Welcome to

Thank you for making it a special few weeks for me

IT’S been a busy month of organisation and celebration for my Committee, including the Wellingborough
Cup, our away day at Coxmoor GC and my Captains Away Weekend at MacDonalds Portal.
My thanks go to all who helped, but with special thanks to Brian Joyce, Richard Munns, Glyn Pepper,
Peter Clarke and Loz ‘the fine master’ Weekes.
Northampton won the Wellingborough Cup but, had the highest scoring pair recorded their scores
correctly they would have won the Wellingborough Cup for us. I am so sorry for the pair concerned
and this is a salutary lesson for us all.
If you have not taken advantage of our reciprocal arrangement with Coxmoor GC, I would urge you to
do so; it is a superb course and the welcome extended is always friendly.
Billy Wellborn (pictured below with Tim Harrison, Andy Sterling and Andrew Winfield) turned back
the years scoring 43 points with an incredible 26 on the back nine. He received the deserved praise.
I enjoyed the weekend in Tarporley despite a few hiccups, thanks for making it so special guys.
The highlight, from a golfing perspective, has to be Tim Coleman’s first ever hole-in-one at the 15th
on the Premier course. It was no fluke as David Simpson described it as ‘the best shot I have ever
seen’. Quite why Tim needed to take his putter onto the green for
the photo (right), I don’t know!
I also learned that if Kenny Birmingham wanted chicken he would
have gone to KFC (I have removed a few adjectives). The overall
and clear individual winner was our President Charles Higgins.
I would post a picture of him receiving his prize but he went home
thinking 42 points would not be enough; it was Father’s Day though,
so he is forgiven!
Our last away day takes place at Buckingham GC on August 19th
and we still have a few places available. If any of you are available
to join us, please email or phone me.
Roy Pouncey,
Wellingborough Golf Club Captain.

Lots of surprises in store for you on Lady Captain’s Day

ANOTHER month has rolled around all too quickly. June was a busy month for the Ladies section,
and especially for the various teams as they played numerous matches.
Our friendly teams are so far unbeaten after five matches, while the Cecil Leitch Ladies Team Red
and Black are having mixed results but all very tight.
Our Annodata team, which is Captained by Pat Dawson, won their first match in the competition ever,
against Overstone Park and are now through to the next round playing at home on July 16th against
Northants County. Good luck Carol, Gill, Miriam, Claire and Suzanne - there will be a Big Party in the
Garden after for you!
The Ladies Invitation Day was played in glorious weather with 22 visiting ladies from around the
country and the world with one lady from South Africa. The winning pair were Ellen Steel and guest
Yvonne Wilcox from Rushden with 48 points.
An excellent total of 26 teams entered The Ladies Summer Open organised by past Ladies Captain
Jenny Wilkinson. The ladies were very generous and raised £283.00 for Dementia Sings Out.
I’m looking forward to my Ladies Captain’s Day on July 12th. We play an individual round in the
morning, have lunch and then out again in the afternoon for a 10-hole team game. The ladies can
look forward to a few surprises - not least the weather!
The Ladies Club Championship is played over two days this year on July 19th and 20th. Good luck to
the reigning champions on defending their titles - namely Club Champion Carol Gibbs, Intermediate
Champion Miriam Johnson and Bronze Champion Sue Kellett.
And finally, my Charity Day on August 24th is now full, so thank you to all who have entered teams.
There will be prizes for best Men’s team, best Ladies team, and best Mixed team. Any donations for
the raffle will be gratefully received. Thank you and Happy Golfing.

Introducing your new General Manager, Dan Hacker

EARLY June signalled the start of a fresh era at Harrowden Hall as Wellingborough Golf Club
welcomed its new General Manager, Dan Hacker. After moving from Stratford-on-Avon Golf Club to
take over from David Waite, who retired from the role after 16 years, the new man in charge chatted
with Wellingborough Golf Club Magazine about what he hopes to achieve at our Club.

Why did you apply for the General Manager’s How important is it to see how Wellingborough

I’ve always known about Wellingborough Golf All Golf Clubs are run differently, from the board

Had you ever played the course? and committees playing their part striving for an
enjoyable environment and ‘clublife’.
I played it a long time ago - perhaps 13 or 14 years
ago, shortly after I first arrived in the Midlands.
I really enjoyed it back then. I was impressed
by the unique Harrowden Hall building, which
you don’t see very often at Golf Clubs. As my
career progressed into general management, it
just seemed an exciting venue to manage and to
make the most of the opportunity.

What did you think when you first started?

I was excited - it’s a fresh challenge and has so
much potential. Golf Clubs are very challenging
businesses in normal circumstances, let alone
coming out of COVID with a surge in golf given
it was one of the first activities permitted, not to
mention the many social distancing restrictions
to keep everyone as safe as possible.

What will be key to making the most of the Golf
Club’s potential?

