who knows perhaps we are ready
for “hoodies”!?
July started with our Championship Weekend and the
standard of golf in all three competitions was extremely
high. I decided (hic) not to qualify for the second day but
to spend the time watching, learning and organising.
Again, a huge thank you to Steve Munns who seemed to
give up his whole weekend to support us.
As detailed in this month’s edition, our Club Champion
is James Northern who led the field from the start and
ended up five clear of the field; a worthy Champion. If
you carry on like this James, I will be auctioning off your
signed shirts etc rather than asking you for Charley Hull’s!
The play-off for the Charles Griffiths Bowl between Adam
Folwell and Jon Critchley was very tense, with about 50 of
us following them closely down the first fairway. How they
both played the shots they did in those circumstances I
will never know? I bottle it if my playing partners so much as breathe loudly. Jon narrowly missed his
putt and Adam calmly secured the winning putt.
Steve Coles was winning the Rabbits Cup until the very last group when Adam Taylor, despite going
over the wall on the 18th green, secured the Cup with a net 67. Congratulations to both Adams.
During July we also enjoyed the Glazerite Trophy, We Mind and Kelly Matters Charity Day and the
July Medal. These events take an enormous amount of preparation and support with a number of
volunteers giving up their time in support of Charity efforts; well done all.
Here’s to a quieter August… Wait, we have our Charity Shield Day on August 5th and the Ladies
Charity Day on August 24th.
More importantly, four of our Members will be getting married to each other during August and holding
their big day at the Golf Club. Congratulations and best wishes to Anita Royals and David Farmer, and
to Gaynor Arnott and Neil Robinson, I look forward to hearing your flawless speeches, David and Neil.
Roy Pouncey,
Wellingborough Golf Club Captain.

Phew, what a scorcher for the Ladies Captain’s Day!
LADIES Captain Sheena Markham said: “I prayed for lovely
weather for my Ladies Captain’s Day and as ladies were dropping
out the day before because of the heat I thought I should try a
little blasphemy!
“Fortunately, the day proved to be a lot cooler with a lot of cloud
for the 51 ladies that played. The overall winner was Carole
Cornforth (pictured with myself) with 42 points.
“I really enjoyed the day. Thank you to my committee for their
help, Mr President and Paul Sisman for being excellent starters
and Emily for the lovely refreshments. I think the Pimms should
be a regular beverage at the Kitchen Garden!
“Cecil Leitch Team Black are through to the Quarter finals against
Northants County playing at Daventry GC on August 9th. We
wish them luck, and a Win!
“The Annodata team would like to thank the organiser of their celebratory Party in the Gardens for
their big win against Northants County ladies on July 16th. The result was 3-2 with all our ladies
(pictured below) winning on the 18th hole.
“They play away next against Stratford-on-Avon, so with our new General Manaager in mind, the
team maybe looking for a blow-by-blow account of the course and maybe a caddie!
“We sadly had to cancel our Club Championships due to the extreme heatwave. We were due to play
on the hottest two days of the year. It is now rescheduled for August 30th-31st.
“The annual Lady Captain’s holiday is happening from July 31st through to August 2nd, so 36 ladies
are at The Abbey Hotel and Golf course in Redditch. We may or may not release some pictures!
Hopefully there will be some great golf, lots of fun and early nights! :) Erm…..?
“I’m looking forward to the Captain’s Charity Shield. I have a fabulous winning team of eight ladies.
Let’s raise a lot of money for The Captains Charity Northampton Domestic Abuse Service.
“Happy Golfing.”

