Last week, I had to take the local bus home from school because my father’s trusty steed had unfortunately broken down somewhere in the middle of the concrete jungle. It was a scorching day but a slight tingle of excitement flowed in me as I skipped to the bus stop. I had never been on a bus. Little did I know, I was neither mentally nor physically prepared for what I would experience. The bus skidded to a halt in front of the bus stop. As the doors swung open noisily, I was welcomed with the foul smell of body odors and smelly armpits. The passengers were packed like sardines in a can. That was when I had the most important internal debate of my life - should I get on that thing? I didn’t want to risk being late for my tuition class … again. So, taking a deep breath, I hesitantly stepped into the suffocatingly hot oven. None of the seats were vacant. In fact, there was hardly any space in the bus. As the door slammed shut behind me, I had no choice but to squeeze in between two giants twice my age. In next to no time, beads of sweat formed into little streams that flowed down my back, making my uniform stick uncomfortably to my body. My shiny black hair that cascaded beautifully past my shoulders now laid damp and limp, plastered to my head, as if I had just dived into a pond. I felt like a potato being baked in the oven, with my sweat as seasoning. I was convinced that the driver must have been a drummer in his younger days considering how violently he stepped on the gas and brake paddles. To top all these off, the inconsiderate passenger beside me was blasting rock music from his handphone. My eardrums screamed for mercy! Soon, the bus screeched to a stop. Like lava flowing from a volcano, a group of passengers alighted. My eyes quickly scanned the bus and zoomed in on a vacant window seat. As if my dear life depended on it, I hurriedly made a beeline to that spot. The window seemed stuck. It was only opened a fraction. I glued my face into that narrow gap, breathing in deeply the warm polluted yet heavenly air from outside. I earned some weird stares but my reputation was the least of my worries now. Twenty more minutes of agony gave way to a whoop of joy as the hell-bus stopped at my bus stop. I practically flew out the bus, ready to kiss the ground with glee. A gust of warm wind embraced me erasing the miseries I had endured throughout the ride. I swore that that will be my first and last time on a local bus. I am taking Grab instead. Wait! What?!! Ishould be dead! He leapt out of the bed to find his body full ofscars. Zen lived a mundane life with a standard nine to five job. Boredom slowly turned into depression .. until he saved a life, but at the cost of his own. Bam! The sound of the truck hitting his body magnified in the quiet morning air. He was on his way to the office when he saw an accident about to unfold. Intinctively, he dived towardsthe little girl, pushing her out of the path of an oncoming truck. The impactsent his body flying into the air, landing 10 meters away in a crumpled heap. Scarlet liquid pooled beneath hislimp body asthe world darkened and he breathed hislast. The cold charcoal black of loneliness hugged him tight … until a voice called, softly at first, then louder. ‘Zen! Zen! ZEN!’ He jumped up ,surprised. He felt different. Approaching the mirror, he gasped as a huge muscular beast of a man stared back. Unknown memories of a recent battle with the ghouls filled his head. His eyes widened in disbelief asrealization hit him like a three-ton-truck. He was no longer Zen the nerd, but Zen the Warrior of an ancientrace in a different world! His calloused hand touched the tip of the jeweled daggerstrapped to his humongousthigh. A smile formed. This was his chance atredemption - a new beginning from the boring life he lived on earth. The battle raged on as he stood on the cliff, staring into the eye of the ghoul king in this one-onone combat of the leaders. The huge one-eyed giant let out a deafening howl and charged towards him. Sword in hand, Zen flexed his muscles. His eyessparkled as he grinned, “Why not?” In one fluid move, he took a step forward and swung the sword towardsthe charging king. The blade made contact. Black liquid spurted out and the creature collapsed like a fallen tree. “THAT … WAS .. EXHILIRATING! BORING ZEN IS DEAD. I AM ZENITSU!!” Zen shouted, punching the air victoriously. He looked up and was momentarily blinded by the brightsun. As his eyes refocused, he found himselfstaring into the amused expressions of passing pedestrians. Apparently, Zen did not die. The truck had stopped in time. Zen had just fainted with shock. Chuckling, he shrugged, took a bow, and went on his way. Thisincident, though small, has given Zen a new lease in life - a new beginning. He had been battling this demon of boredom and the one-eyed ghoul king called depression, and has emerged victorious. He is now ready to begin again. A NEW BEGINNING BY ETHAN ISKANDAR (5SC) RUANGAN BAHASA INGGERIS HORNBILL 2022 55th Edition | 2022

