“One Stop Happiness Shop”

By Bella Ramirez and Stella Goettelman

Here is some exciting news coming at you! The 3rd and 4th grade classes performed a play called the “One-Stop
Happiness Shop.” Keep reading to learn when it was, who the lead roles were, what it is about, and the background of
the story.
The “One-Stop Happiness Shop” is about a store that claims to sell happiness to all who may
enter. Dr. Zelle, Rachel, Peyton, and Joe learn how to control their anxiety. They also
learn that happiness doesn't answer everything, and that it's okay not to be okay.
The lead roles were Mazma, Glitch, Joe, Rachel, and Peyton. These characters were played by
Brennan Rass (4th), Bella Ramirez (3rd), Ryder Ortmyer (4th), Madie Jarosh (4th), and
Stella Goettelman (3rd). The performance was Friday, April 22, 2022. They performed the play for grades 4k-5th. This
was their dress rehearsal.
In a few interviews with cast members they shared their feelings about the play. Brennan Rass, who played Mazma, said,
“I was stressed at the beginning of the play but later while practicing the play I was not so stressed. I liked how there was
a lot of movement and motion.” Mrs. Liburd, who was the director and music teacher, said, “I was really proud and
blown away by the cast. I think it's really awesome that at such a young age they all memorized a lot of lines.” Grace
Brandenburg, or Dr. Zelle, said, “ I wasn’t that scared, my favorite part was at the end of the
Peyton scene. I was very excited because it was my first time having a lead role on stage.”
We hope you all were able to attend this play! Amazing job done by all of the 3rd and 4th graders!

Band Concert 1

By Mason Kochanski

Did you know that the 5th grade had a band concert? 5th grade was in a
concert on Tuesday, April 26, 2022 and it was their first one! 5th through 12th
grade were in the concert. The concert lasted for about an hour and a half.
You may be thinking, what songs did 5th grade play? The answer to that
question is “Hot Cross Buns,'' “Mary had a Little Lamb,” and “London
Bridge.” The 5th graders had been practicing since the beginning of the year.
This is when 5th grade learned how to read music and play an instrument!
Since December, they have been working on their concert songs. They did an
amazing job and they will keep doing an amazing job throughout their high
school years!

What’s Happening Around School?

EcoLab

By: Sammy Valdivia

The Ecolab is an interesting place and is really helpful to many of the animals that live there. Many of the
animals that live in the EcoLab are deer, birds, toads, turtles, goldenrod gall flies and, rodents. All these
animals need the EcoLab. Since the EcoLab is home to many animals, when we enter, we have to be
respectful of their home.
The Ecolab is an awesome place to experience all the nature around Door County and
learn about new plants, animals, and many more things. When the 5th graders go to the
EcoLab, they discover a lot about nature. 5th grade even found a dead painted turtle,
but they don't know what caused the turtle to die. A cool fact is that there is a tree
named a Pine tree. It is also called white because its needles have five buds and
white has five letters.
The 2nd graders also go to the EcoLab frequently. They get lessons at the EcoLab that are about the forest.
This is very similar to 5th grade. 2nd Grade also learns about the trees that live there and the species that
live at the pond. They have a name for when they go to the EcoLab, Forest days. The second graders also
mentioned that they saw snakes, deer, tadpoles, butterflies, and sucker fish in the EcoLab. The EcoLab
is a great place to extend your learning outside of the classroom.

will be getting a new officer, which will be interesting for everybody to get to know him or her. Hilsabeck
says that “ He's going to miss all of us,” and he might come in and check up to see how we are doing. Once
he retires, he will enjoy spending time with his wife and two kids. He will also be visiting some family in
Montana, riding motorcycles, and working on his classic car. Hilsabeck is also going to work as a real estate
agent. He has been a police officer for 32 years, but working here for three
years. Also, aren't you guys wondering who his sidekick is? She is
Caitlin Chartier. She is following him because she is interested in the
police force. Caitlin really enjoys working with Mr. Hilsabeck because
she likes to watch him work and help people. When she gets in the
police force, she wants to work on patrol because she wants to be
outside more than inside. Also, because she wants to be free and to
help people in need just like Mr.Hilsabeck. She will go to NWTC to
become a cop. Make sure to say, “Good luck!” to Mr. Hilsabeck and
Caitlin when you see them!

