How to Use This Guide

Provide two (2) sets of plans and complete the following: Minimum 11”x17”
Paper Size.

 Complete this Building Guide by filing in the blanks on pages two (2)

and three (3), and indicating which construction details will be used.

 Fill out a County building permit application. Please refer to the

Combination Permit for Residential Buildings (this includes applications
for Planning, Zoning and Building).
The majority of permit applications are processed with little delay, within
7 – 10 working days. The submitted documents will help determine if the
project is in compliance with building safety codes, zoning ordinances and
other applicable laws.

INCOMPLETE PLANS AND/OR APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED

This handout was developed by the Pottawattamie County, Iowa, Building & Safety Division as a basic Plan Submittal under the 2009
IRC to help in questions that may arise in the application process. It is not intended to cover all circumstances or Code related issues as
they pertain to individual projects.

Foundations Requirements: An accessory utility building 240 square feet (e.g. 12’ x 20’/exterior dimensions) and less of floor
area shall have a foundation type A and an accessory utility building larger than 240 square feet of floor area shall have a
foundation type B.
