2016 - TERM 1 Today we farewell Di Bewley, not only from GK but also education. Di is

GTHoldUCRoSinDDAonYation children. The impact she has had on these students, not to mention
colleagues and community would be hard to measure but undoubtedly

LCAyBbOerURSaDfAeYty Gr 5 & 6 2017 MEGA FETE INFORMATION SESSION PLANNED
Pa2reNnDt THeaAcNhDer UInNteIrFvOieRwMs Last week I expressed concern that our biannual MEGA FETE was at risk of not going ahead
Tuesday 15SthHMOaPrch 3.10- due to a lack of response in filling necessary facilitator roles for the event. There are four key
4N.3O0 W OPEN MONDAY roles requiring filling which will be supported by other volunteer members of our community.
and FRIDAY MORNINGS Our recent School Council discussion raised the need for more information to be offered to
people who may be considering the opportunity to assist, but remain hesitant due to not
Wednesday 23rd March knowing enough about what the roles entail. For this reason we are planning a MEGA FETE
INFORMATION SESSION on Tuesday 19th April at 7pm to provide a more comprehensive
3.20—7.00pm outline of tasks. Attending the session does not automatically volunteer you to a task however
LMAaSrcThSDAAVYETTHHUERDSDAATEY:24th if you are at all interested, we encourage you to attend so clarity of expectations can be
achieved.

TShuun1d4tahyA1pr7th APRIL What a great term we have shared together
Cyber Safety Grade 5&6 Today marks the end of a very busy but rewarding first term at GK. Our Preps have started
and settled extremely well, with the Grade 1-6 students equally settled and ready to soar.
Tuesday 19th April Michael Ymer, our math consultant, kick started the year with professional learning for staff
Mon 2M5tEhGAAprFETE and parents. An Open afternoon and Prep Family BBQ soon followed, providing our families
ANZAICNDFAOYRMATION an opportunity to meet and greet each other in a casual, relaxed manner.
SESSION Camp Quality visited us all with very important education around health and school photos
ensured everyone brushed their hair and teeth especially well for at least one day this term.
7.00pm Our annual Fun Run brought out the House Colours, with RED House taking the win for the
day and we finished our eight full week term with Parent Teacher Interviews. Add to this all
SAVE THE DATE: the learning and growing we have achieved together and it shows how very proud we should
be of each other.

FUN RUN day a success
Last Thursday was a very hot day for our annual fun run, however this did not deter our students giving 100% of their best on the
day. Some students ran all the way while others ran some and walked the rest. All of them completed the course, which is the
ultimate measure of success. The house colours were proudly on display and the sportsmanship and encouragement
demonstrated by our students was pleasing. Thanks to David Blackburn and his team of staff for their organization of the event.
Thanks also to our House Captains for their first official responsibility for the year, which they performed reliably.
HARMONY DAY - ORANGE WASHES OVER GK
MONDAY we celebrated DIVERSITY at GK, sharing our cultural similarities and differences. JSC thanks you for the $548.15
you raised on the day. They are deciding where this money will be targeted and will let you know in an upcoming LINKLETTER.
Together we are strong!

Canteen
As you may know, GK has three trading operaƟons that we believe enhances the school and benefits all families and staff. The Out of Hours School
Program, Uniform Shop and the Canteen are all an integral part of life here at GK and the School Council strongly believe in providing these services to
all families. It is also important for these services to run as financial viably as possible so as not to put extra financial pressure on the school. We are
very lucky that we have great staff & volunteers who do a fantasƟc job and run all three operaƟons very well.
Unfortunately we are bound by things we cannot control, & just as we recently have had to increase prices in the Uniform shop we now have to pass
on increases from manufacturers and put up some of our canteen prices. A lot of the products in the canteen have not increased for a while so we are
taking this opportunity to make these increases to assist with the financial success of the canteen. We hope that you understand why these increases
have had to happen and we hope you sƟll conƟnue to support the canteen in the future.
We have included a new updated Canteen price list which will be effecƟve from the start of Term 2.
Uniform—Pinafores & Waterproof Jackets
The order form for the Pinafores & Waterproof Jackets will be going out in Week 1 of Term 2 with all the informaƟon. The prices for 2016 are: Pina-
fores are $45 and the Jackets are $30. Sizing garments will be available at the office for you to try before you place your order.
REMINDER—FIRST INSTALMENT OF $60 FOR THE GRADE 5 & 6 SPORTS IS NOW OVERDUE, SOME PAYMENT
NEEDS TO BE RECEIVED TO ENSURE YOUR CHILD’S PARTICIPATION IN INTERSCHOOL SPORT IN TERM 2

GLEN KATHERINE MEGA FETE – 2017 is at risk of being CANCELLED.
In order to have a Fete in 2017 volunteers are required NOW to Co ordinate this event.
Unfortunately we only have one parent willing to assist on the committee so far.
A Mega Fete committee needs to be formed this month to commence preparations for next year’s fete. Date’s need to be set, rides ordered
and planning started to ensure this great day for our children can occur. It is not only a fantastic way to raise a substantial amount of
fundraising dollars for GK but is also a wonderful day to show case our school and bring families and the community together.
Support, guidance, and documentation provided by the PFA and School Council.
The core committee general consists of the following positions/roles:
Convener, Finance, Operations, Sponsorship/Donations

