Volunteers continue to enhance our reputation

THE season has finally started and we have been
blessed with some glorious weather these past two
weeks.

I am delighted that the Course Committee have
authorised the use of two-seat buggies.

Without these, some of our members - both Ladies
and Men - are denied the opportunity to play the
game we all love.

The fairways have benefitted from the mandated
use of mats during the winter and the Captains
Committee appreciate the support all members
have given this mandate.

That said, I am sure that I am not alone in missing
the mats when in the rough during the March
Medal competition.

The whole weekend provided a real golf challenge,
one which I lost, but there were some admirable
scores recorded.

The lowest rounds on the Saturday were Lee
Smith (gross 77) and Andrew Welsh (net 70),
while Edward Billson shot a gross 79 and Colin
Armstrong carded a net 70 the following day.

Meanwhile, Edward’s father, and our immediate
past President, Michael didn’t fair quite as well in his round, but he refused to NR. Well done, Michael.

On the subject of NR, can all members please remember that under WHS rules if you do NR on a
hole, for whatever reason, you are still required to record your scores against all the other holes.

Similarly, when submitting scores for handicap purposes on General Play rounds, you MUST register
the intent before playing the round and ideally, submit your score before leaving the premises.

The Handicap Committee receive a report of all players who infringe this rule and will look to remove
scores if deemed appropriate.

The Committee fully encourages all members to submit General Play scores remembering that with
handicap records focusing on your last 20 scores, and the best eight differentials being averaged out
for your WHS index, it’s clear that the more scores you can submit the more accurate your handicap
will be.

One of the privileges of being Captain is that of witnessing the extraordinary efforts of our volunteer
members. Take, for example, the Men’s Senior Open which we hosted on Thursday, March 24th.

Michael Litchfield and Paul Sisman both provided Course Marshalling and Tee-starter support. Pat
Wilson, Pauline Kendall and Jane Sisman gave up their entire day to organise, record and administer
the event and further ensured a sizeable donation to this year’s Ladies Charity, Dementia Sings Out.

Not only would these events be impossible without the willing support of all our volunteers, the
renowned reputation Wellingborough Golf Club enjoys is further enhanced. Thank you all.

Roy Pouncey,
Wellingborough Golf Club Captain.

The softer you sing, the louder you’re heard

LADIES Captain Sheena Markham said:
“The Charity Lunch held at Wellingborough
Golf Club on Friday, March 25th was a great
success.
“Everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather, the
drinks on the Harrowden Hall terrace and an
excellent meal (photos on next page).
“To top it all, we had a fabulous presentation
by Judith Chapman (pictured right) ably
assisted by Ruth Bowe - thank you to both for
the flowers on the tables and the informative
and fun presentation.
“Thanks also to Miriam for the endless
changes to the table plan and keeping me
sane, Liz Rees for organising the raffle and
the financials, James for a wonderful lunch,
and to Claire and her team for the excellent
service.
“But the biggest THANK YOU is for everyone
who attended, donated prizes, and made
donations, you all made the event successful.
“I am truly delighted to announce we made
just over £1,500 for Dementia Sings Out!
“This is a very worthy, and much needed,
charity in the community.”

A Jungle-themed Children’s Christmas Party... at Easter!

CLUB Social Committee member Paul Sisman
said: “The March quiz night was a well-
supported event, hosted by Nigel Grimmett.

“In a close contest, Hash and Bina Shah’s team
came out on top.

“A further quiz night is planned for Wednesday,
April 20th when John Collins is the quiz master.

“The Children’s Christmas Party, which was
postponed in December, is being replaced by
an Easter event on Sunday, April 10th. It will
have a jungle theme and no Santa.

“Ticket holders for the original event have been
notified and no additional tickets are available.

“Planning for Party in the Garden on Saturday,
July 16th is ongoing. Two bands have now been
booked with our lead act bringing a two-tone
theme to the event.

“More details will be forthcoming in the next
edition of the Wellingborough Golf Club

Teams start NGL League campaigns on home turf

LOCAL knowledge will hopefully prove crucial
for Wellingborough’s men as they begin their
Hollingsworth Trophy campaign with a Group B
home clash against Northampton on Sunday, April
3rd.

