I have been truly blessed with a fantastic team

SO yes, it has flown by, as all past Captains
will say. I am often asked if I have enjoyed my
Captain’s year but I have never come up with a
suitable answer.

My initial thoughts are always, ‘how can
you enjoy it when it is so time demanding
and difficult?’ and ‘if I am enjoying it, then
am I taking enough time in representing the
members interests?’.

An astute member noted half-way through the
year that I had a ‘good team’ around me.

He was, of course, referring to the Captain’s
Committee and was/is absolutely right in that
they have been first class.

However, the most important realisation you
get as Vice-captain and Captain is that the
‘good team’ around you includes all our staff,
volunteers and the Board; we are truly blessed
with a fantastic team.

It has been difficult to enjoy on a few occasions
especially when arbitrating on member disputes/
disciplinary matters or trying to strike the right
equitable balance, taking into account conflicting members preferences, but that goes with the job.

I have always tried to play a straight bat in reaching decisions or ‘not making a decision’ (sic) but
regretfully this has not always resulted in member satisfaction.

A significant aim of the WGC Captains is to demonstrate the charitable benevolence of our members
through funding support to a local charity; I am so proud of WGC again this year in this respect.

To those who have assisted in fund-raising, donated gifts, purchased auction items and have taken
part in the various charity functions, thank you.

Also, a massive thank you to the two major benefactors who have made sizeable donations but wish
to remain anonymous: I promise you I can keep a secret but the people I tell are not so good at it.

Although yet to be fully reconciled, we have collected over £10k for the Northamptonshire Domestic
Abuse Service, which I know will make a huge difference to them.

There have been two special ladies in my life this year, our Lady Captain, Sheena and my wife,Annette.

I could not have wished for a better Lady Captain than you Sheena, thank you for your support,
enthusiasm and drive throughout the year.

To Annette, neither of us truly and fully understood the time, dedication and costs involved but thank
you, as always.

Looking forward, I can’t wait to get back to supporting the Cobblers and hopefully Santa brings me
a half-season ticket, if they are not all ‘sold-out’ (lol). I predict, however, that come February I will
reflect and realise how much I did enjoy my Captain’s year after all.

Lastly, please give Captain Glyn all the support I have received, I wish you the best of luck my friend
and will do my bit to make sure you enjoy your Captain’s year.

Roy Pouncey,
2022 Wellingborough Golf Club Captain.

Whirlwind year when I’ve stayed out of trouble... somehow!

LADIES Captain Sheena Markham said: “Thanks for the memories. It seems an age since Roy, Olivia,
Graham and I were waiting for the shotgun for our Drive-In as Captains of our respective sections - I was
so pleased to get the ball over the wall, so thanks to Glyn Pepper for finding it in the base of the Yew tree.
“I apologise to all the folk I infected with covid at the lunch after! What a start to our year - even
Christmas had to be cancelled. The New Year was the real start of my Captaincy, and it has been a
whirlwind ever since.
“The ladies’ section has many new ladies all super golfers and all willing to represent our Club in the
various teams. We have enjoyed huge successes with our teams particularly our Friendly team who
were unbeaten. I’ve met many members I probably wouldn’t have and played lots of new courses too.
“My Charity ‘Dementia Sings Out’ received £8158.18 from monies raised throughout the year. Thank
you to those who made very generous donations anonymously and all who supported my charity events.
“There are numerous thank you’s I owe to many. Captain Roy for his support of me and the ladies’
section, my lovely committee for keeping me out of trouble, all the Ladies section, Claire, Lily, and their
team for supporting my madcap ideas. I wish Miriam a lovely year as Lady Captain - you’ll be fabulous!
“Thanks also to James for keeping the ladies well fed, especially on my big days. Mr Past President
Michael and Mr President for their support of the Cecil Leitch Ladies. Paul Sisman, Rod Gibbs, Garry
Bowe, and Mr President for getting the ladies out on time for my Big Days. David Waite for ensuring all
my dates were correctly entered on the diary, Dan, Ann-Marie and Amy for all their help.
“The Pimms and fabulous treat queens Emily and Pippa at the Kitchen Garden hut. David Clifford and
his team for helping the ladies through the handicap changes and generally just being there with a smile.
“A huge thank you to Steve Mackie and his team for accommodating changes
throughout the year with a smile and the cheery waves. (Well, I think they were
waving!) whilst out on the course. And to you all for the courtesy extended
to me. Thank you. Happy Golfing “