BASIC BREAD RECIPE
In Science this week, we have been making bread, we wanted to share our secret recipe:
Basic bread recipe – as made by the 5/6s this week in science.
Ingredients for a loaf of bread 250g of bread flour
Ingredients for a roll 150ml warm water
1 tablespoon yeast
• 1 kg strong bread flour Pinch of sugar and salt
• 625 ml tepid water Flour for dusting
• X3 7 g sachets of dried yeast , or 30g fresh yeast
• 2 tablespoons sugar
• 1 level tablespoon fine sea salt
flour , for dusting
Method
Stage 1: making a well
Pile the flour on to a clean surface and make a large well in the centre. Pour half
your water into the well, then add your yeast, sugar and salt and stir with a fork.
Stage 2: getting it together
Slowly, but confidently, bring in the flour from the inside of the well. (You don't want to break the walls of the
well, or the water will go everywhere.) Continue to bring the flour in to the centre until you get a stodgy, por-
ridgey consistency – then add the remaining water. Continue to mix until it's stodgy again, then you can be more
aggressive, bringing in all the flour, making the mix less sticky. Flour your hands and pat and push the dough to-
gether with all the remaining flour. (Certain flours need a little more or less water, so feel free to adjust.)
Stage 3: kneading!
This is where you get stuck in. With a bit of elbow grease, simply push, fold, slap and roll the dough around, over
and over, for 4 or 5 minutes until you have a silky and elastic dough.
Stage 4: first prove
Flour the top of your dough. Put it in a bowl, cover with cling film, and allow it to prove for about half an hour
until doubled in size – ideally in a warm, moist, draught-free place. This will improve the flavour and texture of
your dough and it's always exciting to know that the old yeast has kicked into action.
Stage 5: second prove, flavouring and shaping
Once the dough has doubled in size, knock the air out for 30 seconds by bashing it and squashing it. You can now
shape it or flavour it as required – folded, filled, tray-baked, whatever – and leave it to prove for a second time
for 30 minutes to an hour until it has doubled in size once more. This is the most important part, as the second
prove will give it the air that finally ends up being cooked into your bread, giving you the really light, soft tex-
ture that we all love in fresh bread. So remember – don't fiddle with it, just let it do its thing.
Stage 6: cooking your bread
Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/gas 4. Very gently place your bread dough on to a flour-dusted baking tray
and into the preheated oven. Don't slam the door or you'll lose the air that you need. Bake for 25-30 minutes
or until cooked and golden brown. You can tell if it's cooked by tapping its bottom – if it sounds hollow it's done,
if it doesn't then pop it back in for a little longer. Once cooked, place on a rack and allow it to cool for at least
30 minutes – fandabidozi. Feel free to freeze any leftover bread.

ITALIAN CAPTAINS 2016
Ciao, mi chiamo Nick (Hi, my name is Nick) and I am one of the new Italian captains. The other Italian captaincy
belongs to Erin P. You might see me around the school, I will most likely be helping Signora Portaro with Italian
Day. I will probably add to the Italian blog. Visit the Italian BLOG deliss.global2.vic.edu.au
This term we have been learning about the Carnevale in Italy. It is on Pancake Day and is the start of Lent, or the
forty days before Easter. It is when people dress up in fun costumes and more importantly, masks. One of the most
popular places for the Carnevale is Venice. There is also an annual battle in the city of Ivrea. It is called The Battle
of the oranges. It’s when, you guessed it, people battle each other by throwing oranges at each other. If you want to
know more look it up on a website to find out more. hƩps://youtu.be/PXz3hZlFL1M Nick
Ciao. Mi chiamo Erin. I believe I would make a great Italian captain because I am good at talking in front of a
crowd with confidence. Secondly, I believe I would make a great Italian captain because it is a great leadership role
and opportunity while I’m in my last year of primary school. Finally, I would be a great role model for younger
kids. Erin
This year the Italian Room is located in the RL 18 Portable. I am at Gk on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Buona Pasqua e buon vacanze. Happy Easter and enjoy the holiday break. Signora Portaro
Leaders Local Grant Finalists
GK has become finalists in the Leader Newspaper Local Grants Competition! We have sub-
mitted an idea to get some more nesting boxes around the schools to encourage wildlife into our
school grounds like parrots, sugar gliders, possums and bats. Plus, with the money we will also pur-
chase some infra-red cameras so students can see what's inside the box using their ipads.
BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP. Please vote for us by going to http://www.leaderlocalgrants.com.au/
user/registerering with an email address and then following the emailed link to login and search for
'GK Wildlife Warriors' and then giving us your 10 votes.
Encourage friends and family to vote too. The projects with the most votes will be awarded
$1000 towards their project. Voting closes end of March so VOTE NOW.