Once, many years ago, we innocently bought a house next door to an ex-pat marine couple. She was about 6’2” and strongly resembled Arnold Schwarzenegger. He was about 5’7” and probably weighed 130 pounds. They were very house-and-yard proud, and thoroughly obnoxious about it. After living next to them for a short time, for some unknown reason, they decided to mount a campaign of general obnoxiousness against us. It started small ; a note on my friend’s car that was parked three inches over to their side in front of our house. Then it escalated … rapidly! They reported us to animal control for ‘farm animals’ inside the city limit - we had two rabbits. They reported us to the health department for leaving our empty fish pond with a small amount of water in it and breeding mosquitoes. Actually it was hydrochloric acid to wash and prep the pond for repairs. They reported us for modifying our fence without a permit. We neither moved, tore, nor replaced it. We merely nailed some boards back up. They reported us for loud parties, quiet parties, and no parties. They called the authorities on us so often it became a joke. We ignored all of this. We just made sure we had an extra muffin or a cup of coffee for whatever official they called out that day. But then, they committed the ultimate crime. We were having breakfast on the patio one lovely morning when I happened to look over and see a sprayer nozzle come through the fence slats. They were spraying poison on my tomato and chili plants. Now, we love our sambal, and I make an absolutely mouthwatering deliciously tantalizing fresh sambal. They had dared to poison my babies. For me, that’s murder! Unfortunately, it was not an offense by law. So I had to devise my own revenge. One thing about their house is that it must have been built on an ant hill. They constantly fought ants. We regularly heard them complaining about ants as they tried to rid these pests from their yard. Being considered patio homes, our houses had lovely large patios with huge kitchen windows that had sliding glass opening onto a pass-through serving counter. So I made a very, very large batch of simple syrup and froze it in ice cube trays. When the Marines were out, our friends and us would sit on our patio and took turns to toss the sugary ice cubes next door. We had a points system that ranged from getting the cubes on the patio, to getting them up against the base of the sliding door, to getting them onto the counter and up against the opening of the window. In no time, we gave them ants … lots of ants! Not being particularly close neighbor's, the Marines gave us no warning when they went on vacation. We did notice it was a lot quieter and we didn’t overhear any screams between them about the sticky mess that regularly showed up on their patio. I didn’t really think much about the consequences. We just continued our game of toss. Besides, I was behind on the points. So, the bombardment of sugary ice cubes continued. The ants celebrated. They sent out telegrams worldwide inviting all of their relatives to move. They had found paradise. The grass was green and there was a regular supply of sugar drops. They invaded. There were tiny black ants, larger brown ants, and big red ants. Hosannas were sung. They built neighborhoods of McAntsions. They did the can-can across the counter. They held parades. There were even Friday night fiestas with ants dancing the poco-poco. It was festive. -My S w e e t Re v e n g e A d a p t e d b y T e a c h e r D o r o t h y - RUANGAN BAHASA INGGERIS HORNBILL 2022 55th Edition | 2022

I went through three 2kg bags of sugar. We knew exactly when the Marines got home from their six week holiday. We could tell by the screeches of anguish. Apparently the ants had made their way inside. There were screams from the kitchen, the pantry, the laundry room, and even the bathroom. A full on war ensued. The Army Ants dug foxholes and built bomb shelters. The Fire Ants formed Special Force teams and close protection units. Their war raged on for months. Despite the regular supply of sugar stealthily dropped from my side, the ants were decimated. The Marines were seen collapsed in their patio chairs, hollow eyed with exhaustion. Their once pristine backyard now closely resembled the aftermath of World War 1. RUANGAN BAHASA INGGERIS HORNBILL 2022 55th Edition | 2022 Busy with their battle, calmness reigned on my side … until The Marines got reinforcements in the form of their son, Marine Jr. The ants finally retreated. With nothing else to focus on, the Marines’ attention came back to us. But not for long. For, you see, during their battle with the Ants, yours truly here did some researching and discovered that squirrels are not only exceedingly dexterous, they are inordinately fond of overripe fruits … but that’s another part of my revenge .

