Tee time debate is the new Brexit at Wellingborough
THE hot topic this month is the removal of tee times. Their introduction, some 18 months ago, was to
comply with England Golf and Government guidelines to combat COVID-19 by preventing gatherings
and hence the spread of the virus. On that score they have worked well.
They have also taught us that a sensible gap between groups and no filtering in helps with the flow of
play. This is why the Committee recommend not teeing off before the group in front reach the green
(although this could also be achieved with the simple introduction of a light on a timer).
Wellingborough has always had a proud history of not having tee times. In fact it is what you would
expect from a premier golf club.
From personnel experience of 22 years, I have always enjoyed the fact I can turn up and play
whenever I feel like it. I’ve never had a problem getting a game during the week.
There are always spaces and as long as you check the website for societies and club matches you
will always get a game. In fact I have met and made some very good friends on the putting green over
the years. Nobody should have to book seven days in advance to get a game, or have we turned into
some other clubs in the county?
Weekends do tend to be rather busy, especially the mornings. My recent email seems to have been
totally misinterpreted. The roll ups DID NOT, DO NOT and WILL NOT have tee times booked. It
merely intended to let other members know rough timings when groups were aiming to turn up so
members can either go out before, after, in the middle of, or even join them.
They are all members too. If all those involved turned up they would still only fill approximately 30-
50% of the spaces (working on eight minute gaps). Could it be we simply have too many members
who want to play at weekends?
However, since the Captains Committee voted to remove them, I have received a small number of
emails from members expressing their surprise. There has obviously been a communication failure
for which I take full responsibility.
The anti-roll-up sentiment that seems to be around does concern me.
When did WGC become so anti roll-ups or a few friends (i.e. more
than four) getting together for a social game of golf?
It does seem that tee times could become the clubs’
‘Brexit’, and having spoken to other clubs there seems to
be a large variety of different solutions they are trying
which the Committee will monitor.
Before we go down that route, I would like to know if
you are for or against tee times or would you prefer
some hybrid system?
Please let me know by emailing me on
davehawkins215@hotmail.co.uk.
Do not email the office as David and Christine have
far too much to do than forward emails to me.

Frolicking good month for the ladies to relish
LADIES Captain Jenny Wilkinson said: “July has been a busy month in the ladies section. It started with
my Captain’s Day in early July. Although there were still COVID-19 restrictions in place, the weather was
kind to us, we played 18 holes followed by lunch in the Vaux Room.
“Prize giving had been planned to take place outside, but just as we had got the prize table sorted and
the PA system working, the heavens opened and everyone had to make a mad dash for the clubhouse.
Congratulations to all the prize winners. It was lovely to see so many ladies socialising together, it’s
been a long time.
“We’ve recently returned from the Lady Captain’s Holiday at Greetham Vallley, the weather was fantastic,
everyone enjoyed the golf courses, there was a great atmosphere, it was lovely seeing some of our new
lady members on the holiday. I think the handicap committee may have to sit; there were some great
scores.
“Chris Billson, in his position as course chairman, very kindly came along to a ‘question and answers’
session with the ladies earlier this month. Everyone found it really interesting and gave them a better
insight into the weekly work undertaken by the greenkeepers to keep our course in such good condition.
Thank you Chris, you coped very well.
“With the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions we were able to restart our regular Friday Frolickers roll up, it
was great getting back to some sort of normality, meeting at the putting green and throwing the balls up.
“I am holding a Charity Golf Day on Tuesday, August 24th - this will be open to all sections of the club
in aid of my charity Cransley Hospice. Booking will be opening soon on clubV1 and I hope to see many
of you playing in it.
“Finally on the Lady Captain’s Day, next year’s captain Sheena (Markham) announced that Miriam
Johnson will be her vice captain. A great choice, Sheena.”

Championship on his home

The two-handicapper carded five
birdies in a one-under-par gross
round of 71 to finish four strokes

Grimmitt was also part of the
winning gross team alongside
Wellingborough club-mates Roger

CAMERON Black (pictured left) produced the

Richardson serving notice of his potential by
taking third spot with 38.
Chelsey Sharp was the leading girl as her total of

Perfect Patrick wins Glazerite Trophy
PATRICK Ruff (The Belfry) was a model of consistency
in the 15th edition of the MPGA Glazerite Trophy as
he claimed the top prize with a 36-hole total of 137
at Wellingborough GC.
After posting a bogey-free 68 in the opening round
to lead by one stroke from four players, Ruff carded
three birdies and 15 pars in an afternoon 69 to secure a
one shot victory.
Beedles Lake’s Matthew Cort had to settle for a share of second
prize, alongside Andrew Jones (Redditch) and James Freeman
(Retford), after bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes meant he
finished just off the pace.
Wellingborough member, and former champion, Simon Lilly
carded just one bogey in rounds of 69 and 71 to claim a tie
for seventh, while club-mate Ryan Connolly was 49th on 153.
Fellow county professionals Harrison Woan, Luke Barney
(both Overstone Park) and Michael Campbell (Kettering)
finished 16th, 24th and 38th respectively. Ex-Premier League
footballer Peter Odemwingie carded scores of 82 and 80.
The Pro-Am event will take place at Wellingborough on Friday,
September 3rd.