The 2016 and 2018 champions face away games
at Priors Hall on Saturday, April 16th and Kettering
at the start of next month, before completing
their fixtures by hosting 2021 winners Northants
County on Sunday, May 15th.

Priors Hall, Kettering and County have also been
drawn in the same group as Wellingborough in
the Handicap League, but it’s the other side that
the men face in their opening Group B fixture
as Peterborough Milton visit Harrowden Hall on
Thursday, April 21st.

It’s a similar story for Wellingborough’s youngsters
as the side led by Junior Captain Olivia Barby
(pictured left) host Milton B in their opening Junior
League match on Sunday, April 17th.

Defending champions Overstone Park A, who
they play home and away later in the season, are
the other team in Group B.

Can the ladies teams win more county titles in 2022?

WELLINGBOROUGH begin the defence of their
Ladies League title on Sunday, April 24th when
they face Elton Furze at Rushden GC (pictured
right).

The winners of the inaugural championship
last year host a round of fixtures in mid-June,
before returning to action with matches against
Peterborough Milton, Northampton, Overstone
and Northants County over the next four months.

With two sides entered into the 2022 Ladies Cecil
Leitch League, Wellingborough’s A team have
home advantage for their first match against
Northampton on Friday, April 9th. Rushden and
Kettering are the other teams in Group B.

The Club’s B team need to wait until Thursday,
May 5th before starting their campaign as they
host Elton Furze in Group A.

With Daventry unable to field a team this
season, Whittlebury Park provide the only other
opposition in 2022.

Waite to retire is almost over for our David

DAVID Waite is set to complete his last full month as General Manager at Wellingborough Golf Club
as he prepares to leave Harrowden Hall on Friday, May 13th. The Club’s longest serving GM chatted
with Wellingborough Golf Club Magazine about the last 16 years, as well as discussing what the
future holds for him.

How did you become General Manager at Wellingborough Golf Club?

I was at Delapre for a total of 15 years - first as Trainee Assistant Professional and then 10 years
as a Duty Manager, and then three years at Rushden as Secretary/Manager before coming to
Wellingborough. I started on March 1st, 2006.
What did you want to do when you first arrived?

My main thoughts were to move the Golf Club into the 21st century, and that’s no criticism, my
predecessor Roy Tomlin did a great job during the 15 years he was at Wellingborough. But when
you join a club, it’s a new regime, so I was keen to improve the quality of the experience here, and
update the facilities.
What has made you most proud?

I was the first Managing Director at Wellingborough Golf Club - they’ve never had one before, and I’d
never taken on such a role, so that makes me feel proud. When they did the restructuring in 2008,
they decided they wanted to give me more self-autonomy on making decisions and running the
Company. It was a massive vote of confidence from the Board at the time to let me have that position.
I’ve also been the longest serving Manager at Wellingborough, for 16 years and a bit, and I think Roy
was the previous longest at 15 years. The average length of a Golf Manager is seven or eight years,
so that shows how settled the Golf Club has become.

