SEPT 2021
A good year, after all!

Eagle has landed on memorable Captain’s Away Trip
LAST month started with my Captain’s Away Weekend with two days at The Abbey at Redditch, with
the Sunday being a short drive away at The Warwickshire.
My round started with a small crowd to watch the captain drive off and one of my playing partners
saying ‘I played here three weeks ago - ditch, bunkers on the left, trees on the right, looks familiar’.
After hitting, what I would describe as a ‘perfect drive’ in front of an audience I found my GPS saying
I still had 345 yards to go to the green. Hmmm… turns out the 10th is very similar to the first!
By far the highlight of the weekend for me was an eagle two on the 14th hole on the Sunday which
secured a second place finish for the weekend.
The overall winner was Tim Coleman who proved his consistency over the three rounds to take the
honours. Congratulations to Tim and a big thank you to all who attended.
Party in the Garden (PITG) started as though it was going to be a Glastonbury-style event but
thankfully the rain relented before the bands started and a good evening was had by all.
Last month, I invited members to write to me regarding tee times. Thanks to everybody for your
comments - the responses were varied and interesting with some valid points being raised.
Hence, to bring this to a conclusion, there will be a vote before the AGM to decide the issue once and
for all. Details of which will be released shortly.
Unfortunately, the Covid legacy continues with next month’s calendar having to shoehorn in a lot of
events. Captain’s Day will be on September 4th, followed by the Family Fun Day on Sunday.
The run continues with the Captain’s Charity Day on Friday 10th and Presidents Day the following
day. I appreciate most people can’t do all, but it would be nice to see as many as possible.

Charity Day raises money for Cransley Hospice
LADIES Captain Jenny Wilkinson said: “The
weeks are flying by; I can’t believe we’re
almost in September now.
“Since the last magazine article, we have
played the Ladies Club Championship.
“Carol Gibbs won the gross title again
(pictured right) so congratulations to her and
also to Miriam Johnson for winning the silver
division.
“Well done to Sue Kellett who clinched the
bronze division and Sarah Chudley who
picked up the Wells Cup for the higher
handicap ladies.
“The Combined Ladies team continue with
their unbeaten record, but the Cecil Leitch
team lost to Rushden in their quarter final
match played at Delapre - there’s always next
year, I suppose!.
“Thanks to everyone who came to support
the team including the President and Club
Captain.
“Massive congratulations to Di Dickinson who
won the Goodyear Challenge Cup.
“The cup was first presented in 1897
and is open to any lady golf members
in Northamptonshire, Warwickshire or
Leicestershire.
“It is held on a three-yearly cycle around the
three counties. This year it was played at
Northampton Golf Club, where Di won with a
net 70 - really well done, Di.
“Thank you to everyone who played in my
Charity Golf Day in aid of Cransley Hospice.
“It was lovely to see all sections of the club
represented - seniors, men, ladies, mixed and
juniors all playing.
“A big thanks to those of you who donated prizes,
and those who were unable to play and gave
me a donation instead. Sheena (Markham)
did a fantastic job with her mystery box.
“The winning ticket belonged to Liam
Chowdry. It looks like we have raised about
£2,500, a really good effort.
“September is looking equally busy with
Captain’s Day, Captain’s Charity Day,
President’s Day and the Ladies Autumn
Meeting.”

Juniors enjoy busy summer of golf at Harrowden Hall
YOUNG golfers at the club enjoyed a hectic few weeks as Wellingborough held a variety of junior
competitions throughout the summer.
The Junior Club Championship was claimed by Olivia Barby as she carded a gross score of 94 to win
by a single shot from current Junior Captain Luca Brown. Harris Chacksfield’s excellent round of net
67 clinched the net category by eight strokes.
Runner-up Ewan Clee, who has represented the club’s team in the NGL Junior League this season,
capped a fine year by winning the Waples Plate and then clinching the first prize in the Monday Night
Junior Golf Order of Merit a few weeks later.
One of the most popular competitions on the club calendar took place towards the end of August as
the juniors combined with the adults to take part in the annual Ryder Cup match.
In another close contest, USA skipper Barby collected the winners’ trophy on behalf of the team
(pictured below) from General Manager David Waite after they came out on top by the scoreline 3-2.
Junior organiser Nigel Grimmitt commented: “Well played to everyone. It was an excellent competition
thoroughly enjoyed by all.
“Thank you to both the Ladies and Men’s Captains for their support, the men, lady and junior golfers
who took part, and also the supporters and parents for attending.
“Junior competitions over 18 holes are scheduled for Sunday, September 5th and September 19th,
and also on October 3rd, while there will be some 12-hole competitions over the October half term
break. So there’s plenty more to look forward to in the coming weeks.”

