Time Capsule

By: Alexis Staats and Abby Rock

Time Capsule in Pages from the Elementary Memory Book
New Building

Has your classroom been invited to do a photo or quote for a time capsule? What is a time capsule? A 1
time capsule is usually a copper box, with artifacts for future people to find and learn about the past.
To learn more about the time capsules of Sevastopol, continue reading!
Time capsules show a sliver of what life was like in 2020-21, and will be an important part of learning
about history in the future. Why we need (or want) a time capsule during this time can be answered by
Mr. Skiba, “It’s a monumental time,” he says, “we are moving into a new building, destroying the old
one, and finding new ways to live with the pandemic.” If that's not monumental, we don’t know what
is!
It is a mystery when this time capsule will be found. It is buried behind a southern, exterior wall in
Mr. Hilts’ new office, and is under a cornerstone reading “2020-2021.” Mr. Skiba estimates that the
time capsule will be found in approximately 50 years. Bricks will cover the time capsule, making it
invisible to passerbys.
Did you know that this is not the first time capsule found or hidden in Sevastopol? This most recent
time capsule is the only one hidden in the newest edition of the school though. Mr. Madden used to
make time capsules with the fifth graders when he was a teacher, and he did them a lot of different
times. Mr. Luedtke is very curious about whether we will find any more time capsules in the old
building when we knock it down, and he is hopeful that we will.
Some interesting items that were put in the copper time capsule include a five-dollar bill, a Sevastopol
pen, report card, lanyard for car keys, yearbooks, high school newspaper and the latest issue of the
elementary Pioneer Press newspaper, as well as a magnetic school calendar of the year 2020-2021.
Elementary students also contributed their memories of the building through a memory book put
together by all the teachers. Many different teachers and administrators put in different items for the
future to discover!
Only the future knows how the world will be different and time capsules help show a sliver of time to
future generations.

Building Update

By: Abby Rock

Did you know that the new school will be fully functional for next year? The elementary
students will be able to move in and start learning! The middle school science and art room will
also be ready. Learn all about this and more in “All About the New School!”
What’s new? The entire new building has been furnished! There are new handwashing stations
around the school, the whiteboards have been installed, with a blue plastic covering, and the
water in the sinks work! The ceiling, cabinets, and knee walls (short, waist high walls) have been
put together. Some walls have been covered with tiles and bricks from the old school. The halls
are now longer and wider than those of the old school. In order to “break it up” a bit, Gypsum
wood ceiling boards are covering some of the length, giving it a textured look. Gypsum wood is
considered a weed in most regions, but when stained, it can be very pretty, and it is a very
durable material. Plus, it is necessary to cover some pipes in the ceiling network. As you can see,
there are a lot of new changes!
Have there been any delays in construction for the new school? Even though most kids are sad
that there was barely any snow this winter, that was fantastic for construction. The cold
weather did not make an impact, because by then, most work was inside. The weather was
perfect for building.
Here are some fun facts about the new school that will make life easier for both students and
teachers…

1. The art room will have almost double the storage space
2. The section between music rooms and the old building will also be torn

down. The dates of the demolition will be advertised on the website.
3. Bricks from the old school will not only be used for walls, but also

columns!
4. The ceilings in the rooms have hexagon cuts for the garage doors
5. There will be a better amount of space for everyone!
The new school is going to be a big change for Sevastopol, but definitely one for the better!
There will be more space for learning, a better environment, and many other upsides. Are you
excited to move in? I certainly am!

Out With The

Old, In With The

New

By: Autumn Sargent and Selma Burtnett

Did you know that Sevastopol School has been open
since 1924? Now we are saying farewell to the oldest
part. The oldest part of the building is going to be
knocked down during the summer. When we return
to school this fall, students will be in the new
building, as well as in updated parts of the building.
This year there was a tour of the old building. People
of the community came in and said goodbye on
Friday, April 30, 6-8 p.m, Saturday, May 1, 2-4 p.m,
and Sunday, May 2, 2-4. The tour was of the whole
school and took about two hours. Anyone from the
community could have come in and looked at the old
school before they start demolition.
The area that they will start the demolition with is
the oldest part of the school. The demolition is going
to be on an eight week schedule. They will start on
Monday, May 24. They will start the demolition with
the oldest part (1924) connecting with the
elementary gym, which is the newest part from 1991.
Now that the oldest part of the school is going to be
gone, we can still be happy that we are getting the
new school. Some people will still be sad, so get your
tissues out and say goodbye to the old school.

Living Wax Museum: Q & A By Selma Burtnett

The third graders have been doing the living wax museum for many years, and you may be wondering what it is.
The living wax museum is when the 3rd-grade kids dress up and act as different people that had an impact on
history. For example, Helen Keller, George Washington, and many more. The kids also have to write a biography on
their famous person. This biography helps us bring our character to life. This year the third graders did the wax
museum a little differently due to Covid-19. The students’ guardian will take a video of their child performing their
script, and then some of the videos will be posted to the school Facebook page.

Interview with Mr. Skiba:
Q: Why do we do the wax museum?
A: I believe that this is the 12th or 13th year of completing the living wax museum. The wax museum
incorporates many areas of study, including writing, history, informational research, theater, and art. This makes
it a great project for third graders.

