Get ready for great ‘club-life’ throughout off-season
IF I was not colour blind I would
probably look forward to autumn and
winter golf more than I do.
But, for me, it just suggests four to
five months of cold miserable weather
where the attraction of golf declines,
but it is much better than the shopping
or D.I.Y. alternatives.
That said, I absolutely love the Sunday
morning shotgun starts, the buzz in
the Clubhouse before and after golf
and the increase in ‘club-life’ as Dan
Hacker so accurately describes it. To
those who have never participated in
it, you are most welcome to join us all
for the first event on November 13th.
Heading into the winter season, the reduced playing time availability (dark after 4pm) means that it is
essential that we have an efficient and effective tee-booking system on our busiest periods.
Please cancel any bookings you have made as soon as you become aware that you cannot play and
do not make ‘ghost’ bookings to prevent others from joining you.
Also, do not be afraid of putting your name down with people you do not know but welcome the
chance of new friendships and networking.
The Captains Committee recognise our role in maximising tee availability and will merge bookings
where less than three players are booked in during peak times.
The irrigation awareness meeting will take place on November 9th at 7pm and this is your chance to
understand the issues, timelines and options available; more importantly to influence the decisions
we need to make for the longer-term benefit of our Club and its membership. Please find the time
to attend.
Although numbers have yet to be finalised we are aware that a number of people will not be renewing
their membership this year for a variety of reasons.
Fortunately we have a healthy waiting list and we will look to fill this void by inviting new members.
There is a balance here that the Committee and the Board have to take as we would all love an
‘empty’ golf course but not at any price.
Historically, we have set the membership level at circa 500 full seven-day male membership as this
has proven to be the right balance. Looking at the people at the top of our waiting list we will also
benefit from reducing the average age profile with all the advantages that brings.
The George Cup remains one of our most important board competitions and I have to congratulate
Marcus Hooper on his fantastic achievement on winning over 36 holes. I note that, as a result, his
handicap is now lower that his dad’s (Matthew), which must have brought an even greater smile to
Marcus’ face. I’m not sure how big a smile will be there mind you, once Steve Hammond does our
annual handicap review though (lol).
Lastly, my congratulations go to our Ladies Teams’ successes this year including the Annodata Cup
Challenge Team, who are still in the competition. A trip to Spain in March 2023 sounds great and I
look forward to my invite (surely?), good luck to you all.
Roy Pouncey,
Wellingborough Golf Club Captain.

I’ve been having huge amounts of fun this year
LADIES Captain Sheena Markham said: “Wow! They did it again… Wellingborough’s Ladies
Annodata team are still in the competition.
“Pictured (below) are the winning team after they defeated The Royal Cromer Golf Club on September
18th. The match was all square until Ashley (Critchley) came in - winning on the 17th hole.
“Our next match is away at Brampton Park in Huntingdon on Wednesday, October 12th. Well done
ladies on getting through to the sixth round and in the final 16 teams.
“The ladies are Suzanne Wright, Gill Snelson, Miriam Johnson, Kirsty Critchley and Claire Guest.
Good luck - I’m sure you will have a lot of support on the day.
“Commiserations to our Cecil Leitch Team Black of Claire, Ellen, Sue K, Bina, Lema and Carole who
lost by a putt on the 18th hole in the Final to the reigning champions Staverton Park - it was so close
(further match details are included later in this publication).
“Well done to all who played throughout the competition. A special thank you to the supporters and
caddies. Getting to the Final after 10 years and beating strong teams was a fabulous achievement.
Watch out Staverton we will be back next year.
“My final big day The Autumn meeting was played in relatively lovely weather only the last teams in
the afternoon were caught in a shower.
“I have been a very lucky with the weather. It feels strange not having to plan for any more future
events.
“My year is nearly over and in case you hadn’t noticed I’ve been having huge amounts of fun. I’m
very much looking forward to playing in the Coales Cup on Sunday. Good luck to all who have
entered. Happy Golfing.”

