Treated like royalty at Buckingham Golf Club

AUGUST has been an important and rewarding month for the Lady Captain and myself as
we have enjoyed a focus on raising funds for our respective charities, Dementia Sings Out and
Northamptonshire Domestic Abuse Service.
We have both held Charity Golf Days and I held an away day at Buckingham Golf Club.
My Captain’s Shield was won convincingly by the Lady Captain’s Team (Elsie’s) including a
tremendous contribution from Claire Guest and Helen Marriott, who also won the individual event
with 57 stableford points. For those raising their eyes at this total, I should point out that a ‘joker’
played on any hole doubled the points.
Sixteen teams of eight entered the Charity Shield and my thanks go to the Team Captains for
organising the day so successfully.
When Buckingham Golf Club approached me for an away day I was sceptical as I had never played
there and I received mixed reviews from those who had.
I did not need to worry though as I was pleasantly surprised by not only how good the course was but
also by the hospitality we received, which was first-class.
There were little things we observed and experienced there which I will feed back to our Greens
Committee as recommendations; including white lines to protect the greens and approach, ‘used tee’
bins buried into the tees etc.
The day was won by Gary Mullen (Kingsthorpe GC) with 47 points beating Andy Cox on countback,
that makes Gary the first person to beat Andy Cox this year (lol).
Clearly, the main aim of these events is to raise money for charity and our repeated thanks go to all
members who support these events and to the Organisations and Companies who sponsor the tees
(listed later within this publication).
I have organised these sponsorship opportunities for four years now and the willingness of the
Companies, principally member-owned, to support our charities is heart-warming.
These events have raised over £6,000 for NDAS and I know Sheena is equally delighted with how
the fund raising for Dementia Sings Out is progressing. Thank you all.
Roy Pouncey,
Wellingborough Golf Club Captain.

Further success proves our ladies are flying!

LADIES Captain Sheena Markham said: “We are delighted to inform the membership that
Wellingborough Ladies were victorious over Stratford-on-Avon ladies on Sunday away at Stratford in
the fourth round of the Annodata.

“The score was 3-2 to us. This is a great achievement given it was away from home on a course
new to our ladies, plus the fact that we have never managed to go beyond the first round previously.

“We have now been drawn at home against Royal Cromer Golf Club on Sunday, September 18th for
the fifth round. Good luck ladies.

“The ladies friendly teams remain unbeaten too, while we also recorded a victory in the
Ladies Cecil Leitch Semi-final as Team Black beat Elton Furze at Kingsthorpe 4-1.

“More details of that match, and also the quarter-final are featured later in this
publication, but we now play Staverton Park at Northampton (Harlestone)
on Thursday, September 15th in the Final! Good luck ladies.

“A huge THANK YOU to all who supported my Charity Day
especially the ladies looking after registration, sales and raffle.

“A special thanks to Miriam (Johnson) who organised
the whole event while I was on holiday. We have
now raised almost £4000 for Dementia Sings Out.

“Thank you to everyone who donated raffle
prizes too - all 44 of them! It was a
wonderful day, so much support and
love for the club and the charity,
and the weather was perfect! Thank
goodness it wasn’t the next day!

“My next big day, and sadly the
last, will be The Autumn Meeting on
Tuesday, September 20th.

“It’s astounding how quickly my year
is going!

“With the Wellingborough Ladies
Club Championships having taken
place late last month, I think it’s
important to mention our 14-times
Ladies Club Champion and double
County Champion Glenda Abbott
who recently passed away.

“No other lady in the club has
achieved as many wins in the Ladies
Club Championships so she holds the record. So,
something to aspire to!

“Glenda (pictured left competing with the next
generation in the Junior Ryder Cup a couple of years
ago) was also Ladies Captain in 1979.

“She was such a lovely lady and a great loss to our
Club - we have lost a dear friend.

“Happy Golfing.”

Improved irrigation system moves a step closer

WELLINGBOROUGH Golf Club are set to hold an ‘all members’ Open
Q&A evening in the coming weeks to discuss the implementation of
an effective and efficient course irrigation system.

Club Captain Roy Pouncey explained: “The heat wave we are
enjoying brings into sharp focus the need for Wellingborough Golf
Club to have an effective and efficient course irrigation system for
future generations to enjoy.

“Members will be aware, through update bulletins placed on our
website, that we hope to commence construction of a new irrigation
system in October 2023.

“We are currently challenging assumptions and ensuring all options
are considered and evaluated before formal contract commitment.