Everyone has heard it before, “love yourself", but how many of us actually do? How many of us actually care for ourselves? Maybe at some point of your life, you feel or have felt unworthy, unwanted, unimportant. But if you’ve never, then good for you. All those things get stuck in your head because you allowed it, you chose not to do anything about it. Thus, making you feel like you’re nothing when in reality you are something. You probably don’t see it but I assure you, others do. Maybe you feel like you’ll be better if you’re him or her but you’re not. You will never be like him; you will never be like her. It is physically impossible to be like anyone because everyone is different. From what I know by experience, you will slowly but surely care for yourself once you’ve gain confidence. As the saying goes, “confidence is key”. But to get there, you have to find out what’s draining you ; this person who says that you’ll never make it, or that person who says that you’re better off not doing this or not doing that. And if you’re willing to listen to them, then you’re the problem. The second they say that you’re not worth it, cut them off. Friends, best friends, classmates, whoever they are, they are not worth it. People who care for you would want what's best for you. Acceptance. Sometimes we cannot accept other people, let alone accept ourself. For me, I felt like I was completely finished when I failed a test. I had studied for hours like there was no end to it. I felt like I couldn’t do anything right because of my test results. But dwelling on what has happened would not take me anywhere. A person can dwell on the past as much as they want but it will never change. Tthe past is the past. We have to learn to accept and move on. In my opinion, acceptance is something you must have in order to love yourself. It is what moves us away from harsh judgements. Let it all out. If you feel the need to cry, then cry. If you feel like the world is too much for you, set it down and take time for yourself. No, you’re not sensitive or weak for letting your emotions out. You’re not selfish for taking time off. You’re simply doing what you must do in order to become the best version of yourself. People who rely on you the most are the ones that need to understand and acknowledge that you’re human too. You’ll feel overwhelmed, you’ll feel tired, you’ll feel like turning your back against everyone, and it is completely fine to feel like that because those are human emotions. To the people who tells you what to do and how to live your life, or asking you to comfort them, to make them happy, ask yourself this - Who are they to tell you what to do? Who exactly are they to control your life? You live for yourself, not anyone else. This is your life, not theirs. Don’t feel bad or guilty for not helping and giving into them. You are not responsible for their happiness; you are not responsible for anyone's except your own happiness. In conclusion, in order to love yourself, you must learn how to accept yourself and gain the confidence that you are you. There may be 8 billion human beings living on Earth but none of them are you. You are 1 out of billions. The answer to my question is, yes, we will eventually care and love ourself once we know how to put ourself over anyone and anything else. RUANGAN BAHASA INGGERIS HORNBILL 2022 55th Edition | 2022 It’s a shame how people choose to use something that will be used just once, from a material that will last forever. A single plastic bag sticks around the environment for ages, longer than human. Plastic waste can take from 20 to 500 years to decompose. As a human being, we know that no matter how hungry or starving we are, we would never consume plastic because we know that it is not food and could put our lives at death’s doors. But what about the animals? What about the animals that suffer because of human inventions? They don’t know what is food and what is not food. Thousands of marine animals such as sea turtles, seals and sea birds are killed each year after ingesting plastic or getting entangled in it. These sea creatures' deaths lie at the hands of the irresponsible humans. There are billions of us yet not even half of our population care to do anything about it. It’s because we think that we will be gone by the time it is too late to do anything about plastic pollution. Yes, that is true. We may no longer be alive but what about the generations that are yet to come? I, for one feel guilty for what the animals and the future would have to go through. With that, there are many small things we can do that will bring a big impact. From what I have witnessed, there are quite a number of students in school who buy water. Stop buying mineral water. If your excuse is “I don’t have enough money to buy a water bottle”, then save money. The school provides filtered water for students to fill their bottles absolutely free of charge. So, why spend money to buy water? Rather than using a plastic bag that would only be used just once, we can carry a reusable bag/recycle bag. A recycle bag doesn’t take up much space inside our bag. Don’t be afraid to say ‘no’ when offered a plastic bag. Besides, recycle bags are so much more ecofriendly and cuter compared to some boring old plastic bag. Aside