Effective communication and inclusivity will be key this year

THE Captain’s Drive-In was successful in so many
ways but also a real reminder of the risks present at
social gatherings.

Several of us, myself included, tested positive for
COVID within days of the Drive-In, thankfully our
symptoms were relatively mild and I have little doubt
that being ‘fully’ vaccinated contributed to my body and
mind well-being.

My thanks go to Glyn Pepper and Steve Hammond for
their support on the day and the generosity of members
who bought immunity from the Captains Charity bunker
and those who entered the traditional ‘how far will he
hit it?’ foreboding. Over £300 was raised on behalf of
Northamptonshire Domestic Abuse Services.

Unfortunately, a number of social events were
necessarily cancelled during December as a result of
our ‘balanced risk’ assessment, plus a combination of the Members concerns and lack of interest.

I appreciate we are not in ‘normal times’, but it would still be great to understand the kind of events that
Members would like to see organised. Our Social Committee remain enthused and committed so please
take the time to communicate your thoughts.

We have held a Men’s Captain’s Committee this month and I am pleased to advise of the following
appointments:
Vice-Captain: Glyn Pepper.
Competitions and Handicap Committee Chairman: Steve Hammond.
Social Chairman: Andrew Gallagher.
Junior Organiser: Nigel Grimmitt.
Golf and Charity Co-ordinator: Glen Gulla.

An important discussion point at the meeting was our expected dress code both on the course and within
the Clubhouse. There was an agreed perception that the standards had fallen but also recognition that the
current bye laws (see website) were ambiguous and need testing for relevance before implementation.

During my year as Captain, I am committed to improve effective communication, provide increased
transparency and promote greater inclusion.

In my two years as Vice-Captain I have learned just how hard effective communication is and I have
personally written emails to Members which have not been interpreted as intended.

The Committee is accountable to all Members and I will ensure all minutes of our meetings are available
on the Club’s website to provide transparency and assurance that Members’ concerns and desires are
appropriately considered.

Over the past few years in particular, we have really moved forward on inclusivity and I want to build on
this. WGC is ‘for all’ and we need to provide opportunity to play golf and enjoy all that is WGC.

It would be great to see new faces at the Club’s functions enjoying different events - to me, that would
be a sign that our inclusivity commitment is working.

Happy New Year to all Members, Staff and our families, please stay safe.

Wellingborough Golf Club Captain

Sisters take over Half Way Hut role from retiring Marshall

THE Half Way Hut on the back of the ninth hole will
be under new stewardship in the New Year after Ian
Marshall (pictured right) moved into retirement.

With some refurbishments taking place on the hut
towards the end of last month, Wellingborough Golf
Club Facilities Director Rod Gibbs believes the
membership have plenty to look forward to in the
months and years ahead.

He said: “Having reviewed and met with several
applicants, Emily Annis-Bond and her sister
Philippa Farrar, have been selected to take over
from Ian Marshall on January 1st, 2022.

“We are sure you will not be disappointed with their
offerings, so please support them as you have done
with Teena and Ian over the years.

“We would like to thank Ian for his great service and
wish him well for his retirement.”

And the winner is?... honestly, it wasn’t a fix!

LADIES Captain Sheena Markham said: “It’s fair to say it wasn’t the best start to the Captain’s year
for both Roy and myself - as we both got covid. And if that wasn’t enough, Santa (past Seniors
Captain, Chris Dickens) got it too!

“Inevitably, the Children’s Christmas Party, the Christmas Dinner and Dance, plus the New Year’s
Eve Bash all had to be cancelled.

“The good news however was that the Ladies Christmas Tea went ahead, with 32 ladies eating
together a fabulous meal prepared by James and served by Claire and her team. Thank you all for
making it so special.

“The draw for the Betty’s Christmas Treat Box was made by our past Ladies Captain Jen. And the
winning ticket was… Dave Hawkins… can you believe it?! It was witnessed by several ladies so no
cries of ‘FIX’ please.

“We raised £66.50 for the Dementia Sings Out Charity. Thank you to all who bought a ticket and the
kind person who put in the extra 50p.

“It’s lovely to see members supporting Dementia Sings Out, including Ruth Bowe and Mike Litchfield
(pictured) who kindly dressed up for the recent Christmas event.

“The Ladies section presented Ian Marshall with a collection to thank him for his work at the Half Way
Hut, and wished him a very happy retirement. We will hopefully see him out on the course a lot now.

“We wish you all a very healthy, happy New Year and lots of good golf!”

LET card is perfect response to ‘crushing’ setback

CLUB pro Meghan MacLaren had mixed emotions after securing her playing card on the
Ladies European Tour for 2022 by finishing tied fourth in Q School Final at La Manga, Spain.

Although the Wellingborough golfer was delighted to book her place on an expanded LET
for next year (full schedule next page), the result came on the back of disappointment the
previous week as she narrowly missing out in the LPGA Tour Q Series in the USA.

MacLaren posted on Twitter: “Don’t know yet what 2022 will bring but just want to say thank
you to everyone who has reached out, through the good and the bad.

