Big dates are getting closer as we approach full return
IT has been great to be back. The main thrust over the next seven weeks will be to return the club
back to as ‘normal’ operation as possible.
May 17th is Boris’s next big date for changes which should see us all allowed in the clubhouse, just
in time for the warmer weather when everyone will want to sit outside!
The really big date will be June 21st which should see the removal of all the COVID restrictions that
have been placed on the club. Back to putting with the flag out, raking the bunkers and of course
tee times.
April’s BBQ went well and was well attended - albeit the weather wasn’t the best. The junior weekly
coaching, meanwhile, is going really well and the numbers are on the up. Well done Ryan (Connolly)
- keep up the good work.
With regard to upcoming competitions, the Captain/
Pro Challenge is now open for bookings - there
is a sheet in the pro-shop with some dates
available.
We have the Challenge the Captains event,
which is a mixed competition run along the
same lines as Captain/Pro Challenge. There
is a sheet on the notice board next to the
changing rooms, which is also filling up nicely.
The Early Bird is a team event with a 5.30am
shotgun start, finishing with a full English
breakfast - this is now booked in for the
end of June.
For all those new members
who have joined in the last
two years, we also have the
(appropriately named) New
Members Competition on
Sunday, June 13th.
And not to forget, the
barn dance is planned
for August.
Meanwhile, on the
home front, our
very own garden
archaeological dig
site has been filled
in and turfed.
It now looks
like the perfect
practice chipping
area. Happy days!

Course is open for all members in smooth return
THE partial lifting of coronavirus lockdown restrictions and
transition back into playing golf has gone as smoothly as
could be expected, according to Wellingborough Golf Club
General Manager David Waite.
Although there was an initial surge in bookings immediately
after the re-start on March 29th, the members have not
been adversely affected by course overcrowding over the
subsequent few weeks.
Waite said: “The resumption of golf has gone really well
- it has gone smoothly. We have not been as busy with
bookings on the course as we might have anticipated,
which is good because it means everyone’s had the
opportunity to play golf.
“Compared to the first lockdown last year, I think there are a lot more people back at work than there
were then. It has been cold at times, and it has also been fourballs, which has taken some of the
pressure off.
“It has been a happy medium between people having the opportunity to play golf, without the course
being overcrowded. The feedback from the membership has been positive because the course and
greens are looking great.
“We resumed out competitions on the week commencing April 19th, which went well, so we’re now just
trying to get back into the normal flow.”

Tee shots and tea service - things are looking up!
LADIES Captain Jenny Wilkinson said: “The golf season is well and truly under way now; we held
our first ladies competition of 2021 last month, followed by afternoon tea on a sunny terrace, no need
for patio heaters and no wind.
“All the ladies seemed to be delighted to see each other again after three months of lockdown. I think
they really also liked the fact someone else had made the food and they were being served.
“We have our first exchange day of the year this month at Rothley Park (pictured below), and we’re
very much looking forward to having a day out at a different course.
“We’ve also got our Ladies/Seniors competition coming up later this month followed by a BBQ -
weather permitting, of course.
“The Ladies Scratch and Intermediate League competitions have been amalgamated into a single
Combined League this year.
“The format is four players in a team, the first player competing off scratch and the other three ladies
playing off their handicaps. It will be played at a neutral course, with the team having their opening
match in early May.
“The Cecil Leitch squad have started their training under the expertise of David Clifford and James
Whittemore. Their first match is later on this month against Overstone Park.
“Congratulations to Steve Mackie and his greenkeeping team who have now completed the exchange
of sand in all the bunkers, this has all been done manually and has been quite back breaking.
“It is great to see so many people back on the golf course and the course really does look great,
although, dare I say it, some rain may be helpful.
“It is lovely to see many of you enjoying a drink on the terrace, although we could do with a bit more
sun and less wind.
“We’re all hoping that the Clubhouse will be able to reopen on May 17th, especially if this cold
weather continues - it will be the next step on the way to some sort of normality.”

