Welcome to Junior Golf Magazine
JANUARY was a mixed month for juniors as the excitement
provided by the new Super Six Series on British Junior
Golf Tour was off-set by the sad news that the TGB Junior
Golf Tour has ended.
It’s a huge shame when generous people like Tom Blick
put so much time and effort into promoting golf to the next
generation, without receiving enough backing to make it
work in the long term.
Fortunately, his talents will not go to waste as he continues to run the academy at
Abbey Hill Golf Centre. Keep up the excellent work, Tom.
If anyone had good reason to walk away from junior golf many years ago then
BJGT Director Steve Adams was that person, and no-one would have blamed him
either. But his stubborn belief in junior golf is now beginning to bear fruit as the
Tour continues to go from strength-to-strength.
We, at England Junior Golf, are proud to back the British Junior Golf Tour and
look forward to following the boys and girls competing in the Super Six and the
other competitions over this year and beyond.
Talking about new things, what do you think of our new logos?
After receiving half a dozen entries to our Design the Logo Competition, the
leading two efforts came from 13-year-old Adam O’Brien, from Peterborough
Milton Golf Club. Well done Adam, congratulations on winning a PAR+ golf outfit.
Watch out for more competitions and great prizes throughout the year. We hope
you enjoy the February Magazine.

More to come on British Junior Golf Tour
INTEREST in the British Junior Golf Tour has hit
new heights as the inaugural Super Six Series
sold out within a few weeks of being announced.
The early-season competitions at The Bedford,
Cambridge Meridian, Park Hill, Wellingborough,
Bourn and Tadmarton Heath attracted boys and
girls of all ages from across the region.
With places also filling up for the special events
at Collingtree Park and Nailcote Hall in June,
the British Junior Golf Tour are set to announce
a collection of new dates for competitions in late
spring and the summer.
Tour Director, Steve Adams, said: “The Super
Six Series has proved very popular, with waiting
lists in place at all the competitions.
“But we don’t want any youngsters to miss out, so we are in the process of booking
more venues to hold events throughout the rest of the season.
“Several of the courses we are lining up are some of the best in the country. So
keep your eye on the British Junior Golf Tour website www.juniorgolftour.co.uk.”

Course Review - Park Hill
STARTING with a testing tee shot and a difficult
approach over a brook, this Leicestershire course is the
perfect venue for the British Junior Golf Tour’s World
Championship qualifiers on March 26th.
Whilst this quality layout will bring the best out of the
best, holding a scorecard together over the front nine is
vital because the birdies tend to come on the inward run.
On a par 73 measuring over 7000 yards from the back
tees, the leaderboard could change dramatically since
two of the par fives are at the conclusion of the round.
Water comes into play on both 17 and 18, particularly on
the last, when anything pushed or pulled could end up
wet, so the champion will need to earn their victory.
The most unique hole is undoubtedly the par four 15th as anyone brave enough to
drive the green will face a putting surface that is shaped like a bowl!
With the youngest age group playing on the par three course, the key is club
selection because the target areas are small, with most of the danger past the pin.
But once on the greens on this pretty course, the players will be treated to some
of the best putting surfaces around. Good luck, and may the best boy and girl win.

Course review - Wellingborough
HARROWDEN Hall is one of those places you will
want to come back to time and time again as the
18th century mansion in Northamptonshire hosts
the fourth Super Six Series event on British Junior
Golf Tour on Monday, April 10th.
Despite only having a couple of par threes and
two par fives, there is nothing boring about this
woodland course as each hole offers a different
challenge.
The outward half probably has the greater variety
as a player faces uphill and downhill par fours,
doglegs in both directions, plus a lovely par three
over water.
Some undulating par fours and fives make the
back nine a test of stamina as well as the game.
And it all comes to a conclusion with a card killer of an 18th hole - a tricky short
par four with a two-tiered green and a pond (pictured) ready to collect anything left.
Then it’s back to the magnificent clubhouse for a bite to eat, a soft drink and a
chance to reflect on a great day on a great course, making it a great experience.

Meet the man who beat... The Man!
YOUNG golfers are being given a
wonderful opportunity to play in a
competition organised by the last
man to beat Rory McIlroy in a Tour
event.
English professional Graeme
Storm, who defeated McIlroy in
a play-off to lift the South Africa
Open (pictured right), is running
a Junior Open over his home
course at Hartlepool Golf Club on
Saturday, April 8th.
The event, which is in association
with Dyke House College, costs
just £10 for 18 holes and is open
to boy and girl golfers aged
between seven and 18 years old.
With all proceeds going to the Finlay
Cooper Memorial Fund, which is a
charity set up by ex-Middlesbrough
footballer Colin Cooper, who lost
his son in 2002, Storm hopes it
will be a special day.
He said: “Last year we wanted to hold the event on the same weekend as the US
Masters, because that is the traditional start to the golf season, and we are doing
the same this year.
“We will still have the same age categories - seven to 10 year olds over nine holes,
11 to 14 and 15 to 18 year olds, both over 18 holes.
“But we are changing the format slightly so that there will be gross and net prizes on
offer for boys and girls in the older two age groups, and there are handicap limits.
“Dyke House is a school I have been associated with for a few years, working
as a mentor with eight talented children - a couple of whom are already England
internationals.”

