Covid’s Invisible Touch was a blessing for Captain

PART of the legacy of coronavirus has been to shoehorn a lot of events into the back end of this year.
So, September has been a busy month starting with my Captain’s Day. As is tradition with this day,
a few alterations were made to the course, including playing a par 3 to the eighth practice green, and
a few tweaks to the rules, like mulligans, throw out of the bunker and joker holes.
The usual liquid refreshments at the halfway house seemed to go down well and some interesting
scores came in. Bad luck Alan - 10 points on one hole and still didn’t win! Hmmm. The evening
entertainment was in the marquee with The Smarties - a local band, who are well worth seeing.
The following Sunday was the Family Fun Day. Thankfully good weather allowed the event to get into
full flow with the mini-Olympics, treasure hunt, face painting and nest box building being the main
events of the afternoon. Even some of the grandparents went home with a nest box under their arm.
Quickly following on was my Captain’s Charity Day, unfortunately not fully booked but still well
attended. Despite this, we still managed to raise just short of £5K, largely due to a very generous
donation. Also, I managed to shoot a PB around Wellingborough - a not-too-shabby 78!
Squeezing in a quiz night, and then a trip to Italy for the Moto GP kept up the momentum of the
month.
Whilst in Italy, I received the news that my older brother Neil had contracted COVID-19 and being
the caring brother I am, I texted him back to see what he was doing with his Genesis tickets…
Phil Collins was great btw!
Neil is making a good recovery and had his hip operation date rescheduled. He’ll soon be on the road
to playing golf now he has joined the rest of us pensioners.
Finishing the month off we had a vote on tee times. I don’t think I need to comment on this subject
any more but await the consensus of opinion.

All legal votes are cast in successful Club e-poll

THE last week in September 2021 was one of the most significant in Wellingborough Golf Club’s
history as the members used a new voting method to decide whether a Tee-Time Booking System
should be introduced on a permanent basis.

Following the coronavirus outbreak in spring last year and the subsequent lockdown restrictions
imposed on the Club over the following few months, temporary Tee-Time Booking Systems were
needed at Harrowden Hall to cope with the enforced changes.

Although the easing of restrictions has meant tee times have not been used this summer, the Captain’s
Committee felt this was the ideal opportunity to canvas the opinions of the full playing membership on
whether they should be re-introduced.

With coronavirus a continuing presence in our society, it was felt that the safest and easiest way to
conduct this poll was via email, when all relevant members would be given the chance to answer
Yes or No to the following question:

Do you wish to see a Tee-Time Booking System
introduced at Wellingborough Golf Club?

A similar e-voting system was implemented for
board nominations in Wellingborough Golf Club’s
first ever virtual AGM towards the end of last year.

Although it was not required on that occasion
because all the roles were automatically filled, the
Club were satisfied that the process, which went
through a vigorous testing procedure, would have
worked smoothly.

So it was re-introduced for the tee time booking
system vote last month in the full knowledge
that members may experience some teething
problems.

The email was distributed on Monday, September
27th for all eligible members to vote once, with a
closing date of Friday, October 1st.

As anticipated there were no major issues with
the system as a huge majority of the members
successfully received the email and voted
correctly.

There were some members, who accidentally
voted more than once, but the process was set
up to easily identify and delete the surplus votes,
so those members have been reassured that their
inadvertent errors did not affect the final total.

With coronavirus a potentially ongoing issue,
similar decisions may need to be made via email,
online or virtually at Wellingborough Golf Club in
the future, so the success of the Tee-Time Booking
System vote is a massive bonus to everyone at
Harrowden Hall.

The result of the Tee-Time Booking System vote,
meanwhile, is expected to be announced shortly.

We will stay in the Elite League

WELLINGBOROUGH have signalled their
intention to enter a men’s team in the Elite
Scratch League again after making it through to
the quarter-finals in their debut campaign in 2021.

The club qualified from the group stages by
beating Woburn, Welwyn Garden City and
Brampton Park, and then recording a battling
draw away to Northants County.

Skippered by Chris Howes (pictured right), the
side defeated West Kent 4-1 in the first knockout
round, before their run came to an end in the
last eight as they lost by the same scoreline to
Stanmore.

Despite two big defeats in games one and four,
Wellingborough still had a chance of making the
semi-finals as the other three matches went the
distance.

However, Gary Grimmitt lost the 18th hole, while
Mark Davis and Jon Harris could only collect a
half point apiece.

Course was magnificent for Ladies Autumn Meeting

LADIES Captain Jenny Wilkinson said: “Although there is an
autumnal feel in the air in the evenings, the sunshine has been
a real bonus for September.

“The course really is in great condition, so there is no excuse for
poor scores on the golf course.

“September has flown by, we have had our weekly Ladies
competitions on a Tuesday as well as holding our Autumn
Meeting.