Club set to reach significant membership milestone
JUNIOR membership numbers are expected to pass the half century mark in the coming weeks as
more boys and girls continue to sign up to Wellingborough Golf Club.
With coaching, competitions and a junior team in place for the 2021 season, Junior Organiser Nigel
Grimmitt believes the annual membership rate of just £75 for the year is proving to be incredibly
popular amongst the younger generation.
He said: “With the membership fee at such a low rate, we have attracted almost 50 junior members,
which is around three times as many as two years ago.
“So we have done really well to pick those members up, but there is still so much more to do,
including organising a Junior Order of Merit for the competitions in 2021.
“With COVID restrictions over the last 12 months, there was no ideal opportunity to plan ahead,
apart from some nine-hole events.
“Unfortunately the Junior Club Championships didn’t go to plan last year, which was a shame
for everyone involved. But this year we are keen to run an exciting Championship, which will
include an 18-hole competition for the lower
handicappers and a Rabbits Cup event for the
high-handicappers.
“But we intend to track the results of the various
junior competitions in 2021 to organise an Order
of Merit - the exact details will be finalised in the
coming weeks.
Junior Coach Ryan Connolly (pictured) added:
“Junior golf is hugely important at Wellingborough
- it’s a great place to be and was massive in my
development.
“I can remember growing up here as a young
golfer. I could spend all day here, getting exercise
with my friends.
“Tiger (Adams), James (Whittemore), Meghan
(MacLaren), Ryan (Evans) and myself all came up
through the junior section here to go on to become
professionals.
“I tell the parents how great value-for-money it is.
It’s an absolute bargain!
“It was interesting to see how well the juniors got
on with the first competition last month. I went out
to watch them play because it gave me a better
idea about what they need to work on.
“The day before the competition, I left the coaching
quite open and got them to work on whatever they
felt they were struggling with.
“But now I’ve seen them in action, we can look at
actual golf scenarios and work on what I think they
should be doing in those situations - rather than
just hitting golf balls for the sake of it.
“We can work on how they can apply what they do
in practice to an actual round of golf.”
Wellingborough Golf Club Magazine 9
More opportunities for youngsters to learn the game
JUNIOR coaching has been expanded at Wellingborough with an extra hourly group session being
added to the Saturday morning schedule from May onwards.
Under the guidance of Club Assistant Professional Ryan Connolly, the programme has proved
incredibly popular throughout the opening weeks of the season with boys and girls of all ages and
abilities enjoying the sessions.
Connolly, who is approaching the end of his first year of PGA qualification, says the response from
players and parents to the coaching during the last few months has all been positive.
He said: “One-hour junior coaching takes place on Saturday mornings. I’ve now moved it from two
to three groups so it now starts from 9am up to noon. If it keeps growing hopefully we will be up to
four groups.
“When I was doing it in November and December we had about 18 players, and now on average
we’re getting about 22 or 23 boys and girls. But if every player was available then it was around 30.
“For the last two weeks it was getting a bit too hectic
- I wasn’t spending enough time with each golfer.
“I would get three quarters of the way through the
session, and then have to rush through the last 10
minutes, which I didn’t really like.
“By spreading it to three groups means I can spend
more time with each player - the parents understand
the reasons for the change, and have been very
supportive of the move.
“It’s a massive positive because the kids are
obviously enjoying it, and then telling friends and
family to come along. That’s the feedback I’m getting.
“The time slots are loosely based around age and
current ability, but we are flexible with this because
there are younger players who may be a slightly
better standard, experience or confidence levels,
and vice versa.
“This means I can change what we do in the sessions,
for example for the older or better players, I can
test them in different ways to the less experienced
golfers. It’s a case of starting with the basic skills and
then getting them to play a few more games as they
get more confident.
“Even in the short period of time, we’ve been working
together, I’ve seen the improvement.
“A lot of it is confidence because some of them have
come from never playing golf before, and are now
entering competitions for the first time, like Josh
Morris (pictured).
“There are four-weekly sessions for just £20, but
anyone wanting to join can come along at any
stage, and pay on a pro-rata basis. Just contact
me in the Pro Shop or email ryan.connolly@