Elite team move step closer to last 16 with away draw
WELLINGBOROUGH’S men recorded a
potentially decisive 2½-2½ draw at Northants
County in the new Elite Scratch League.
On one of the hottest days of the year, a fast start
proved key to the result as the home handicaps
were very low towards the back end of the
drawsheet.
Lead man Richard Brown put in a consistent
display to win the opening match 3&2 against ex-
Lion Nick Beal, who is always a tough competitor.
Mark Davis, pictured right, doubled the
Wellingborough advantage as he put in a no-fuss
display with a 2&1 win against Andy Castell.
Gary Grimmitt guaranteed the team at least
a share of the spoils as he tamed one of their
up-and-coming youngsters Oliver Pritchett by
securing a vital half with some solid golf, including
an excellent up-and-down on the 17th hole.
Stand-in skipper Adam Sherlock was unable to
contain the brilliance of plus-three handicapper
Josh Pritchett over the back nine as the home
teenager recorded a 3&2 victory.
Theo Brown battled hard against the ever-
consistent Tom Bullough before going down 5&4.
The draw means Wellingborough remain in a
strong position to reach the last 16 but still need to
rely on results elsewhere.

Rushden 6
at Northampton GC
A FIRST Intermediate League win this season
proved beyond the men’s team as they were
well beaten by a Rushden side, who had also
lost their previous two matches.
Defeats in the opening four games set the tone
for Wellingborough and although Dean Smith,
pictured left, and Paul Smith both secured points
on the 16th hole, they were the only successes
on another disappointing day.
To qualify for the semi-finals, the team will
almost certainly now need to win their remaining
two fixtures against Overstone Park and
Northampton.

NGL Ladies Cecil Leitch - Group B
Overstone Park 4
Wellingborough 1
WELLINGBOROUGH are through to the last eight despite losing
in their last away match in Group B at eventual table toppers
Overstone Park.
Needing to avoid a whitewash defeat to reach the quarters,
the visitors looked in trouble early on as Overstone won the
opening three matches with holes to spare.
But Wellingborough didn’t have to worry as Gill Rivers clinched
game four with a couple of holes to play to ensure the team
progress through to the knockout stages as runners-up.
The club will now face the unenviable task of taking on a
Rushden side, who topped Group D with six wins in six outings,
in the last eight at Delapre on Wednesday, August 11th.
If successful, the team could meet Overstone Park again in the
semi-finals as they play Northants County in their quarter-final.

WELLINGBOROUGH’s Ladies League team remain on track for
a perfect winning season after securing their third victory.
Although Amanda Rawson recorded a 5&4 win in the opening
game, Elton Furze levelled the scores with an equally convincing
victory in the next tie, meaning the result came down to the final
two games, which both reached the 18th green.
Not for the first time this season, Wellingborough displayed their
fighting spirit as Miriam Johnson clinched a one hole win, before
Lema Townsend sealed the team success by collecting a half.

The Harrowden Hall Experience... Bunkers
IN the second of a series of short features about how to provide the best golfing experience for
members and visitors to Harrowden Hall, Wellingborough Golf Club Magazine chatted with Club
Professional James Whittemore about the need to rake bunkers.
JAMES Whittemore on how to rake the sand: “The importance of raking a bunker is to make sure that
you don’t leave any footprints or marks. If the next ball goes into the bunker, it’s vital that it doesn’t go
into a bad lie that has been left by someone else’s footprint.
“There is a right and wrong way of raking bunkers, and also how you enter a bunker as well. So we ned
to look at where you move your feet when you are in the sand, and then how you would continue to rake
away the sand.
“Walking into the bunker from behind the ball is the correct way to enter the sand because if you go in
from the back or the edges, where the bank is steep, you could move a lot of the sand around with your
feet, which you don’t need to do.
“And you could also damage the edges of the sand, when you try and climb out because you can put
a lot of pressure.
“If you enter from the flattest point, at the back of the bunker or the entrance to the sand, you are not
really impacting the sand.
“If you struggle using the normal side of the rake, for whatever reason, just flip the rake over and use the
back of it to level the sand out, and make it nice and smooth.”

Full Set with... Lou Everard
IN the latest of a series of Q&A features with various members of the Club personnel this year,
Wellingborough Golf Club Magazine chatted with one of the most familiar faces at Harrowden Hall.
What is your full title?
Wellingborough Golf Club’s Dog Walker!
Family status?
I was married to Valerie, but she died nine
years ago.
What is your golf handicap?
29.
What is the lowest handicap you’ve had?
Five - in the mid-1980s.
My perfect fourball would be?
Fred Couples, Marilyn Monroe and Pete the chef - I’d need him to keep me alive!
What is the biggest title you have won at Wellingborough?
Alongside my brother, we won a club qualifier to play in a national knockout fourball event.
There were six rounds and we made it through to the final in Portugal. The unique part
was that the away team always started one hole up. I also won the Wellingborough Cup.
What is your best round of golf?
I played with Kevin Donaldson in a medal a few years ago - I shot net 68 and he shot net 65. I
congratulated him on winning it. But a few days later he told me he’d been disqualified for not
signing his card, and then told me that I’d actually won!
What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
Stop smoking, otherwise it will kill you. And it’s a good job I did because it would have done.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Apart from swearing… golf, I suppose. I’ve got a great life - I love this place and I love
coming up here. This is the best place in the world.
If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?
It wouldn’t make that much difference now - I’m retired and have the perfect life. But I
wouldn’t tell anyone, or at least not until I’d got to Heathrow and then I’d tell everyone!
If you could go anywhere right now, where would it be?
I’d love to go to California. I’ve never been there before - I might be discovered.
Best golf course you have played?
Wellingborough is a superb place. But one of the nicest courses I’ve played elsewhere was
King’s Lynn, while Ashridge is another lovely course.
What is the funniest thing you have seen on a golf course?
I saw a player with a brand new set of clubs take a swing at the ball, miss it completely and
smash his bag.
What would be your piece of advice to any Wellingborough member?
I’ve been associated with this place since I was 15, because my uncle lived here as the head
gardener, before it even became a golf club. So I would say, just appreciate it and enjoy it.