DI Goes to Globals

By: Mayra Stenzel and Jackson Toivonen

Did you know that two Sevastopol Destination Imagination (DI) teams, the Ultimates and Micro Magix, are 4
going to globals? In The Ultimates, there are six middle school kids; Ben Martin, Evan Isaksen, Zoey Copiskey,
Liam Schultz, Marcus Mann, and Finn Mathews. In their skit they did the “Just Roll With It” Structure
Challenge. In that challenge they have to create a structure that has to hold as much weight as it can and with a
skit that tells about at least one character who becomes a legend.
In the Micro Magix there are seven elementary kids; Jack Toivonen, Mayra Cordua Stenzel, Shane Leist, Silas
Martin, Maggie Thomas, and Ryder and Will Ortmayer. They did the “Up Close” Scientific Challenge. In this
specific challenge, they had to build and create a skit about at least one character that encounters at least one
microscopic object in at least one microscopic world.
Globals took place in Kansas City, Missouri from May 19-27th. The Micro Magix presented on May 22nd and did
an Instant Challenge (a specific challenge that they don’t know about until they do it and can’t be talked about
until the end of May) while the Ultimates did there skit and Instant Challenge on May 24th. Both teams won!
The elementary also won the highest instant challenge award and the middle school won a renaissance award!
Congratulations to all involved! What an accomplishment!

Middle School Transition

By: Connor Lardinois

If you're a 5th grader this year in Sevastopol School you should know that it’s the last
year of Elementary school and that middle school is right around the corner. No need for
5th graders to worry though, Mrs Dantoin and Mr Retzlaff are going to give you a slow,
steady start into middle school life. And just so you know, 6th grade is fun too. Before
we have to hear what Mrs Dantoin has to say about 6th grade, let's hear what the 5th
graders think of middle school. Reid LeClair says he’s excited for middle school because
he wants the longer gym class. Jameson Malcore says he’s excited about middle school
because he wants to be part of one the top middle schools in the state. David
Rosales-Hernandez says he’s excited about middle school because he likes that there are
going to be more classes. Ben Olson says that he’s excited about middle school because
there will be more activities and new fun experiences. Now let's hear what Mrs. Dantoin
has to say about middle school. She says that Middle School consists of ten classes in a
full year but seven classes a day. This is because some classes are one semester long and
others are every other day. There are a couple differences between middle school and
elementary, like the Red and Black days and even your own lockers. This change
between elementary and middle school barely ever troubles students, and is not a change
to be worried about. The transition to middle school is a big transition. There are some
that are worried, while others are excited. But there's no need to worry about it. Mrs.
Dantoin and Mr. Retzlaff are there to help!

Technology Safety

By: Maura Marggraf

Tik Tok, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter are all fun. But that fun comes with a price. You don't know who 7
could hack into your account or snach up your personal information. Here are some ways you can stay safe
online.
One way you can stay safe on the internet is to have a strong password. You may think you are safe if you
have a password like this: M7O6g4mq2. But a password like that would take 3 days at 1000 tries a second to
guess. But if you have a password like: Correcthorsebatterystaple that password would be discovered in 550
days at 1000 tries a second. You don't want your name or other personal information leaked onto a site. Also
you never want your pet's name, favorite food, or your birthday e.t.c. So if you find your password is easy to
guess, maybe start thinking of some silly statement instead.
Also, you should not give away your personal
information. If you give away your phone number, you
don't know who'd snatch it up. Also never give
anyone your age or name. You may think that you're
safe if you don't talk to people or have a strong
password. But you never know how tech savvy
people are. So the next time you go online, make sure
to be safe.

What is there to do this Summer?

By: Olive Goettelman

With summer coming up there are a lot of fun activities to do around Door County. There are so many fun places to
go and fun things to do.
Summer is a good time to spend with family and friends. Let's see what teachers and
students like to do with their families. Mr. Skiba likes to go bike riding with his family
in the summer. Mrs. Wiesner likes to go camping. Fifth grader Olivia Baier is going to
the cabin with friends and family. They like to go on their pontoon and jump off into
the water. These are a few ideas for you to do during your summer break. Lots of people
go on vacation during the summer.
Let's see some places kids in Sevastopol are going to. Fifth grader Brooklyn Ayer is going to Maine this summer. She
will be having fun with her family.
This summer's weather is hopefully going to be nice and warm. The spring weather has not been on our side; it has
been rainy one day and sunny the next day. It is hard to predict when we will get some decent outside time. Let’s
start hoping for some warm and balmy weather.

There are so many fun things to do in Door county. You can go to Sunset Beach in
Sturgeon Bay. They have a playground that you can play on and an amazing beach to
swim at. There is also Egg Harbor Fun Park, which is also a fun place to go. It is a
very popular place during the summer season. There is mini golf, go karts, a bouncy
house, water balloon shooters, batting cage, ziplining, and an arcade. The school year
is ending and summer is coming up fast. There are so many fun things we can do
during the summer. Make sure to get outside and enjoy the nice weather. I hope you
have an amazing summer!

