By Dr Praneetha Palasuberniam Coordinator of Internationalization In line with the 17th Sustainable Development Goal, strengthening regarding implementation and revitalization of global partnership, we have become a hub of higher education excellence for students globally, whereby old geographic barriers become irrelevant, deeming it borderless. The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, notably the Department of Nursing, has catalyzed communication between neighbouring nations by creating and maintaining internationalization programmes under the leadership of Ms Mazlinda Musa, with the assistance of the Centre for Internationalization and Global Engagement, using an online platform. Students from the University Muhammadiyah Surakarta in Indonesia and the University of the Immaculate Conception in the Philippines attending our in-house module (MN10404 Medical Surgical Nursing I). These endeavours are inbound and outbound emobility programmes with the University Muhammadiyah Surakarta in Indonesia and the University of the Immaculate Conception in the Philippines. This experiential learning began in March 2021, with almost 50 students embarking on inbound and outbound programmes. Our inbound module (MN10404 Medical Surgical Nursing I) exposed students to pathophysiology and diagnostics for patients with cancer and other terminal illnesses in palliative care. This module also included nursing interventions, management and perioperative care plans via a scenario-based learning approach. INTERNATIONALIZATION 5

By Dr Praneetha Palasuberniam Coordinator of Internationalization INTERNATIONALIZATION In my opinion, the inbound and outbound programs are great! The outbound program allowed us to experience what it feels like to be in UMSurakarta. Although this program is conducted via an online platform, the students and lecturers from UMSurakarta still welcome us with open arms. The inbound program lets us meet new people. The environment in the class was very cheerful, it made us feel like we were a part of them and they were a part of us. -Aleister Yee Chun Yin, Student of Nursing Diploma Year I On the other hand, the outbound programme was conducted in Indonesian, giving our students the best opportunity to introduce a new language. This module, titled 'Pencegahan dan Perawatan Cedera' (POR40733), introduced students to sports-related injuries, wound prevention and management procedures, giving them an idea of the differential treatment approaches across countries. The involvement of students from other institutions fosters cross-communication and networking, resulting in the production of unforgettable experiences and connections. Variety and creativity are indeed the best methods to keep learning engaging and exciting, as Aleister so eloquently highlighted in his testimony. nI col al b o r a t ion with Special Olympics M ala y s ia S( OM) INTERNATIONALIZATION The HEAL Research Unit of Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UMS organised a virtual fitness program entitled “International Special Olympics (SO) FIT 5 Virtual Home Fitness 2021”. This virtual fitness program is a collaborative effort with Special Olympics Malaysia (SOM) scheduled to run every Saturday since it was launched on 14th August 2021 and was continued until the end of January 2022. This program aimed to create awareness of the importance of fitness and provide accessibility for the Intellectual Disability (ID) community to be physically active while encouraging more people to join as volunteers for community empowerment. People with ID have significantly lower fitness levels than the general population across all health-related activities. Despite exercise acts as preventative medicine for health, intervention for exercise seems to be lacking among people with ID. The ID community is at risk of being disadvantaged in society due to the lack of needed support, awareness, and care that facilitate social inclusion. Therefore, this program has employed the FIT 5 Exercise from Level 1 to Level 5, in which SO athletes have learned basic movements involved in four exercise components (endurance, strength, flexibility and balance), with gradual increment in the difficulty and intensity across all five levels. 7 By AP. In addition, HEAL Research Unit provided a one-off virtual fitness assessment service for participants involved, evaluated and gave feedback on their overall fitness level. Through the assessment, few athletes have shown a significant improvement in their fitness level. As part of a promotion for public awareness, the Virtual Fitness for ID, this project was submitted for competition in the International Putra InnoCreative Carnival in Teaching and Learning (PicTL) 2021. A poster entitled “Virtual Fitness Program for People with Intellectual Disability towards Social Inclusiveness and Community Empowerment” was successfully presented and was awarded a silver medal. The SO FIT 5 Virtual Home Fitness 2021 was opened to the public and free of charge. It was attended by 73 participants from all over Malaysia and other countries such as India, Singapore, and Brunei. We have received excellent feedback from the participants, who found this program has significantly improved their health and not only fitness level, confidence level, motivational behaviour, and socializing aptitude of ID athletes’. The Science Management Sector of Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) organised collaborative workshops with Clinical Research Centre of Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital 2 on 1st – 3rd of March and 23rd – 25th of March 2022 respectively on Good Clinical Practise. The workshop started with a series of online talks by expert panels and ended with a face-to-face examination in the main exam hall in the FMHS, UMS. Despite having the examination via physical manner, it went on very smoothly and followed the standard operating procedure set by the Pusat Kesiapsagaan dan Tindakan Covid-19 of UMS. In practice, Good Clinical Practise is an international ethical and scientific quality standard for any researcher who plans to design, conduct, record and report clinical trials that involve human subjects. This is to ensure that the study subjects are safeguarded accordant to the Declaration of Helsinki. By the end of the day, the participant who has passed the examination will be awarded with a license in the form of a certificate. Both workshops were attended by approximately 60 participants each, mostly from the Ministry of Health Malaysia. We were fortunate that the top management had agreed to financially support the workshop for each participant from UMS. We have received excellent feedback from the participants, who found the events to be very wellorganised and useful for their future academic careers. We hope that in the future, UMS itself will be able to organise this important workshop internally. To find out more about this event, please contact AP. By Dr Sylves Patrick Senior Lecturer & Ophthalmologist Almost 2 years since the Covid-19 pandemic started, the cataract surgery carnival was held again on 21–23 January 2022 at Kota Belud District Hospital. The event was organized by the Department of Ophthalmology, Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) and Kota Belud District Hospital and launched by the Kota Belud Director Hospital, Dr Primus John. Three ophthalmologists were involved in the event, namely: Dr Sheena Mary Alexander (The head of the Ophthalmology Service, Sabah State and also the Head of the Department of Ophthalmology, QEH), Dr Chen Chui Yain (QEH ophthalmologist), and Dr Sylves Patrick (Senior Lecturer and practising Ophthalmologist of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences UMS and QEH). CLINICAL SERVICE 13 From the left: Dr Sylves Patrick, Dr Primus John, Dr Sheena Mary Alexander and Dr Chen Chui Yain. Dr Sylves Patrick with the operating team.