“This latter event consisted of a 18 hole medal in the morning,
a 10 hole team competition in the afternoon, followed by dinner
in the Vaux room.

“It was lovely seeing so many ladies enjoying themselves,
almost like Covid had never existed.

“The Ladies Autumn Open was held the same week with a
full field. Both of these competitions were played in perfect
conditions with blue skies and plenty of run on the fairways,
resulting in good scores.

“The club diary has also been full; I had the opportunity to play
in Captain’s Day, President’s Day, Captain’s Charity Day, the
Glazerite Pro-Am and the Mixed Exchange Day.

“I’m not sure if my husband is looking forward to my Captaincy
coming to an end or enjoying the peace at home.

“Hopefully the good weather will continue into October and we
can enjoy a few more rounds of golf in sunshine before the
clocks change and winter rules come in.”

Ryan smashes course best on return from injury

RYAN Evans produced a blistering winning performance in the Midlands PGA Glazerite Trophy Pro-
Am as he set a new Wellingborough course record of nine-under-par 63.

The European Challenge Tour pro, who is still on the road to recovery following recent knee surgery,
wasted no time in finding his form as he birdied the first, second and fourth holes.

Evans, who is set to become a father for the first time in the new year, maintained his excellent
form around the turn as he picked up further shots on the eighth, ninth, 11th and 12th holes before
finishing with back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17.

The 34-year-old finished half a dozen strokes ahead of fellow Wellingborough pro Simon Lilly in the
individual category, as well as picking up the team prize alongside amateurs Glen Gulla, Dave Jones
and Dan Liles.

Evans said: “It was great to get out there and set a new course record at Wellingborough - I played
very well considering my knee is not quite right just yet, and I need physio after each round.

“I’m not ready to play a full golf tournament of three or four rounds, so Pro-Ams and local events are
the perfect way to keep playing competitive golf, whilst trying to strengthen my knee.

“I have a medical exemption for the European Challenge Tour for next season, so
the key is to make sure that I’m fit and ready to go for when I compete in 2022.

“I also want to say a big thanks to all the Wellingborough members, who have
been so supportive over the last few months. With a baby on the way in mid-
February, I’m looking forward to an exciting year ahead.”

Wellingborough golfers go MAD at The Nottinghamshire

CLUB member Nick Palmer said: “For over
30 years a mixed group of Wellingborough
Golf Club members have enjoyed a short
golfing break.

“Two couples arrange the break for two
years and then hand over the organisational
duties.

“This year’s break was originally planned for
September 2020, but COVID-19 intervened.

“We were lucky that The Nottinghamshire
Golf and Country Club (pictured right)
could agree to defer arrangements for 12
months.

“The deferment meant that several couples
who had agreed to join the group in 2020
could not make the 2021 dates, providing
an opportunity for some new Club members
to take part.

“We hope they enjoyed the experience and we look forward to inviting them again next year.

“The details are not yet confirmed (COVID-19 again!) but should be announced shortly, now that we
can travel more widely and visit prospective venues.

Pictured below are the 32 golfers who played at Nottinghamshire Golf and Country Club.

Essential drainage work scheduled for late October

WELLINGBOROUGH Golf Club’s Greenkeeping staff said: “The lower part of the course has always
suffered in the winter.

“Following a period of consultation with various contractors, an agreement has been made to carry
out some drainage works to the fairways and adjoining semi-rough/rough on the fifth, sixth and
seventh holes.

“The work should start on Monday, October 25th and, weather permitting, take approximately 10
working days to complete.

“The Club calendar has been cleared in this timeframe since the fifth and sixth holes will need to be
closed whilst the contractors are on site.

“It is hoped that this work will help to reduce still further the incidences when these areas become
unplayable or impassable (ie for trolleys) at the wettest times of year.

“Work to keep the new drains ‘connected’ will be required by our own green staff on a long-term,
ongoing basis - but this initial ‘big hit’ will provide a real boost to improve this area. More information
will be provided to Club Members in due course.

“Work is also under way to pipe, back-fill and make good the drainage ditch to the right of the
13th/14th holes. The end result will be very similar to the open grass ditch to the left of the 12th hole
that was piped approximately 10 years ago.

“The ditch between 13 and 14 has deteriorated for a number of years and a simple solution was not
available. This ditch does cause problems with lost balls for second (or third) shots on the 14th -
those often being blind shots with the final resting position of the ball being unseen.

“This can easily lead to lost balls with the player having to go back to play another ball, thus slowing
down play and causing hold ups. Also, the ditch has become increasingly difficult to maintain as the
ditch side have eroded over a period of time.

“The ditch is being piped (plus rodding eyes for future maintenance) and will be finished off with
spoil that will be generated by the impending drainage works being carried out on the fifth, sixth and
seventh holes in late October.