Championship trophy goes in a Northern direction
JAMES Northern was crowned Men’s Club
Champion for 2022 after a dominant performance
over 36 holes at Wellingborough GC.
The two-handicapper carded an opening score
of 73 to sit two strokes ahead of Gary Grimmitt at
the half way stage, with former champion Chris
Howes a further shot back in third.
Northern (pictured left with Club Captain Roy
Pouncey) maintained his good form into the
final day as he fired a round of 74 to extend his
advantage to five shots from Sam Waite, who
carded the same second day score to grab the
runners-up prize by two from Grimmitt.
Elliott Morgan, defending champion Jon Harris
and Howes finished a further stroke adrift on
155.
The mid-handicap category, which is also played over 36 holes, witnessed a thrilling conclusion as
Adam Folwell lifted the Charles Griffiths Bowl after beating Jon Critchley in a play-off.
Folwell (pictured bottom left) came from five shots behind Christopher Otterwell at the half way point
as he added a brilliant second round 82 to his opening 89 to finish tied with Critchley, who carded
scores of 85 and 86. Paul Londors finished third on 173.
The Rabbits Cup, which is a net competition for the high-handicappers played over 18 holes, went
to Adam Taylor (pictured bottom right) as he posted an excellent net 67 to finish a couple of shots
clear of runner-up Steve Coles. Sean Hughes was a further two strokes back in third position.

Rees secures County Ladies Bronze Championship
LIZ Rees (Wellingborough) was crowned County Ladies Bronze Champion after finishing three
strokes clear of the chasing pack with a round of 96 at Rushden GC.

challenge of runner-up Rosie Cullis (Kingsthorpe) and Wellingborough club-mate Bina Shah, who
picked up the net prize with a 74.
The County Men’s Seniors Championship, which was scheduled to be played at Wellingborough golf

year, the 18-hole tournament has been re-arranged for Monday, August 22nd.
Chris Billson, Roger Butler, Ashley Connolly, Glenn Harris, Charlie Higgins, Alan Lindsay, Alan
Moreland, Jon Payne, Ricky Sanders and Michael Spence will also be hoping to make the most of

We Mind and Kelly Matters Charity Golf Day
FIVE points was the winning margin in the inaugural We Mind and Kelly Matters Charity Golf Day as
the One Four Six team of David Williams, Tom Jullings, Rob Whaley and Matt Mills came out on top.
With an excellent tally of 104 points at Wellingborough GC, they finished clear of the T&W Civil
Engineering line-up of Martin Burchnall, Adam Burchnall, Jack Burchnall and Adrian Negus.
Third place went to the Concept Tiles team of Mark Walker, Carl Hughes, Aaron Baker and Dave
Connolly (98) by one from the Mews Windows side that featured Peter Mew, Stephen Wyke, Ricky
Sanders and event organiser John Hewitt.
Sanders also bagged the nearest the pin in two on the eighth, Mark Hedley won the same accuracy
competition on the 18th, while Brian Morris emphasised his skills on short holes by winning the
nearest the pin on both the fourth and 11th holes.
The Longest Drive prize went to James Pacifici, while former Club Captain George Khaw earned
the chance to drive a BMW for the weekend, courtesy of Wollaston BMW, by clinching the putting
competition.
With former England Captain Dylan Hartley taking part in an event that included a meal and an
auction for some top memorabilia, a significant amount of money was raised for charity.
After waiting two years to hold the day due to coronavirus restrictions, Hewitt was delighted with how
well it went and in particular the opportunity to raise more awareness of mental health.
He said: “This was supposed to happen in 2020 to coincide with the first bike ride we did, but
obviously covid scuppered that. So this was the first opportunity since then.
“Since the first bicycle ride, Kelly’s Heroes seems to have really taken off - we have sold loads of
shirts and golf packs and raised plenty of awareness on social media.
“We have been very successful in pulling in new faces, with different businesses supporting this
event, which means there are going to be more people aware of the charity.
“A couple of weeks ago, we received an email from someone who was being bounced around social
services. She had lost her daughter in March and had a 10-year-old son, who was really struggling
and she was worried that she might lose him. We responded within an hour and got them on the road
to recovery, and now the journey starts for them.
“We have the capabilities and resources to support people, we have councillors waiting but not
enough people know about us. That’s what this day was all about it - raising awareness.”