Many of the rural people of Sabah have difficulties in accessing a tertiary centre (QEH) for further cataract treatment, even more so during the COVID-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, the number and severity of cataracts have increased due to delayed cataract treatment. Many of the patients had difficulties in terms of financial support and transport. Additionally, many of them had worse visual acuity of perception of light. The event aimed to reach the rural population to treat their ocular diseases, especially cataracts, at the nearest district hospital that is convenient for them to visit. A total of 32 patients were operated on for cataracts including pterygia. All of the patients were very grateful that the cataract surgery was performed at the nearby district hospital rather than far away at QEH. Additionally, they were also given a free intraocular lens, which was sponsored by a very generous non-governmental organisation. As one of the operating surgeons, I felt satisfied and relieved knowing that after the surgery, many patients with low visual acuity of perception of light were able to regain very good vision, transitioning from being visually dependent to being visually independent. The happiest moment for the patients was when they were able to see their family members again. This event will be repeated in the future since cataracts are endemic in the population. By AP Dr Mohd Firdaus Mohd Hayati Head, Department of Surgery CLINICAL SERVICE 15 Circumcision is one of the important surgeries performed globally. Approximately 70% are due to ritual intent, but the rest are because of other causes such as trauma, infection, etc. Hence, performing a clinical workshop especially on circumcision without using a real patient, seems practical. A workshop on circumcision was organized by the Department of Surgery, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in collaboration with the KIK team, Hospital UMS on the 30th of October 2022. This workshop aimed to highlight the safe and correct technique for performing circumcision using the dorsal slit method. It was participated by 20 HUMS staff in various posts including medical officers, assistant medical officers and staff nurses. Throughout this workshop, the participants had the opportunity to have pre- and post-questionnaire sessions, listen to the sharing talk by AP Dr Mohd Firdaus bin Mohd Hayati and later participate in the practical session on the self-created penile model. The event was successfully facilitated together by AP Dr Nornazirah Azizan and the KIK team. Overall, most participants were satisfied with the organized workshop and hope to have a credential and privileging session soon. To find out more about this event in the future, please contact AP Dr Mohd Firdaus Mohd Hayati @ [email protected]

Based on the Malaysian National Eye Survey II (NESII) revealed that the prevalence of blindness in Sabah is four times higher than central peninsular of Malaysia. The most common cause of low vision is cataract and uncorrected refractive error. Furthermore, higher prevalence of shortsightedness and squint among children after the pandemic Covid-19 is also related to the excessive usage of gadgets among them. On this note, Ophthalmology department, FPSK conducted an Eye Healthcare Education Program on 25th November 2022 at Rural Medical Education Centre, Sikuati Kudat. This would be a serial flagship programme by the Ophthalmology department. With the theme “Good Eye, Good Vision For Everyone”, this program was aimed to increase awareness of eye healthcare and train the teachers to identify eye-related problems, especially short-sightedness and squint among school children. There were eighteen teachers from local communities involved as participants. This program was officiated by the dean of FPSK, Prof. Dr Mohammad Saffree bin Jeffree representing UMS Vice Chancellor. Among the topics discussed were refractive error (by Miss Nur Syuhaidah Saidi), eye problems related to systemic diseases (by Dr Sylves Patrick) and introduction to squint (by AP Dr Shuaibah Ab Ghani). Participants were also having a practical session on visual acuity and squint examination during the evening session. Overall, this program was conducted smoothly. All participants were satisfied with the program and determined to initiate a basic eye screening program for their respective schools in the future.