Wellingborough Golf Club Magazine 11

What were the biggest projects you worked on during
your 16 years at the Club?
One of the biggest projects was the internal
refurbishment of the building (initial sketches below),
which we did over the winter of 2011/2012 - that
was a massive project to extend the bar and put
new furniture in the clubhouse. We also refurbished
the Vaux Room and President’s Room, making
them more neutral so that they can be dressed to
reflect the nature of the event being held in there.
As far as the golf course is concerned, we had the
bunker refurbishment project, and we had the new
main storage shed for all the course machinery, and
the extension to the buggie storage.
Were there any projects that were less noticable, but
just as important?
We’ve continued to improve the IT structure. Many
members won’t be aware, but previously we had
separate systems so there was a lot of duplication.
So that needed to work a lot better.
How much involvement did you have in the sale of the Wolsey Angels (pictured above)?
I was first approached about the possible significance of the Wolsey Angels, and that set the ball
rolling. So I was involved in that process, but not to a massive degree - I can’t really take any of the
credit for that.
What impact did their sale have on the Golf Club?
When I first joined the Club, people were hanging their coats off the Angels at the time, so
their discovery made a huge difference. The extra finance basically facilitated the three major
refurbishment projects - the Clubhouse Bar, the Bunkers and the Greenkeeper’s Sheds.
The sale of the Wolsey Angels was a significant part of those projects going ahead.
How has Wellingborough Golf Club changed?
The Golf Club is in a completely different position than it was 16 years ago. We’ve got a full
membership, and a waiting list of 60 people, and it doesn’t have any debts to anyone, so financially
Wellingborough Golf Club is in a great place. There has also been a gradual shift in the culture of
the Golf Club, which happens in every Club. So some of the old guard has moved on and been
replaced by different people, with different ideas, and it’s probably now more all-encompassing.
Clubs should never stand still and should always be evolving - Wellingborough Golf Club has done
that, which I think is good.

12 www.wellingboroughgolfclub.com

How do you think the Club will evolve with the new General Manager?

There is going to be a period of change, as you would expect. Initially, there will be what I call ‘some
lower hanging fruit’ which can be addressed quite quickly, but any bigger changes will take longer
because it will need to go through sub-groups and then the Board, or the sub-committees and then
the Captain’s Committee - that can take some time.
How long did it take you to get settled into the role?

It will take several months for any new Manager and his assistant to get settled in, and get their feet
under the table - that was the case when I started. There were some things I could make changes
quickly, structural changes took a lot longer. You have to get people on board and they might have
to vote on it. If it’s something large, it might need to go to an AGM and need ratification - this can
take a while.
Why did you decide to leave?

There is only so much energy you can put into a job like this, and I think, after 16 years, I’d reached
the point where I’d taken my role at the Club as far as I could. This is a lovely place to work but when
you are spinning so many plates at the same time, it can get tiring. There’s no one reason, I just felt
it was in the best interests of myself and the Golf Club to instigate a change.
What are you going to do now?

I’m going to play more golf. I play the piano as well. I like to walk my dogs. I’m just looking forward to
relaxing more - I’m going on holiday to America. I’ve got two grandchildren, who are the light of my
life, so it will be nice to spend some more time with them.
What is your message to the Golf Club members and staff?

I’d just like to thank everyone for their support over the years. The Members, Directors and Officers
of the Club have always been very friendly over the years, and it is appreciated. There have been
many staff changes in recent years - you are only ever as good as the team around you, and I’ve
been lucky to have some great teams. Thank you.

Tiger is aiming to roar on Tour in South Africa

WELLINGBOROUGH pro Tiger Adams (pictured) will fly out to South Africa early this month
as he aims to secure a place on the Sunshine Tour for the 2022 season.
The 22-year-old battled his way through the first Qualifying School in mid-January at
Maccauvlei GC when he finished five shots inside the cut as the top ranked English golfer.
Adams said: “I travelled out to South Africa on New Year’s Day this year, so I could give
myself time to adjust to the different climate and grass changes.
“I played the Q-School Warm Up on the IGT Tour at State Mines GC and posted rounds of 76,
73 and 69 for a tied-18th finish.
“A few days later, I had Sunshine Tour First Stage Q-School. The tournament was shortened
to 54 holes due the bad weather meaning the cancellation of the third round, when I spent the
12 hour delay laying on bar stools! I eventually carded rounds of 71, 74 and 69 to finish tied
14th on two-under-par.

“I fly back out at the start of April, when I will play a few warm up events on
the Bushveld and IGT Tours, before playing the Final Stage of Sunshine
Tour Q-School.
“This takes place over 72 holes at Heron Banks Golf and River Estate at
the end of the month, when I hope to pick up one of
the 25 cards up for grabs.”