Thanks for the memories
ABBEY Hill Golf Centre was the venue for the last
event of TGB Junior Golf Tour as young golfers from
across the region gave event founder Tom Blick the
perfect send off.
Home club member Demi Maxey won the Academy
net prize by one from Wexham Park’s Billy Wood,
who carded the best gross score by two from
George Smith (Redbourn).
In the Elite competition, Windmill Hill’s Zac Nash
had his own little battle with two members of the
same family.
The teenager won the gross category ahead of
Manato Nakatani (Hendon) but had to settle for
second in the net section as younger sister Haruhi
Nakatani came out on top.
The successful players in the 2016 Order of
Merits collected their prizes after the event as
Huw Pearson (Buckingham) and Oliver Kelloway
(Woburn) secured the Elite and Academy plaudits.
Although Blick will not be continuing the TGB Tour
into a third season, the Abbey Hill professional will
remain in junior golf as he helps run the Academy
at the Milton Keynes club.

County training aimed at all standards
In the second of a series of Q&A features with people that are shaping the
way junior golf is run, Junior Golf Magazine chatted with a leading golf
coach given the responsibilty of training the next generation of county
golfers. This is Cambridgeshire and Suffolk golf trainer, Ben Kerr…
What is the objective of the county junior training
development?
County training varies from one county to the next.
Each county will have their own visions for what
county training is and what it should achieve. The
general objective is to find and train golfers to play
for their county. However, some counties will lean
more towards elite development, some will focus on
recruitment and giving everyone an opportunity.
What age group or ability is the county training
aimed at?
There are various programmes around the country. Some are based on age group
coaching, these may start from around Under-10’s or Under-12’s, through to
adult squads. Other programmes may be more based on ability and inclusion, for
example in Cambridgeshire we have the Break 100, Break 90 and Break 80 Groups
(pictured next page), where the juniors are grouped on their ability rather than age.
When does the coaching take place and how often?
Most junior county training is at weekends throughout the winter. The frequency
and duration of the training sessions will depend on how the county golf union
funds their junior training programme. There will normally be a training session
every four to six weeks. As county coaches, we advise and hope that the juniors
are working more regularly with their own PGA golf coach on a one-to-one basis.
Where do the training sessions happen; on the range, on course or in a
classroom?
There isn’t a specific location. The coaches will use the environment they think
is best suited to the coaching objectives of the session. I try to use a golf course
setting as often as I can, because I feel my role as a county coach is to help the
juniors play better golf and shoot lower scores. Watching them play is essential to
helping them manage their way around the golf course and play better golf.
18 Junior Golf Magazine
Is the training throughout the various counties the same?
Training does vary from county to county. The reasons for this can be:
- Funding.
- Access to facilities.
- Objectives for junior golf set out by the county union (elite development,
recruitment and inclusion or a mixture of both).
- Group sizes.
However at the heart of every junior county training programme is the wish to
provide opportunities for junior golfers to enjoy the game, make new friends and
improve their skills.
Why have county training?
County training provides a safe coaching environment for the juniors to get together
with their friends from other golf clubs. They can socialise as well as learn.
The training sessions help the county golf union stay in touch with the juniors they
have playing golf in their county. This makes it easier to then select their best
squads and teams for inter county matches at the various age groups.
From my point of view, county training and county matches help to expose the
juniors to the level of golf they need to aspire to if they want to play at an elite level
in the future. It can be far too easy for juniors to stay at their home clubs and listen
to all the praise and accolades they receive from the other members, and begin to
think they are world beaters. Getting juniors involved with the next level up, can
inspire them to work hard and learn.

Westwood vs Westwood vs Clarke
THE friendly rivalry between Lee Westwood and Darren Clarke isn’t only on
display when the two Ryder Cup stalwarts take to the golf course - it is also
evident in their Golf Schools.
This was never more apparent than on a two-week trip to Spain in January as
Westwood’s Essex and Cheshire Academies went head-to-head with Clarke’s
School in team and individual events at the Iberostar Royal Andalus.
Competing on the courses at the magnificent Cadiz venue, the DCGS had
to take a back seat in the Triangular Series of matches as the team lost both
games, meaning the two Westwood Schools met in a Final.
The contest turned into a one-sided affair however, as the Essex outfit thrashed
their northern counterparts by the emphatic scoreline of 18-3.
Unsurprisingly, several Essex players took their best form into the three-day
individual competition as Ryan Craig bagged the gross honours by two from
Cheshire’s Conor White with scores of 72, 74 and 76 in windy conditions.
Although Liam McNeela (pictured) and Harry Phillipou were two of the
nine Essex students to finish in the top 13 in the net
category, they had to settle for joint-second.
DCGC student Brian Elliott grabbed the first
prize as he fired brilliant net rounds of 69,
63 and 76 to finish 11 shots clear.