Tundra Tales

By: Mayra Cordua Stenzel and Brennan Rass

Have you ever heard of the Tundra Tales reading program? It is a program that encourages kids to read more. Lots of 8
kids are interested in it and read way more than usual. The Tundra Tales program is a way to encourage kids to read,
read, read.
Kids have different opinions about it. Kailee Gilbert thinks that it is a good idea because it gives kids an opportunity
to get a reward for doing your homework. Jack Toivonen thinks that it is a great idea because it gives kids an
opportunity to get a reward for reading just a little bit at night. However, some kids like Clara don’t like it. She says
that it is boring, because some kids don’t like to read. Stella Geottleman thinks extra homework is a good learning
experience.
Teachers also have opinions about it, most are very similar. Mr. Skiba thinks that the Tundra Tales program is a good
way to encourage students to continue reading at home. It is also a motivator for students who are fans of the Green
Bay Packers. “I am impressed with how many of our elementary students completed the challenge,” he says! Mr.
Schauske thinks that it is technically a reward for doing your homework. This is because in 4th grade you have to read
20 minutes every night and you have to read 80 minutes every week, so, if you do your homework you would do extra
reading every week. Mrs. Ayer thinks it is a good way to get a reward for something that the kids are already doing
every week; reading. Extra homework normally isn’t motivating for kids, but Ms. Bortle thinks it promotes
independent reading and encourages students to read instead of playing games. Mrs. Ploor says it is great to see all the
minutes that students read and the books that they read.
Different people have different opinions on the reading program. Students have different opinions too, but at the end
of the day, all of the students and teachers agree it is improving their reading.

What do you think about Homework?

By: Jackson Toivonen

How much homework Sevastopol gives Did you know that starting in first grade you should have ten
students versus how much experts minutes of homework and you should go up by increasing ten
suggest. more minutes each year,” according to The National
Education Association? In my opinion, we should have less
homework. Many students have a strong opinion about 9
homework. Here are a few: I got Preston's opinion that in
fourth grade we should only have math and 20 mins of
reading. He thinks we should not have word work packets. Ali
in 4th grade thinks our homework is fine and we should keep
it the way it is. Caroline from 3rd grade thinks that in math
she would like just a little bit more but she thinks for the
other subjects she wants to keep it the same. Stella in 3rd
grade thinks that it would be a good idea to have more
homework.
One reason I think we should have less homework is because
some kids are involved with a lot of after school activities so
they may not have time to do their homework. For example,
right now, I’m involved with DI (Destination Imagination)
and it takes a lot of time. When I don’t have DI, I have piano
or dance lessons. Sometimes, even when you do have time you
just want a break. Sometimes you just want to watch some
TV or color a picture.
Another reason we should have less homework is that it can
be overwhelming at times; like if you didn't understand the
lesson, and if you tell your parents that you don’t understand
the problem or page they make it even more confusing. Also, if
you tell your parents you need help from your teacher, they
say try to figure it out, but a lot of the time I just need some
help from my teacher.
My last reason we should have less homework is because I
want to spend time with my family. I have to get to school at
7:00 so I only get to see my sister after school from 4:00 - 5:35.
I barely get to see her! And I want to chill when I do my
homework, not rush to get it done so I can be with my
Family. Sometimes kids just need a break to chill.
We should have less homework because it will let kids have
more time at home, seeing their family, and not worrying
about anything. That is just my opinion!

What do you think about Cursive and Typing?

By: Caroline Luedtke and Brennan Staats

Cursive or Keyboarding, which do you think is more important?

Should Sevastopol teach keyboarding, cursive, or both? Let’s take a look at the teacher's opinions on
whether we should teach one or the other and in what grade. Let’s also explore some facts about
keyboarding and cursive and let you decide, which one would you want to be taught?!
All of the teachers that we interviewed agree that kids should be taught keyboarding in third-grade,
but should still be exposed to cursive. Here's what Mr. Schauske thought on whether we should teach
cursive or keyboarding, “We should teach keyboarding because it is used more often than cursive, but
the third grade teachers should still
teach cursive.” Mr. Skiba’s reply was,
“The students at Sevastopol should be
taught keyboarding because it is one of
the primary forms of communication
right now. Cursive is an artform that
students should also be exposed to in
third grade.” We think that the third
grade students should be taught cursive
in their end of day or I/E time and at the end of the year after the yearly phonics is done.
It is important to learn how to read cursive because many important documents are written in cursive
so students should be taught how to identify and read it. Doctors say that it is important to have the
ability to read and write cursive because cursive would exercise the brain, like learning how to play an
instrument.
A good thing about learning how to keyboard is that it helps kids focus on the task on the computer
screen rather than the keys. Knowing how to keyboard will help kids finish computer tasks faster and
easier.
Those were some facts and opinions about cursive and keyboarding that hopefully will help you decide
whether you want to be taught cursive or keyboarding or both.