Team places up for grabs in 2021 Junior League
WELLINGBOROUGH have been drawn to play reigning
UK champions Peterborough Milton, and Overstone Park,
in the group stages of the 2021 NGL Junior League.
With the tournament being cancelled last year following
the coronavirus pandemic, the county delayed announcing
the 2021 schedule until after the latest lockdown
restrictions were lifted.
In contrast to many clubs, who have not entered a
team this year, Wellingborough were keen to give their
flourishing junior section an opportunity to represent the
club and are hoping to put together a strong squad for the
coming campaign.
Junior Organiser Nigel Grimmitt explained: “We have
already confirmed our fixtures with Peterborough Milton
as we travel to their course on Sunday, July 18th, and then
host them on Wednesday, August 18th.
“The dates for the home and away matches against
Overstone Park will be confirmed shortly.
“Two years ago we struggled in the Junior League, but
we have a significantly stronger
group of players this time
and are hoping to
challenge for a
semi-final place.
“The coaching is going so well and there are a lot of players
who we have not really seen play, so I will work closely with
junior coach Ryan Connolly to select the team.
“But with the likes of Junior Captain Luca Brown, Ashleigh
Critchley, Sam Underwood (pictured above), Olivia Barby and
Ewan Clee (pictured left) in our junior section, we have plenty
of quality young golfers around.
“We are aiming for a more consistent team, which is why will be
using our junior club competitions to assess the best players to
choose.
“Those boys and girls who are playing well in our junior events will
be rewarded by being given the opportunity to represent
the club.”

Greenkeepers ‘bust a gut’ to finish bunkers on time
WELLINGBOROUGH Golf Club Head Greenkeeper Steve Mackie said: “The Bunker Project is now
completed. A lot of hard work has gone into this - the lads have done a fantastic job.
“We started towards the back end of last year. We were going to get some contractors in to do 10 or 15
bunkers, and we were going to do the rest at the bottom end of the course, which is the wettest part,
so that we didn’t have to take any machines down there.
“The longer things went on with the lockdown the more we got done, so the lads decided at the half
way stage that we should finish it all ourselves. And fair play to the lads, they have bust a gut to do that.
“With every bunker, sand had to be shovelled out by hand, onto a loader or top dresser - any sand left
over was stockpiled to be used at a later date on tees and approaches. The new sand has been tipped
into the bunkers - the best part of 500 tonnes of sand has been moved.
“From our side of things, the bunkers are better and the sand doesn’t move as much. But the test will
be when we get rakes in the bunkers and the members have to use them.
“Overall, we are happy with the course development. There has been more frost in the mornings than I
can ever remember - there has not really been a day when it’s not been frosty. It has delayed us a little
bit, but it means that the grass hasn’t grown as much, so we have just got on with other jobs.
“It’s been very dry, which is not ideal especially when it’s cold because nothing grows then, but it’s
something we have needed to cope with - the myth of April being a month of showers has gone!
“But from where we were in January and February, when it was very wet, to now - we are really happy
with the state of the course. The plan is for constant improvements over the coming weeks months
and years. We just want to get better - set a benchmark and improve on that every year.”

Project Joe offers more exposure for Club pros
JAMES Whittemore has become the latest Wellingborough
Golf Club professional to start working with a national golf
magazine after joining up with Golf Monthly.
With Meghan MacLaren and Charley Hull offering their
golfing insights in Today’s Golfer Magazine already this
year, Whittemore made it a unique hat-trick for the Club
when he was approached to work on a piece called
Project Joe.
Whittemore explained: “Golf Monthly are following a guy
who has never really played golf before, and seeing if he
could break 100 in just six months of starting the game.
“So this ‘Joe’ has limited experience - perhaps one and a
half rounds of golf in his life. He’s 29 years old, he’s got
a younger family, so it’s a case of how much golf can he
play, and can he break 100 by the end of the summer?
“My role, as the coach, is to track his progress and see
how he can develop. It will appear in three separate issues
- the start of the process, in the middle, and at the end of
the six months.
“We went to Girton Golf Club, with a photographer, Golf
Monthly and ‘Joe’. Cobra and Puma are sponsoring the
piece, so they did a fitting with him at Hemmingford Abbots
- initially he had a bag of rubbish clubs!
“I followed him for a couple of holes and watched him try to play. He was obviously very nervous, and
hit his first tee shot about three feet!
“I then did a live lesson on the range afterwards, which was filmed, and then he has access to all my
on-line coaching portals, which we have been doing together ever since.
“It was a really good experience and good fun. Now we just have to see if he can break that 100.”

THE social calendar at Wellingborough
Golf Club this year is beginning to take

are now in the diary.

The odd bar of chocolate.

Disappear… with the wife!
What are the best and worst parts of your job?