“Once we are ready, probably in late September or early Octover, we will hold an ‘all members’
open Q&A evening to explain the need and process, discuss the options (e.g. fairway irrigation),
explain any limitations/constraints (e.g. water volume required/available), anticipated costs against
the options and financial planning and provisioning.

“Please find time to support this event so that we ensure we get the irrigation system that best meets
the members informed wishes.”

Junior Open attracts biggest field in Northamptonshire

WELLINGBOROUGH’S commitment to giving young golfers
the opportunity to display their talents saw the Golf Club attract
the largest field for a Junior Open in Northamptonshire this
year as 51 boys and girls competed at Harrowden Hall.
Although the 18-hole competition was reduced to 12 holes due
to the extreme heat, all the youngsters enjoyed the chance to
test their skills in the penultimate County Junior Order of Merit
event of the season.
Josh Bodimeade (Overstone Park) coped best with the
weather conditions as the 21-handicapper won the net
prize as he nudged one stroke ahead of Mackenzie Warden
(Northampton) with a net 40.
With the best gross score coming from Bedfordshire’s Owyn
Pepper-Thompson, Overstone’s Jadon Pham strengthened his
position at the summit of the NGL Boys Gross Order of Merit
as he finished one ahead of Wellingborough’s Cameron Black.
Eloise Feely (Northants County) moved to the top of the Girls Gross Order of Merit after beating
home club member Olivia Barby by five shots with a gross 51, while Lily Davies (Northampton) led
the Girls net scoring on 43.
With Wellingborough holding separate competitions for higher-handicappers, Seb Welch (Delapre)
won the nine-hole event by one shot from Kai Peggs (Peterborough Milton).
Seven-year-old’s Ben Robinson (Whittington Heath) and Eloise McIntyre (Overstone), pictured

Ladies and Girls reach the summit in Club Championships

AUGUST witnessed some of the biggest and most popular
tournaments on the Wellingborough calendar as the Ladies Club
Championship and Junior Club Championship, plus the Junior Ryder
Cup, took place at Harrowden Hall.

In the Ladies Championships, Carol Gibbs (pictured on front cover
of Magazine) lifted the top prize once again as scores of 82 and 83
secured a one stroke victory from Claire Lindsay.

Kirsty Critchley led the Intermediate Championship as back-to-back
rounds of 91 earned a four shot success from Miriam Johnson, while
the Bronze Championship went to Bina Shah on 192.

The Wells Cup, which is a stableford competition for the higher
handicappers played over 18 holes, was claimed by Liz Palmer with
an excellent total of 41 points.

Female golfers also did well in the Junior Championship as Eleanor
Hamilton (pictured right, with Club Captain Roy Pouncey) triumphed
on countback from Chelsey Sharp, with a gross 90.

Cameron Black was the leading boy on 92, while Isaac Richardson compiled the lowest net round
of 71 as he also lifted the Squirrels Cup for being the best junior with a handicap of 20 or above.

The Ryder Cup, which is a greensomes team event including adult and junior members, went to the
European side as they defeated the USA by the scoreline 3-1.

Europe’s juniors were Issac Richardson, Ewan Clee, Sam Tattersall and Jessica Barby, while the
USA youngsters were Olivia Barby, Luca Brown, Terry Smith and Harry Dostanzo.

With the Monday Evening Nine-hole Junior events also coming to a conclusion this summer, the
competitions mark the end of Nigel Grimmitt’s four-year stint as Wellingborough GC Junior Organiser.
The Club thank him for his loyal service.

Ladies team secure spot in 2022 Cecil Leitch Final

WELLINGBOROUGH are one step away from lifting the NGL Ladies Cecil Leitch title after the Club’s
A team booked their place in the 2022 final against Staverton Park on Thursday, September 15th at
Northampton GC.

The side (pictured below with caddies and supporters) needed to show all their battling qualities in a
tight semi-final with Elton Furze as they recorded a 4-1 victory at Kingsthorpe GC.

Although Bina Shah completed a 4&2 win for Wellingborough, the overall result remained in the
balance as all the other four ties reached the last green.

Claire Guest, Lema Townsend and Susan Kellett held their nerve for Wellingborough over the closing
stretch of holes, before Elton Furze grabbed a consolation point in the final game.

It was a similar story for Wellingborough in their quarter-final clash with Northants County at Daventry
GC as the team secured a 3-2 victory.