County Centenary Final comes to Wellingborough

WELLINGBOROUGH golf course will have the honour of hosting one of two
special NGL finals this summer to mark the centenary of county golf being
played in Northamptonshire.
The County governing body confirmed in its AGM last month that
Harrowden Hall would be the venue for four category finals as golfers
from all clubs in the county have the opportunity to qualify for the
prestigious event.
The NGL explained: “To celebrate this important year, each Golf Club
will be invited to allocate one medal on their own course as a qualifying
competition before the end of July 2022.
“The winners of the following seven sections will be eligible to represent the Golf Club later this
season in the Centenary Medal Final, when they will all receive a prize:
“Men (Handicap Index divisions 9.4 and below, 9.5-18.4, and 18.5 and above), Ladies (Handicap
Index divisions - 20.4 and below, 20.5-28.4, and 28.5 and above) and Junior medal (boys and girls).
“The Centenary Medal Final for the Men with Handicap Index 9.4 and below, Men with Handicap Index
9.5-18.4, Ladies with Handicap Index 20.4 and below, and Juniors, will take place at Wellingborough
Golf Club on August 28th.
“The other final for Men with Handicap Index 18.5 and above, Ladies with Handicap Index 20.5-28.4
and Ladies with Handicap Index 28.5 and above is schedule for Peterborough Milton Golf Club on
September 11th.”
Wellingborough will confirm in the coming weeks which club event/s will be used as qualifiers for the
Final. If the club winner is not available to play in the Final a replacement player can be allocated.

Raring to go for start of golf season

HEAD Greenkeeper Steve Mackie sad: “Over the last two
months, we have continued to tidy up the course.
“It’s been very wet at times, so that has limited what we can
do. We’ve had a lot of rain, so it’s meant we couldn’t get some
machinery out there.
“The lads have needed to walk out onto the course to try and
get the work done, and make as little mess as possible.
“The weather has been better over the last couple of weeks,
when we did a major overseeding of the greens.
“We have started mowing things properly now, so it’s just
a case of refining areas and putting some definition to the
course. We are trying to make constant improvements.
“The last storm we had was nothing compared to what we
had in November, so we were lucky in that regard.
“Everyone has done a fantastic job, and is now raring to go
for the start of the golf season. We will try and cram all the
jobs in and get the course ready - everything is positive!”

Wellingborough Golf Club Magazine 19

Full Set with... Roy Pouncey

IN the latest of a series of Q&A features with the Harrowden Hall personnel, Wellingborough Golf
Club Magazine chatted with the man in charge of taking the club forward over the next 12 months.

What is your full title?
Club Captain at Wellingborough Golf Club.

Why did you join Wellingborough?
I am a Wellingborough man. Once you experience the
golf club you fall in love with it. We are so fortunate to
have this in Wellingborough.

What is your golf handicap?
Just gone down to 13.9, thanks to Steve Hammond :)

What did you want to be when you were a child?
I’m embarrassed to say a Man Utd footballer. Luckily, I
was not good enough.

My perfect fourball would be?
It would have to include Kate Middleton for restoring
pride in the Royal Family, Boris Johnson for delivering
Brexit (not forgiven for ‘party-gate’ though) and Blair
O’Neal because it was my choice and I love golf ;)

What would you change about yourself?
My age, bank balance, handicap index, car and roman nose.

What has been the best advice you have ever been given?
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.

What do you do in your spare time?
Whatever Annette tells me to do, and with love.

What is your guilty pleasure?
Watching Craig Evans hit a poor shot. It doesn’t happen often enough though.

If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?
Buy the Cobblers and take a load of friends on a golf trip of a lifetime.

What are the best and worst parts of being Club Captain?
Never having a dull moment and not being able to watch the Cobblers as much as I want to.
Wait... have I got the answers the right way around?!

What is your favourite TV show or film?
Best film is either Life of Brian or Pulp Fiction. Best TV show is Peaky Blinders.

What has been the highlight of your golfing career so far?
Wow, there are so many, let me think... winning the Murray Strang Trophy (note to self: we
need to bring the winners board out of the snooker room) and of course, being Captain at
the best Golf Club in the County.

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a golf course?
Walking from the 12th green to the 13th tee when a wasp flew up Chris Reading’s trouser
leg. After several stings and a lot of wailing, he quickly took off his trousers. I think all his
playing partners are still haunted by the memory.