Can Wellingborough trio benefit from home advantage?
JON Harris, James Northern and Carol Gibbs will be hoping to make the
most of local knowledge when they compete in NGL Knockout Finals Day
on their home course at Wellingborough GC on Sunday, October 2nd.
Harris will be playing over 36 holes in the NGL County Matchplay Final
as he takes on three-times County Men’s Strokeplay champion Jack
Brown (Brampton Heath).
After qualifying for the Matchplay stages by finishing ninth in the 2022
County Strokeplay Championship at Collingtree Park in early June,
Harris had few problems defeating Trevor Twelftree (Collingtree) in
his opening match by the scoreline 6&5.
The Wellingborough Scratch team member backed that up with an
excellent 4&3 victory against 2022 County champion Ryan Genner
(Overstone) in the last eight, before beating County first team player
Torin Little (Whittlebury) 3&1 in the semi-finals.
Northern (pitured left) and Gibbs will be playing over 18 holes in
the Men’s and Ladies Club Champion of Champions tournaments
after winning their respective Wellingborough titles earlier this year.
Fourteen other golfers, including County team players Jensen
Parfitt (Collingtree Park), Mark Bazeley (Northampton) and Jordan
Darnell (Kettering), will be competing against Northern in the men’s
competition.
Gibbs will be one of the favourites for the County Ladies title as she
hopes to use all her experience in a field that includes teenagers Eloise Feely (Northants County)
and Amy Nunn (Overstone Park).
The day also sees the Betterball KO Final and Foursomes KO final, plus the Seniors Team KO
Final, which pits Overstone Park against Farthingstone, who will be closing later this year.
Wellingborough will also be represented in a County Final the previous day as Steve Bason, Adam
Clifton and James Sweeney attempt to win the Izzard Team Trophy at Cold Ashby GC.

Ladies League skipper Gill Snelson (pictured right, with Johnson)
finish third on countback in the gross category with a round of 83.
In the NGL Ladies Bouverie Bowl earlier in the month,
Wellingborough member Chelsey Sharp grabbed the plaudits
as the teenager carded an excellent winning score of net 70 at
Northants County GC.
Claire Lindsay and Carol Gibbs both shot a gross round of 83 to
finish fourth and fifth respectively in the gross category.
Gibbs’ husband Rod also narrowly missed out on a podium spot 24
hours earlier in the NGL Seniors Pairs Open as he finished fourth
at Brampton Heath GC.
In combination with club-mate Kevin Steel, the Wellingborough Director posted a total of 40 points.
At the opposite end of the age scale, Jack Meakin (pictured below) also had to be content with fourth
place in the net category of the NGL Junior Order of Merit Final at Kettering GC.
In a field that included club-mate Cameron Black, the Wellingborough junior posted a round of net
69. Olivia Barby and Eleanor Hamilton finished sixth and eighth respectively in the girls gross event.
Helen Marriott and Linda Simpson, meanwhile, both played well in the second NGL Centenary Medal
Final as they grabbed third and fourth positions in their respective ladies handicap categories at
Peterborough Milton GC.

A splash of colour as special guests arrive from Hawaii
HARROWDEN Hall witnessed an unusual
sight last month as a coach load of guests
from Hawaii descended on the home of
Wellingborough Golf Club.
With Past President Michael Billson,
current Club Captain Roy Pouncey and
ex Captain George Khaw welcoming
the visitors by giving out traditional
Hawaii Lei garlands, the club were
treated to singing and dancing on the
lawns.
Front Of House Manager Claire Irving
explained: “We were honoured to welcome the group of visitors from
Hawaii last month. They came to visit us at Harrowden Hall to see where Princess Ka’uilani (pictured
above), a member of their royal family, was educated during her stay in England.
“The Hall was a boarding school in the 19th century and Princess Ka’uilani was here in 1892. Our
guests performed several wonderful dances for Princess Ka’uilani during their visit.
“Our sincere thanks to Michael Bilson for attending, offering his fountain of knowledge giving a
wonderful account of Harrowden Hall. Also here to welcome them were Captain Roy Pouncey and
past Captain George Khaw.
“Michael read a poem, written for the Princess by Robert Louis Stevenson, to the visitors before they
proceeded into the gardens to perform (pictures on next page). They enjoyed their first experience
of afternoon tea before leaving us.”