Full Set with... John Hewitt
IN the latest of a series of Q&A features with the Harrowden Hall personnel, Wellingborough Golf
Club Magazine chatted with the person leading the latest epic Kelly’s Heroes cycle ride.
What is your full title?
Founder/Trustee We Mind and Kelly Matters.
What is your golf handicap?
13.
Why did you join Wellingborough Golf Club?
I tried to join when I was playing football but there
was a big waiting list, and I didn’t get in. But five years
later, when I stopped playing football, I joined. Now
I’m in my 23rd year.
My perfect fourball would be?
Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Alan Shearer and myself.
Best golf course you have ever played?
TPC Sawgrass.
What did you want to be when you were a child?
I initially wanted to be a professional footballer, but as I went through my teenage years that
changed to being a PE teacher. And then I realised I just preferred to play sport.
What would you change about yourself?
Going back, I’d have ensured I wasn’t so ignorant to mental health. Going forward, and
it’s something I’ve realised over the last few days, I need to stop saying ‘yes’ to everything
because I leave myself juggling too many balls.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Nice holidays. None of us have had enough of those in recent years.
What has been the best advice you have ever been given?
You can’t help everybody, but everybody can help somebody.
If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?
Give a huge chunk of it away to family and friends.
What do you do in your spare time?
Chilling out at home with the wife and dogs, and cycling - I appreciate I’m currently training
for a ride, but since I found cycling there are massive benefits to physical and mental health.
What is your favourite TV show or film?
Only Fools and Horses is probably my favourite TV show. I haven’t necessarily got a
favourite film, but if forced to pick one, I’d go for The Hangover.
What has been the highlight of your golfing career so far?
Although I’ve won the VE Cup, winning the Fish Cup (twice) with Martin Annis and the Grey
Jones with Rick Sanders was better. Part of being a winning team makes it more special.
What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a golf course?
Charlie Higgins jumping in the lake on the 18th hole. On the back of that he became ill for
his Captain’s Year. So it’s definitely not something I, or Charlie, would recommend. But it
was funny!

Party in the Gardens goes off with a bang... again!
CLUB Social Committee member Paul Sisman
said: “What a fantastic night this year’s Party in
the Gardens was, bathed in sunshine, two great
bands and amazing support from members and
guests with the dancefloor packed at times in the
heat.
“A big thank you to Rod Gibbs who introduced
the concept to Wellingborough Golf Club, when
Northampton Concert Orchestra first appeared
on the patio all those years ago in the pouring
rain.
“Who could forget Swing the Thing, when the
singers couldn’t get on the stage and sang
holding umbrellas on the lawn, members dancing
to ABBA with brollies tucked down their backs,
and my family leaping around to Dancing Queen,
how embarrassing!
“We have also welcomed tribute acts for Take
That, The Rolling Stones, ABBA and Queen,
all complimented by support bands, who have
mostly come from the local area.
“What a relief this year was, perfect weather and
complimented by two extremely talented bands
for my last year of organising the event.
“I would like to thank all those who have helped
over the years to make this such a brilliant event,
particularly my grandson Charlie who has helped
me for the last few years. I have loved every
minute of it, and wish my successor all the very
best.”

Extreme weather brings out the best in club staff
RECORD breaking hot temperatures across the UK in recent weeks has meant Golf Clubs, including
Wellingborough, have needed to work extra hard to maintain the course, gardens, plants and wildlife.
But, as Wellingborough Club Gardener and Handyman Don Russo explained, the staff at Harrowden
Hall have done a great job in difficult circumstances.
He said: “On the two hottest days, it was windy as well, so that dries everything up - twice or three
times as quickly as normal - so you needed to get in early.
“When the grass stops growing, it’s just a case of keeping everything alive, including myself, because
the water is needed for all - the plants and myself.
“From 5am, the first couple of hours were lovely and cool so it gives you a chance to dash around.
But once the energy starts to drain from you, by mid-day that’s it, you’re finished.
“I can’t cut hedges when it’s really hot, so it was just a case of watering the plants, which takes hours
keeping everything alive. My water comes off the reservoir, the same with the greenkeepers, who
have done a great job with the course.
“Some rain towards the end of the month has been refreshing, it has settled the dust and sharpened
up the colours - it’s very welcome, but of course we need some more.
“We’ve just fitted a new pump on the swimming pool, so that’s back
open. The old pump (pictured right) was on for about 13 years - they
usually last between five and 10 years, so we did well.
“It’s just bad luck that it broke on one of the hottest days of the year,
but with the nice weather, the pool been very busy, which is good.”