Q: What is important about the wax museum?
A: Above all else, I believe that it’s important for our young students to recognize important contributions made
by individuals in the past. Many women, minority groups, and activists dedicated their lifetimes and in some
cases, lost their lives, to make for positive change. Knowing about these individuals may inspire younger
generations to continue working to make for positive changes and appreciate the efforts of those before them.

Q: What is the most popular person that the students pick?
A: Jackie Robinson, Harriet Tubman, Helen Keller, and Sacagawea are a few that come to mind that we have
every year. Presidents are also a popular choice.

Q: What are some people that you don’t want the students to pick?
A: We do not typically allow for duplicates in the same year. Historical figures who made a negative impact on the
world are not approved.

End of the School Year

By: Kaile VanDenBogart and Sadie Rikkola

Even though there have been some changes this year we are
still having the end of the year activities. Some of the
activities we will be doing are the kindergarten balloon
popping countdown, the Book Fair, and a school wide carnival!

Ms. Bortle, Mrs. Seifert, and the rest of the PTO are hosting
the school wide carnival. It will be at the Sevastopol Town
Park on the last day of school, May 21. Each grade will have
about two hours to participate in activities such as; bowling,
bean bag toss, burlap sack race, egg and spoon race, ducks in a
pond, limbo, book walk and more!!
The Book Fair took place in the Elementary Library from
May 3rd-7th. It was hosted by Mrs. Ayer, and ran by parent
volunteers. Mrs. Ayer’s goal is to promote a love for books and
reading. Plus, all the proceeds from the Book Fair go towards
RIF, so Mrs. Ayer can buy books for kids to pick out every
year.
On April 30th, Kindergarten popped their first balloon in their
end of year activity. This balloon told them what they would
be doing on Monday, May 3. Some of the things the kids will
be doing are Disney Day, pajama day, Star Wars day, beach
day, hat day, and many more. They will be popping a balloon
each day until May 20th, this balloon will be telling them
about the school wide carnival they will be attending on May
21.
We are excited that we are able to be doing some of the
“normal” end of the year activities!

Summer To-Do Around Door County

By: Mackenzie Delfosse

This summer we are looking forward to warm weather, a long summer break, and some enjoyable family
time. Lucky for us, we live in Door County. Which has a lot of activities that we can do with friends and
family.

Don’t stay cooped up at home all day. Let your
parents know that you can go play while they get
work done. Thank goodness for the summer camps
that the YMCA offer. Kids can go to summer camp
and go hang out with their friends. Parents can get
work done and not feel guilty, because the kids will
have a blast!

This year the farm is open! The Farm
is always a fun time. You can feed
corn to many of the animals, and you
can bottle feed the goats milk. You
can also hold the cats and kittens.

There are also many other outdoor activities that you
can do around Door County. Why not go to the beach
like Portage Park, Clark’s Lake, or Sunset Beach? After
you are done going to the beach on a hot summer day
and you are ready to relax, why not get some ice cream
to cool you off. You can get ice cream from Frozen
Spoon, Dairy Queen, Grumpy's, Culvers, Door County
Candy, Not Licked Yet, and the Chocolate Chicken.
There are also many state and county parks, such as;
Cave Point, Potawatomi State Park, White Fish Dunes,
Peninsula State Park, and Rock Island State Park. There
are trails and beaches that you can enjoy at all of these!

Don’t forget to have a great summer and try some of these local activities!

EcoLab

By: Everett Luedtke

You may be wondering what is going on at the EcoLab these days. What has changed, which classes are
going there, and future events. This article will catch you up to speed on what’s happening at the
EcoLab.
As you may know, the 5th grade is not going to the EcoLab for the time being because they have been
attending swimming lessons at the YMCA.
The class that recently went to the EcoLab was second grade. They went to the EcoLab to observe
erosion and how to prevent it. They also inferred what animals live at the EcoLab by looking for animal
tracks and animal scat. Second Grade goes to the EcoLab about three times a year.
Kindergarten is going once a month to observe the changes in the environment and using the scavenger
hunt made by the 5th grade class. Kindergarten worked on a project for the birds at the EcoLab by
making bird feeders, that have been hung up around the EcoLab.
The Ecolab is open to anyone anytime, so remember to stop by and enjoy the fresh air and scenery.

Summer Bridge

By: Sadie Rikkola & Kaile VanDenBogart

Over the summer all of the elementary students will

be given a workbook to help them with school skills.

The book focuses on reviewing concepts from the

grade you just left, plus some challenges for next

year. Each grade, from 4K through middle school,

will get a book for their grade level to do over the

summer. There is a different book for each grade

level, some grade levels even have two books.

If you finish the book over the summer you will be

awarded a certificate. Mr. Hilts says, “Their name

{kids who finish and turn in the book} will be

entered into a drawing for a gift card of a prize from

one of our business partners…” Like Jimmy Johns,

Culver’s, Sonny’s, and more.

So spend a little time working on it this summer! It

could help you in school next year, plus if you turn it

in, you could get a prize! 7