“(LPGA) Q Series crushed me completely, that’s impossible to hide from. But proud of doing
what I needed to this week. I’ll have more at some point.”

After winning once on the Symetra Tour in the USA this year, MacLaren (pictured below) went
into LPGA Q Series in confident mood as she competed over eight rounds on two different
courses on the Alabama Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

MacLaren progressed through the opening stage at Magnolia Grove on a four-round total of
283, before making a steady start to the final event at Highland Oaks with scores of 71 and 74.

With the top 45 and ties gaining playing rights on the LPGA Tour next year, the Wellingborough
golfer made a sensational start to day three as she birdied
her opening two holes before bagging a hole-in-one two
holes later in a round of 70.

Sitting in a qualification spot going into the last
round, it quickly went wrong unfortunately as she
double bogeyed her first two holes on her way to a

closing 75 to miss out by three strokes.

MacLaren showed her mental strength a few days
later however as she overcame the disappointment,
and jetlag following her flight from the USA, to
produce an excellent display in LET Qualifying.

Despite not playing a practice round at the Murcian
venue, the two-time winner on the Ladies
European Tour bagged four consecutive
birdies on the front nine in an opening round
of 70 on the South course.

The 27-year-old carded five more birdies on
the North course in a three-under-par 68 on
day two to move into the lead - a position she
held with scores of 73 and 69.

With the top 20 players and ties gaining
full playing rights for next year, although
MacLaren was unable to find her very best

on the final day, a closing 76 was more
than enough to reach her target.

Former Solheim Cup player Becky
Brewerton, who is also attached to
Wellingborough, carded rounds of 68,

67 and 70 on the last three days to gain
a card on the LET for another season.

16 www.wellingboroughgolfclub.com

THE 2022 Ladies European Tour season is set to present
the greatest number of tournaments and prize money in
the organisation’s 44-year history.

Thanks to the support of new and long-term partners,
LET members will compete for a minimum of €24.5 million
across 31 events in 2022. The total annual purse is up
€4.5m on 2021 and offers €13m more than in 2019.

New year brings new look at Wellingborough

THE Club Office at Harrowden Hall will have a different feel and look in 2022 after a number of
personnel changes were confirmed just before Christmas.
After joining Wellingborough from Rushden Golf Club in 2005, David Waite (pictured below)
announced his decision to step down as General Manager and Director at the Board Meeting in early
December, with a view to retiring.
Club Chairman Ian Ferris said: “The Directors thanked David for his contribution to Wellingborough
Golf Club over the past 16 years and all of his efforts to take the club forward throughout that time.
“A lot has happened in that time and he has always dealt with matters in his usual unflappable,
professional and approachable manner.
“David will stay in post into the Spring of 2022 whilst the Board considers his replacement, and the
selection process is undertaken. I am sure all members will join in wishing David well in the future.”
For the first time in nine years, he will spend the remaining few weeks of his contract without his
long-time personal assistant Christine Kelly by his side after she took up a new position with a local
company in fine-detail engineering.
Everyone at Wellingborough wishes Christine the best of luck in her new role and thanks her for all
the hard work over the last decade.

Full Set with... Lily Houghton

IN the first of a series of Q&A features with various members of the Club personnel this year,
Wellingborough Golf Club Magazine chatted with one of the newest recruits at Harrowden Hall

What is your full title?
Bar Manager.at Wellingborough Golf Club.

Family status?
Daughter of greenkeeper Tom Houghton.

What do you think of Harrowden Hall?
It’s a beautiful place. It’s always been a part of my
life and I’ve always thought I’d like to work here.

What is your golf handicap?
I don’t play golf. I’ve grown up with golf and known
all about it. I should get into it really, because I
know how it works and can talk to people about
golf.

Best golf course you have been to?
My dad used to work at Kauri Cliffs in New Zealand, which was high up overlooking the
sea - that was beautiful. And here, this is not far behind.

My perfect fourball would be?
You need to have a laugh, so James Corden. My dad would have to be there too. We need
a pro so Rory McIlroy, and then someone who would have plenty to talk about, so David
Attenburgh - he would be interesting.

Have you ever been in the media?
I appeared in the local newspaper as a toddler playing golf at Pytchley.

What is the best part of your job?
Meeting new people every day. I love that - that’s why I love my job. Every day is different.

What is the worst part of your job?
The worst part is the beer delivery on a Friday morning because I’m only small and it’s hard
work dragging those barrels around.

If you could go anywhere right now, where would it be?
The Maldives.

What is the weirdest drink you’ve ever been asked to make?
I got asked to make a red wine spritzer, so red wine and soda water - that was weird.

If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?
I’d buy a big house and car, and splash the rest on whatever I wanted.

What is your favourite film?
The Holiday - it’s a Christmas film, but I could watch it all year round.

What is the funniest thing you have seen at work?
We had a wedding at Wellingborough when one of the guests fell head first onto the table
with the cake and all the drinks, which went everywhere. All the guests were in shock. I think