Wellingborough Witches win latest Club Quiz Night

CAPTAIN’S Committee member Andy Gallagher said: “The club
hosted a barn dance in October for the second year in a row.

“Thanks are due to Steve Mackie for making the machine barn
available and to Dave Hawkins and co for the enthusiasm and drive
to make the evening go so well.

“The band and caller were great and everyone learnt and performed
new dances. Watch out for this event again in the future.

“The October quiz, hosted by Dave Hawkins, was well supported
and closely contested, with the Wellingborough Witches coming out
on top. It was an interesting and varied set of questions including a
round on the recent Artemis (pictured) rocket non-launch.

“The next quiz will be hosted by John Collins on Friday, November
11th, team entries in the competitions room.

“There will be a comedy night at the club the following Friday
(November 18th) at 7.30pm, posters and details can be seen in
the clubhouse.

“You can expect different comedy stylings - saucy, but not blue. It’s
a bargain at £6 per head, so I look forward to seeing you there.”

It has been hard work, but a very enjoyable year

SENIORS Captain Graham Thompson said:
“After two years of disruption, Seniors’ golf finally
returned to something resembling normality this
year.

“We arranged all our usual annual board
competitions, including the Lonsdales, Veterans’
Challenge Cup, O’Neill Vase and the three
knockouts, plus our friendly with the Ladies.

“Our season of 28 matches against other club’s
seniors has been rather more successful this year,
although we do seem to have lost an unduly high
number of shots due to Wellingborough’s high
slope rating. Many thanks to all the Seniors who
played in our matches.

“A great deal of hard work has been undertaken
by the members of the Seniors’ Committee and I
am very grateful for their support and dedication
to the section.

“Peter Winder, our new secretary, has had the
unenviable task of learning the new systems and
juggling tee bookings in a busy Club calendar.

“At the same time, he had to organise next year’s
match schedule by liaising with 14 other golf clubs
- no easy task.

“Peter Davies, our team manager, has very
ably organised all our teams for the 28 matches
together with arranging the catering for our home
matches.

“He produces and publishes really excellent team
sheets and scorecards for every match and a
menu for the home matches.

“Our finances have been looked after by
David Birkett, our long serving treasurer. He
has arranged calculation and distribution of prizes for all our competitions and kept us solvent.

“Chris Dickens has continued to serve on both the Captain’s Committee and Competitions’
Committee. He has been steadfast in representing the Seniors’ Section and presenting our opinions
on matters which may affect all the Club’s Seniors.

“Our present Vice-Captain, Huw Rees, has been very active, organising competitions, including the
ladies’ game and stepping in for matches when I have been unavailable, also giving sound advice
over the year. I am sure that he will make a very able Captain and will bring much needed military
discipline to the section.

“I am also very grateful to Dan Hacker and Ann-Marie Pearson for their support and invaluable
assistance throughout the year.

“Finally, I have enjoyed the year as Captain and I am very grateful for all the support and
encouragement that I have received from Wellingborough Seniors. I wish Huw all the best when
he takes over as Seniors’ Captain at our A.G.M. and prize giving on Wednesday, November 16th.”

Riding with Kelly’s Heroes 13

WELLINGBOROUGH Golf Club member John Hewitt
organised and completed another charity bike ride
across two continents, in aid of We Mind and Kelly
Matters. Fellow members Charlie Higgins, Tim Veal,
Martyn Allis and Glyn Pepper also rode along, with
Ricky Sanders and Lawrence Berryman part of the
support crew. Hewitt chatted to Wellingborough Golf
Club Magazine about the experience.