from that, we can bring our own lunchbox and utensils to school or when ordering takeouts. It’s not that troublesome to bring your own container. It’ll save you 50cents from the extra charges on a disposable plastic container. Even plastic Tupperware is better than nothing, at least it’s reusable. Rather than using the chopsticks that come in plastic which you would only use once, why not bring your own utensils? Not only does it save the environment, it’s also clean. Last but not least, quit smoking. Yes, that’s right. Cigarette butts can be found anywhere and everywhere. From the city sidewalks to the middle of the ocean, products like cigarettes, smokeless tobacco and vape adds to the build-up of plastic pollution. Not only is it damaging the environment, it also puts your health at risk. Small pieces of plastic, bottle caps and cigarette butts can be found inside the body of a dead bird. As mentioned before, animals do not know what is and what isn't food. Sea turtles consume plastic because they often mistaken it for jellyfish. Animals such as elephants and fishes are forced to live and drink from the rivers that are polluted with mountains of plastic. How would you feel having to live in such an environment? With that, I strongly encourage everyone to use less plastic for the sake of the environment and for a cleaner one. It only takes small efforts to make a big change in the world. RUANGAN BAHASA INGGERIS HORNBILL 2022 55th Edition | 2022 One very interesting book I read recently is entitled ‘The Classic Literature Club’. Don’t let the title fool you, because although the story is indeed centered around students of a classic literature club, the activities they carry out is akin to that of a detective agency. ‘The Classic Literature Club’, or CLC for short, is a mystery novel written by a Japanese author named Kenshi Yonezawa. CLC is set in a Japanese highschool located in the countryside of Okinawa, Japan. The story follows the protagonist, Oreki Houtarou, in his first year of high school. He wanted to live a peaceful life, unbothered by unnecessary disturbances, until he faced Chitanda Eru, a girl who chases after every single thing or issue she is curious about until she gets the answer. They meet in the clubroom of CLC after Oreki was forced to join by his meddlesome older sister. The story progresses with Chitanda asking Oreki to solve a mystery about the clubroom key, which to her pleasant surprise, was solved with no problems. Joined by two other schoolmates, the four members of CLC solve mysteries of their peculiar school and their small eerie town under the cover of a highschool club. I really enjoyed reading this piece of literature, to the extent that I call it a masterpiece. The story had me on the edge of my seat as the characters faced obstacles and missing clues. The pairing of Oreki’s listless nature and Chitanda’s enthusiasm made for a dynamic relationship that was never boring. Together with the other two main characters, they brought life into the book. The plot was eye-opening and unpredictable as I could never foresee what would happen next. The most entertaining part of this novel is that it never becomes overwhelmingly gruesome or dark. The mysteries are perfectly age appropriate for highschool students, like the martial arts dojo who is exceptionally older than the rest of the school buildings, or the missing archives in the school library. Even without high-end crime issues, the story manages to stay intricate and intriguing. This is what I admire the most. I would highly recommend this book to my friends, especially because it is age-appropriate, and the characters are lovable and memorable. Plus the dialogues are hilarious and entertaining. MY BOOK REVIEW -CHLOE JOSEPHINE TOMMY WONG 5SC-

I’m about to vomit. “THUMPTHUMPTHUMPTHUMP” my heart was pounding so fast. “AAAAAHHHHHH….” I ran for my life. I called an ambulance, then the NYPD (New York Police Department). Yesterday, my best friend Bella called to invite me to the newly opened Queen Park Club that recently opened in Queen Park Street. Usually Bella and I would hang out at clubs twice a week at least, and she would always be there to talk with the wild boys, in hopes of finding the one true love she calls Soulmate. I, on the other hand, would make sure she doesn’t do anything overboard, or maybe make a few beneficial connections with the people there. I initially planned that after my classes, I’d get back to my dorm to pick up my clothes and make up then head up to Bella’s to dress up. I recently bought a nice dress and since I haven’t worn it yet, I might as well wear it later. At Bella’s dorm, while doing our make-up, she came up with something strange. She mentioned that Isaac was the one who invited her to the Queen Park club. I don’t trust Isaac. Although he’s actually a pretty friendly and generous guy , there’s something just not right. Isaac doesn’t really reveal much about himself even though he is seen as this big friendly teddy bear. Since he arrived, cases of missing people have oddly been skyrocketing in New York City. So it’s nothing odd in suspecting Isaac. Plus, Bella isn’t close with him. I agreed to go to the newly opened bar with Bella and Isaac because even if he could be some psychopathic serial killer, at least there would be people around because Queen Park is actually a really busy place, even at night. If I had a choice, I would recommend James to Bella instead. He has this honest and fun personality. I looked at the time and we were nearly running late. Yanking her out of the dorm with our bags, we headed to the Queen Park club. Isaac was already standing in front of the entrance, waiting for us. Bella rushed out of the car and ran with her arms wide open to Isaac, leaning in for a cuddly hug. I just stood and glared at him for 5 cold seconds, then warmed up and gave him a little smile. Then, we all went in together, unaware of the horrors that would unfold. RUANGAN BAHASA INGGERIS HORNBILL 2022 55th Edition | 2022 Queen Park Club By Effie Claire (4ACC)