Dickinson secures county competition win with strong finish
DIANE Dickinson held off the challenge of Oggie Wentworth (Elton Furze) in the NGL Ladies
Goodyear Cup as she triumphed on countback at Northampton GC.
In a competition featuring 56 ladies from Northamptonshire, Leicestershire and Warwickshire, the
Wellingborough member’s better finish proved crucial as she edged out Wentworth after both came
in with the joint-leading score of net 70.
Darren Wilkins and William Wilkins came close to making it a double success for club members in
county competitions as they finished runner-up on their home course in the NGL Stableford Cup.
The two Wilkins were at their consistent best in the afternoon betterball round in particular as they
went on to finish with a tally of 87 points - just two adrift of winners Peter Bellamy and Steven Nicholls
(Peterborough Milton), who birdied the closing hole to seal top spot.
Wellingborough club-mates Glen Harris and Andy Sanders
won the Greensomes morning prize with 43 points.

UNBEATEN Wellingborough remain top of the standings despite seeing their run of three
consecutive wins come to an end as they were held to a draw by Peterborough Milton.
A 7&5 success from Ashleigh Critchley (pictured) in the opening game gave Wellingborough the
perfect start, but defeats in the next two ties meant they needed a win from the final tie to grab a
share of the spoils.
Fortunately they were able to rely on the resilience of Gill
Snelson as she held her nerve down the 18th hole to secure
the team a draw.
Wellingborough’s remaining match against Overstone Park,
who have won both their games this year, looks set to be
the title decider, but it remains to be seen whether that
fixture will take place as all matches need to be played by

WELLINGBOROUGH’S youngsters picked

Wellingborough were given an early boast

displayed their quality by taking the opening two

“After the change around, the Rolling Clones put on possibly
one of the best shows we have ever had, their interaction
with the audience was brilliant.

stage, both guitarists playing off stage with the audience
on the dancefloor, having photos taken, and a play list that

Charley set for fifth Solheim Cup appearance
WELLINGBOROUGH professional Charley Hull is expected to play
a lead role in Europe’s attempt to retain the Solheim Cup as the
defending champions take on USA at Inverness Club in Ohio from
September 4th-6th.
The leading county golfer, who qualified for the team through her
world ranking, has a magnificent record in the biennial event after
becoming the youngest golfer to compete in the match in 2013.
After picking up two points out of three as a 17-year-old on debut
in Europe’s only victory on US soil, Hull has lost just twice in 12
pairs and singles ties since - and was unbeaten as Europe staged
a remarkable comeback win at Gleneagles two years ago.
With Hull never having lost a foursomes game, European captain
Catriona Matthew could be tempted to partner the Kettering-born
golfer with in-form Georgia Hall or fellow English pro Mel Reid on
the first morning.

The Harrowden Hall Experience... Shouting ‘Fore’
IN the third of a series of short features about how to provide the best golfing experience for members
and visitors to Harrowden Hall, Wellingborough Golf Club Magazine chatted with Club Professional
James Whittemore about the need to warn people about wayward shots on the golf course.
JAMES Whittemore on safety on the golf course: “The importance of shouting fore is obviously huge -
it’s for the safety of everyone on the golf course. A golf ball travelling at speed is not going to tickle - it’s
going to hurt!
“Therefore, we can’t stress enough the importance of shouting fore when you do miss your shot, in one
direction or the other.
“How you shout fore is another story. If I hit a shot and it goes way right, but I just shout fore, it doesn’t
give an indication of where the ball is going for those people it is heading towards - it could be going
left or right. If you hit it right, shout ‘fore right’, and also make it clear by pointing with your arm - it gives
people the chance to take cover.
“It’s also important to stress that it’s not just other golfers, it’s anyone on the golf course - whether it’s
green staff, maintenance, whoever it might be, we need to be mindful that people are a hazard.
“Just because you see a greenkeeper cutting a fairway, you can’t just think ‘oh, I’ll hit’. Don’t do that.
They are at just as much at risk as anyone else on the golf course.
“So, wait for them to be out of sight or out of the way, and if it does go towards them give them a shout.”

An Old Course victory... Made in Chelsey!
WELLINGBOROUGH junior member Chelsey Sharp (pictured) won the biggest title of her short
career as she lifted the Strathtyrum Salver with victory in the St Andrews Junior Ladies Final at the

Sharp carded a gross round of 78 on the Strathtyrum Course to qualifying for the knockout stages of

and then got the better of Zara Macdonald 4&2 in the last four.
After finishing runner-up in both the Northamptonshire Ladies and Girls Championships earlier this
year, the teenager showed her determination not to miss out again in the final as she completed a