Despite playing against a team, who had finished above Staverton in their Group, Wellingborough
emphasises their qualities as Susan Kellett (6&5) and Shah (4&3) both earned convincing wins.

County replied with a comfortable win and another success on the 18th hole, but it made no difference
to the overall result as Guest confirmed the team victory for Wellingborough by taking the closing
hole in the other tie.

Defending champions Staverton progressed through to the showpiece final with a couple of 4-1
victories against Overstone Park and Whittlebury Park in the last eight and last four respectively.

Sam can’t Waite to run his first London Marathon

HOLLINGSWORTH Team Captain Sam Waite says raising some much-needed funds for a worthy
charity was too good an opportunity to turn down as he prepares to run the London Marathon for
the first time on Sunday, October 2nd.

The 37-year-old, who will be running the 26.2 mile route around the capital for the NSPCC, admits it’s
something he has always wanted to do, but wondered whether time was running out.

Waite (pictured) said: “I entered the ballot for the last seven or eight years, but always missed out.

“I started thinking that if I didn’t do
it before the age of 40, my body
might not be able to cope with the
challenge.

“So, instead, I looked into doing
the run for a charity, who get
allocated spots in the London
Marathon - as long as I could raise
at least £2,200 for them, they
would allow me to do that.

“I’ve got plenty of family and
friends who have children, so the
NSPCC was the perfect charity to
choose.

“Ever since finding out I was in the
run in March, I’ve been working
hard to raise as much money as
possible for them.

“I’m approaching the end of
my 20-week training schedule,
with the aim of completing the
Marathon in less than four hours.

“The training has been interesting
in recent weeks because I’ve had
to deal with the early morning
runs to avoid the hot weather, in
addition to playing golf.

“For example, I did a 20k run early
one morning, and then played
a Scratch League match in the
afternoon.

“I was four up at one stage, but
then started to feel the effects of
the training run and then playing golf - fortunately I managed to hold on to win on the 17th hole.

“My longest run of three hours came last weekend, so I will be scaling it down over the next few
weeks. Hopefully the weather will be a bit cooler in October, although if I can run in these hot
temperatures, I can cope with anything.

“The Wellingborough members have been really generous in sponsoring my run, so I just want to say
a big thanks to everyone who has backed me.”

Re-arranged Seniors Championship is no Payne for Jon

CLUB President Charlie Higgins (pictured below) had the pleasure of
picking up an NGL award on behalf of Wellingborough Golf Club after
the course hosted the County Seniors Championship last month.

The prestigious tournament, which was originally set to be played
earlier in August but was postponed due to the extreme weather,
saw two Wellingborough members secure prizes.

Jon Payne (pictured right) carded two gross birdies and eight pars
in a round of net 69 to lift the President’s Trophy by one stroke from
Chris Butler (Delapre) and Paul Bracegirdle (Oundle).

Club-mate Gary Grimmitt was unable to defend his gross title, but he
did manage to collect the 60-64 age category award.

Alistair Heslop (Northants County) took the gross plaudits by two
shots from Trevor Twelftree (Collingtree Park) and Andrew Sewell (Brampton Heath) with a gross 74.

A run of nine consecutive gross pars at the start of his round provided the foundation for success as
Heslop also claimed the gross team plaudits, alongside fellow County members Andy Billson and
Brian O’Connell with a total of 240.

The net team award went to Collingtree Park’s Liam Costello, Twelftree and Brendon Moss, who also
carried away the 55-59 age category prize. Ted Dunn (Peterborough Milton) was the leading golfer
over the age of 65 years old.

Harrowden Hall provides Fun Day for all the family

THE yearly Family Fun Day was hailed
as a massive success after 30 children
and their families took part on a lovely
sunny day in the gardens at Harrowden
Hall in mid-August.
Social Committee Chair Andy Gallagher
said: “It was a very hot day so, although
Olympic events were offered, most
children opted for the bouncy castle and
craft opportunities, painting pebbles,
making birdboxes, and making clocks.
“Thanks to the club for hosting and
resourcing this event, including providing
and cooking hot dogs for the children.
“A special mention goes to the helpers,
in particular Jo and Dave Hawkins, and
Lynne Gallagher, for their planning of the
event, and effort on the day.
Club captain Roy Pouncey added: “I
wanted to add my personal thank you to
those who ensured that this was a very
successful event.
“Jo, David and Lynne, plus Libby Khaw
and Annette Pouncey should take a bow,
you are very special and lovely people.”