The general demands on running Golf Clubs
seem to grow year-on-year with ever changing
lifestyles and expectations. The key to
successful clubs is how we strive to improve
standards, balance the diary and engage with
our membership across all areas.

What additional challenges has starting in June
brought?

I took that as a positive because we are right
in the middle of the season so it gives me an
immediate opportunity to throw myself into the
role - it’s the quickest learning curve, there’s no
better time really.

Evans and Lilly miss out on 150th Open spots

CLUB professionals Ryan Evans and Simon Lilly were unable to book a spot
in the 150th Open Championships later this month on the Old Course at
St. Andrews after both missed out in Final Qualifying at
Hollinwell GC, Nottinghamshire.
With the leading four players progressing, Evans
came closest to securing a place in a major
tournament for a third time in his career as he
carded scores of 77 and 71 to finish in 12th
position. Lilly missed out after compiling
rounds of 77 and 79.
Evans, who has made the cut in his
last two appearances on the European
Challenge Tour during June, reached
Final Qualifying via a play-off in
Regional Qualifying after posting a
score of 69 at Northants County GC.
Fellow Northamptonshire pros Gary
Boyd, Robin Williams and Callum
Farr also missed out in Final
Qualifying - the latter two at St
Annes Old Links.
Lilly (pictured) still has a huge
event to look forward to later this
summer after earning a place in
the GB and Ireland team for the
PGA Cup match against USA.
The biennial contest sees a
team of 10 pros representing the
Professional Golfers Associations
of Great Britain and Ireland (PGA)
and America (PGA of America)

Lilly confirmed his place by finishing
in the top six in the Order of Merit
following a ninth place in the final
qualifier, the PGA Professional
Championship at Slaley Hall.

heavy defeat.
Although the hosts recorded two victories on the

five games all reached the 18th hole.
However, the away team were unable to convert
any of those matches into wins as Mark Davis,
Jon Corns, Roger Butler and James Northern

REIGNING champions Overstone Park

performances seen at Harrowden Hall as they
completed a dominant win.
The visiting team, which is packed full of
experienced players, wasted little time in taking
control of the match as they claimed early points
on the 12th, 13th and 14th holes.
Mark Davis got Wellingborough on the board

winning the 18th hole, while Jon Harris (pictured)

Encouraging the next generation is key

CLUB Captain Roy Pouncey has called upon members to encourage
more boys and girls to take up the game, and join Wellingborough.

Youngsters are being given the opportunity to develop their skills at
Harrowden Hall by taking part in coaching sessions with Assistant
Club Professional Ryan Connolly on Saturday mornings and nine-
hole competitions on Monday evenings.

Pouncey says the number of contenders for Championship
Weekend, who have come through the
junior section, proves how vital it is to
develop the next generation of golfers.

He said: “The future of Wellingborough
Golf Club relies on ensuring that we
provide an environment where junior
members feel welcome and prosper.

“Looking at our lowest handicappers,
many came through the junior system

- there is a real concern that this
has declined in recent years.

“Junior Organiser Nigel
Grimmitt continues to do
a first class role as lead

and Ryan Connolly is
dedicated to providing
teaching opportunities.

“More needs to be
done though. More
juniors are needed,
so if you know
anyone who would
be interested, please
encourage them.”

ultimately came away empty-handed.

Full Set with... Graham Thompson

IN the latest of a series of Q&A features with the Harrowden Hall personnel, Wellingborough Golf
Club Magazine chatted with the person leading the Senior Men’s section over the next 12 months.

What is your full title?
Wellingborough Golf Club’s Seniors Captain.

What is your golf handicap?
25.

Why did you join Wellingborough?
Best Golf Club in the County.

My perfect fourball would be?
Nigel Mansell, Justin Rose, my son and myself.

What are the best and worst parts of being Seniors Captain?
Best is that I can delegate all the tricky stuff. Worst is not
clearing the Club garden during Captains’ Drive-In (pictured
right).

What did you want to be when you were a child?
R.A.F. pilot, but I gradually discovered that I don’t like
heights.

What would you change about yourself?
Improved hearing.

What is your guilty pleasure?
Best not say, as my wife might read this.

What has been the best advice you have ever been given?
Never offer unsolicited advice.

If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?
Buy a Ford Mustang (petrol).

What do you do in your spare time?
Play lawn bowls.

What is your favourite TV show or film?
Film would be ‘How The West Was Won’. When I
was eight years old, my friend’s mother took me
to the cinema and we watched it in ‘Cinerama’.
Buffaloes charging at you was the best bit.

What has been the highlight of your golfing career
so far?
Two holes in one. One on our fourth hole, and the
other on the sixth hole at Stoke Albany. And, for
the record, they both left ground level!

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on
a golf course?
A squirrel opening my partner’s golf bag to pinch
his cereal bar.