Did the first ride across Europe go well?
Yes, everything went to plan - the European ride went
like a dream. In Europe, the roads were better and a
lot more bike friendly, and the scenario was stunning
throughout.
How much did that surprise you?
I’d been told how accommodating the roads were
for cyclists, but I was surprised how good they were.
It felt like they’d gone ahead of us and re-laid fresh
tarmac for each day! The European ride was more
picturesque, more interesting and safer - their B roads
were like carpets, there were no pot holes in Europe.
What was the weather like?
We went through a heat wave for the first few days - we
were cycling in 38 degrees heat, so we were having to
stop every five to 10 miles to get fresh water.
How helpful were the support crew?
The ride went smoothly, but the support crew had a
few issues - Bez and Rick picked up the nickname,
‘the Lost Boys’, because there were a few occasions
when they lost the GPS signal and would end up in
completely the wrong place - on one occasion they
went the wrong way, and were 30-40 miles away from
us on their way to Belgium! It was funny, rather than
serious, but the nickname stuck!

What were your thoughts going into the USA ride?

The day before the start, we went to Liberty State Park, which is directly
opposite Manhatten. With the big American flags fluttering in the wind,
it sent a chill down my spine - I just thought ‘wow, we’re in America and
we’re going to start cycling’. That kicked us off nicely as we left the
following morning.

Did the second ride meet your expectations?

I expected the US ride to have the stronger team, but it was the reverse.
The European team weren’t as strong collectively, but they pulled together
well. If someone had a bad day, they coped better.

Why was it so tough?

Early on, we went through Kansas, which is completely flat, it’s not
pretty and there was always a head wind or cross wind. I’d driven the
route, so I knew how tough it would be, but it surprised me how some
dealt with it. With 90 miles per day, it took us almost three days to get
through Kansas sapping your strength and morale - it was brutal. On
the flat, you are literally pedalling all the time. We had some people who
were really down when they got to the hotel at night. I assumed that
because they were strong riders, they would be strong mentally as well,
but it really got to them. And I wasn’t really prepared for that.

What was it like riding along the Loneliest Road?

In Colorado, the mountains just opened up with the desert plains it was
absolutely beautiful. When we hit Nevada, we reached the Loneliest
Road in America, where you have no perception of distance because
it’s just one straight long road going up into the mountains. It’s like going
upwards on an escalator and just not getting anywhere.

What did you think when you reached the end?

I was sad from a cycling perspective because I enjoy getting on the
bike. But there was relief that it was over because the organisation
took a lot out of me. It was a lot bigger and harder than I expected.
We had nearly 40 people across two rides, hotels every night and
restaurants every night over 30 odd days. But there was a lot
of pride for these 12 riders and the support crew, who are
responsible for our safety and welfare. At the end, when we
came over the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and
around by the sea, it was emotional for everyone. A massive
thank you to everyone.

USA Ride

Started September 24th
from New York and finished
on October 10th, which was
World Mental Health Day,
cycling over the Golden Gate
Bridge in San Francisco.
3343+ miles and 145,000
feet of climbing - three teams
cycling a simultaneous relay.
16 days of cycling (17 days in
total, with a rest day just over
half way). Cycling over seven
mountain ranges.

14 www.wellingboroughgolfclub.com

What did the ride teach you about mental health?

The perception was I could look at two riders and think they’re a strong rider, so would be mentally
strong, but someone who wasn’t as strong a rider wouldn’t be as strong mentally. But, in some cases, it
was the reverse. But that’s mental health.

What else did you and your fellow riders learn?