“It will then be seeded and by this time next year will play much like the grass open ditch to the left of
the 12th fairway, which has functioned very well since getting similar treatment in the past. Until it is
fit for play the ditch area between 13 and 14 will be GUR.”

Scratch League title hopes ended by away defeats

NGL Scratch League

Overstone Park 7
Wellingborough 1

WELLINGBOROUGH rarely threatened to secure their first away victory of the campaign
as they crashed to a heavy defeat at the hands of the current leaders.
Paul Saunders offered the visitors some early optimism with a 2&1 victory in the opening
tie, but Overstone displayed their ruthless streak by clinching the other seven points as
only the final match reached the 18th hole.

Northampton 4½
Wellingborough 3½

ANY slim hopes of Wellingborough
challenging for the title disappeared
with this narrow loss.
Despite a big defeat in the opening
tie, the away side gave themselves a
great chance of victory as Neil Redding,
pictured, (2&1) and Elliot Morgan (4&3)
bagged wins.
Sam Waite then beat Matt Bearman down
the last to make it 3-1 to the travelling men’s
team.
Although Wellingborough suffered a heavy
loss in game seven, with all the remaining
three ties going the distance, an away success
remained on the cards, particularly after Chris
Howes collected a half point.
However, it wasn’t to be for the visitors as Jamie
Milligan and Mark Davis both lost by a single
hole as Northampton kept alive their title
ambitions.
Wellingborough still have plenty to play
for in their remaining two home games
against Northampton and Overstone as
those results will determine who tops
the Scratch League this season.

LOCAL knowledge made little difference as
Wellingborough suffered a rare home defeat to a
visiting team packed full of higher handicappers.

Everything looked good early on as Chris

the opening tie, before Peter Hooton and Andy

in the penultimate game was the only other
time Wellingborough got on the scoreboard.

FOR the second successive match,
Wellingborough were unable to

a close match to their local rivals.

Neil Smith and Peter Davies as
County snatched the honours by

Plans being drawn up for Children’s Christmas Party

CLUB Social Committee member Paul Sisman said: “Our
Mixed Exchange Day was held at Glen Gorse Golf Club
(pictured right) in Leicestershire this year.
“Bathed in beautiful sunshine, 20 couples had bacon rolls
and coffee before playing 18 holes in a team event. This
was then followed by a two-course meal.
“The winning team on 86 points were Ruth Bowe and Gary
Bowe, along with Hash Shah and Bina Shah (all pictured
below). Well done to them and the other prize winners.
“Back at Harrowden Hall, a group of 30 children enjoyed
the yearly Family Fun Day on a very sunny afternoon.
“This free event was centred on some old fashioned sports
day events, and parents and grandparents were surprised
(and mostly pleased!) to find themselves actively involved.
“Those attending also enjoyed a bouncy castle, face
painting, hot dogs and other snacks, and a treasure hunt
around the garden.
“A very popular part of the afternoon was the opportunity to build and take home a bird box, working
with our Club Captain.
“Thanks are due to Jo Hawkins and Lynne Gallagher who planned the day and supervised the sports,
to Dave Hawkins for the bird box building experience and to our catering team for organising food
and drink.
“Also to the Club as a whole for holding and resourcing this event for members families and to the
adults attending who donated £40 to the Captain’s charities.
“Following on from our successful Family Fun Day, the incoming Captains are working on plans for
the Children’s Christmas Party on Sunday, December 12th. Further details will be announced shortly.
“The next Quiz Night is on Friday, October 8th - it will be hosted by the Club Captain, so a good
knowledge of sport may be needed! Please enter your names via the sheets in the Competitions
Room.”

Charley helps European team to brilliant Solheim Cup victory

CLUB professional Charley Hull played a pivotal
role in Europe retaining the Solheim Cup as
she helped the team to defeat the USA 15-13 at
Inverness Club in Ohio.

Hull secured a crucial point on the first morning
with foursomes partner Emily Pedersen as she
fought back from two down with four holes to play
to beat Brittany Altomare and Lexi Thompson,
and earn Europe a three-point lead they never
relinquished.

Despite sitting out the afternoon fourballs
and losing her foursomes game the following
morning, the Wellingborough golfer’s reliance
proved key once again in the fourth session of
play as she bagged another point alongside
Pedersen (pictured right, with Hull).

With the USA briefly drawing level, the pair
helped stopped the home momentum as they
overturned an early deficit to beat Danielle Kang
and Austin Ernst on the 16th hole as the away
side opened up a two-point advantage going into
the final day.

Although the 25-year-old, who was making her
fifth appearance in the match, lost her singles
game it was only after Europe had already
confirmed the overall victory with four wins and
two halves in the opening seven ties.