MacLaren rediscovers best form on Ladies European Tour
MEGHAN MacLaren narrowly missed out on her second victory of the season on the Ladies European
Tour as she lost a play-off to Ines Laklalech in the Lacoste Ladies Open de France in Deauville.
The Wellingborough pro, who triumphed in the Australian Women’s Classic in late April, carded
scores of 65, 67 and 67 to finish tied with Laklalech - three strokes clear of the rest of the field.
Unfortunately MacLaren found trouble off the tee on the first play-off hole and, after taking a penalty
drop, was only able to make six, meaning her opponent’s bogey five was enough to claim the title.
MacLaren, who has struggled for results in recent weeks after making some swing changes, said:
“Those are the fine margins that we win or lose by and it’s a golf tournament, so it happened to me.
“Ines is a great player. We played together at Q School and she’s gritty and not going to go away.
She deserves it today.
“Scores of 65, 67 and 67 were not quite enough, but it was a special French Open. There are different
types of lows in this game, but I’ll take this one over the past few weeks. Thanks for the support.”
The 28-year-old (pictured below) backed up her return to form the following week as she recorded a
top 20 finish against a strong field in the KPMG Women’s Irish Open at Dromoland Castle.
MacLaren shot 70 and 72 to make the cut, posted a bogey-free 68 on day three, before finishing with
a 70 to grab a share of 19th place, alongside Becky Brewerton, who is also attached to Wellingborough.
With three tournaments remaining in the 2022 LET schedule before the end-of-season finale at the
Costa Del Sol Open in late November, MacLaren has moved up to sixth in the rankings.

Lilly secures Midland Order of Merit with course best
SIMON Lilly capped a memorable season by clinching the 2022 PGA Midland
Order of Merit title after carding a course record second round 61 at Sapey Golf
& Country Club whilst finishing third in the Midland Professional Championship.
The Wellingborough pro’s consistency throughout the year proved vital as he
topped the standings with 885 points, thanks to two runners-up finishes and a
tied fourth place in this year’s qualifying events.
Lilly said: “I’m delighted to win the Order of Merit. There are some great players
in the Midland region so to win the Order of Merit is a great achievement.
“Although I won, I didn’t win one of the Order of Merit events, which was
disappointing, so next year to win an Order of Merit event would be nice, but
as long as I stay fit I will keep playing.”
The result came off the back of making his debut appearance in the PGA
Cup a few days earlier as he represented GB and Ireland against the USA at Foxhills GC in Surrey.
In a biennial team contest between the Professional Golfers’ Associations of Great Britain and Ireland
(PGA) and America (PGA of America), unfortunately the tournament didn’t go the team’s way as Lilly lost
all three matches in a 15½-10½ defeat.
Despite leading by one hole at the turn in the fourballs on the opening day, Lilly and partner Matt Cort
lost 2&1 as USA took a three point advantage into the second day.
Alongside new fourballs partner Paul McKechnie the following morning, Lilly was defeated 5&4, before
also being beaten on day three in the last singles match, by which time the visitors had already retained
the Llandudno International Trophy.
Lilly (pictured front row, far left) tweeted: “What an incredible experience @thepga cup. Thanks
@ThePGA for everything you did for us. To captain @DJRussellgolf and his son Chris for leading the team.
Thanks @FoxhillsSurrey for the superb job in hosting us for the week. Thank you team GB & Ireland.”