My daughter Amy and fiancé Colin were on the American ride. They are not usually very good
at getting up for breakfast, but I warned beforehand that they needed to do this on the road.
On one day, Colin was late for breakfast, didn’t fuel his body right, and after 20 miles his legs and eyes had
gone. So we had to nurse him through the next few miles to get him to our stop, so he could get some drink.
That incident summed up the trip for me because he was on the Loneliest Road. If he’d been there alone,
he wouldn’t have been able to make it but, with support, he was able to make it. That was an eye opener
for myself, the rest of the team and for Colin. We learnt some lessons that day, but it wasn’t the only time.
On another day, there was a rider who, on a particularly steep climb, the hill just broke him mentally, but
another stronger rider made a conscious decision to stay by his side and ensure he got to the top. There
was lots of examples of people doing that for others, which mirrors life.

How aware were you of the impact you were making?

It’s difficult to know what the impact has been, I don’t necessarily mean in terms of money raised, I’m
referring to awareness. But everything I’ve seen since I’ve come back is good. Even in the first ride in the
UK, it’s not easy to tell because you’re in your bubble on the ride, but it’s when you get back and people
come up to you and mention it, then you realise how much the word has spread. And obviously when
you’re in Europe, and particularly in America on a different time zone, it’s difficult to communicate with
people back home, but in terms of views of posts on social media it has gone really well.

How much money did you raise?

The fund raising kept building as we were going along. There is still money coming in, so I won’t know
the final total until the end of this year.

Even more opportunities for juniors to display their skills

HARROWDEN Hall provided the perfect setting for the
youngsters competing on The Shires Junior Golf Tour
this season as Wellingborough Golf Club hosted the
2022 Grand Final.

Fresh from winning the Northamptonshire Wonders Nine-
hole event at Delapre the previous month, Overstone
Park’s James Miller made a seem-less step up to
18-holes as he carded a magnificent tally of 51 points.

Edie Connolly (Collingtree Park) clinched the runners-
up spot in the Silver Division on countback from
Kingsthorpe’s Oscar Cooke with 41 as home club
members Isaac Richardson and Harry Costanzo (both
pictured right) finished outside the prizes.

Local knowledge off the back tees proved vital in
the Gold Division as Jack Meakin (pictured below),
who is a member at Wellingborough, bagged 31 to
edge one in front of Sam Thomas and Oliver Fitzgerald.

The Bronze Division, which is played over nine holes,
also witnessed a Northamptonshire winner as Connie
Stonestreet (Overstone) smashed 25 points to finish
seven clear of Eva-Grace Parsons (Northampton).

Jon delivers
NGL knockout
blow to Brown

JON Harris (pictured right) clinched the 2022 NGL
County Championship Men’s Knockout title for the
first time after beating Jack Brown (Brampton Heath)
on the 18th hole in the final on his home course at
Wellingborough GC.

The Club’s Scratch team player reached the knockout
stages of the tournament after finishing in ninth
position in the County Strokeplay Championship at
Collingtree Park GC in early June.

After thrashing Collingtree Park’s Trevor Twelftree 6&5 in
the opening round, Harris took the notable scalp of County
Champion Ryan Genner (Overstone Park) in the quarter-
finals with a 4&3 win, before beating Torin Little (Whittlebury
Park) 3&1 in the last four.

With Wellingborough hosting County Finals Day, 2022 Club
Champion James Northern was unable to make the most of local
knowledge as he finished 10th in the Champion of Champions
event.

Northern did receive some credit, however, for the success of
Charley Hull on the LPGATour last month after the Northamptonshire
professional, who has an association with Wellingborough, claimed
that her win in The Ascendant event in Texas was due to her close
friend.

Hull said: “I kind of knew a win was going to happen because a
strange thing happened. The last time I won on the LPGA in 2016,
my best friend James also won his Club Championship that year.

“When he won his second Club Championship (at Wellingborough)
this year, he said to me ‘this is your year, you’re going to win again!’.

“So hopefully he wins the Club Championships next year, so I can
win again on the LPGA Tour!”