The NYPD arrived a few minutes after my call. Sitting me down in a corner, they asked what had happened. “Tell me what happened.” I felt nauseous thinking back what happened. A big lump formed in my throat, and tears threatened to escape. Trying to hold the emotions I felt inside, I took a deep breath. “At first, Isaac, Bella and I went in the bar. Then Isaac’s friend, James, greeted us, he was already inside. Nothing much happened other than us dancing, talking and drinking. We were just having fun, goofing around about our university professors and talking about our romantic pasts. Then, Bella excused herself to the restroom…and then…” Nausea started to build up from the pit of my stomach. I paused for a while and breathed deeply. “5 minutes later…James and Isaac excused themselves to get more drinks at the bar for us, so I was left alone. When 10 minutes passed and neither had come back, I got curious. So I went to the lady's restroom for Bella. And as I opened the door…” Tears blurred my eyes and I started to sob. “Bella was on the floor. Blood was everywhere. Standing over her was James … and Isaac. James was holding his belt … and there was a knife .. that’s when I called you.” That was 2 months ago. James was finally brought to justice and serving time. In the 9 months since he arrived, it was found that he had kidnapped a total of 40 girls, and killed 25. The day my instincts made me check up on Bella probably marked the end of his murderous sprees. It was pure luck that we got him drunk enough that night as he forgot to lock the restroom door. Bella, is still recovering in the hospital. Good thing I got to her in time. As for Isaac … the police are still looking for him and we have yet to know the motive for his killings. RUANGAN BAHASA INGGERIS HORNBILL 2022 55th Edition | 2022 Zachmo Of Pescarnia By Dilys Wong Huey Wern (4SA)

“It was also getting hotter and hotter! At one point, our fins felt burned as we approached the surface of the water there. None of us knew why it was getting hotter as time went by. All of us had no choice but to move. And now that the monster's here,we have to move away again. The farther the better.” The mayor was there to oversee the evacuation. “As the mayor of Pescarnia, it is with a heavy heart that I declare we will have to move to a new home now. As the monster is approaching......” The gossip guppies - Linda, Laura, Afrendo, and Bunzo, who were beside Zach, started “whispering” to each other. At least, they thought they were whispering. “I bet it has fangs, just like Mr. Tiburon's” “And huge eyes” “Oh and a gigantic tail!” “Don't forget tentacles. Gotta have tentacles.” Soon, the mayor's speech came to an end. “Alright folks. Time to get your fins moving in search of our new home!” announced the mayor. “Mr. Mayor, aren't we going to fight the monster? Why should we just move and let the monster take over our home?” protested Zach, followed by rolling eyes from the crowd. “I say we go on a quest to hunt the monster down and defeat it once and for all.We can't let this keep happening to places everywhere!” No one agreed with Zach nor did they disagree. “I agree with Zach,” said a voice from the crowd.Everyone turned and stared at Angela with disbelief. Angela was known for being ignorant to most things, and the current crisis was no exception. “Why should we just let the monster takeover our hometown? I'll go with you Zach. Let's defeat the monster together.” RUANGAN BAHASA INGGERIS HORNBILL 2022 55th Edition | 2022

Zach was quite surprised actually. He did hope that someone would join him on his quest but he never thought that it'd be Angela. “Us too!”chimed the gossip guppies. “Anyone else?” asked Zach. Silence...... “Alright, we'll begin our quest now,” Zach proclaimed with mixed feelings. He was excited about going on a quest but also disappointed that only five were joining him. Nonetheless,he was grateful that there were those who answered the call. No one could deny that whatever they lacked in size, they made up in gusto. After a brief exchange of words, mostly about fighting the monster being a terrible idea, they said their goodbyes and started their journey towards the direction of the monster. Surprisingly, their journey brought them closer and closer to the surface. “According to the map and some folks, we're almost where the monster was last seen.”announced Zach. “Does the monster really have fangs and many big eyes?” Angela asked curiously. “I'm not sure. We'll see for ourselves when we get there. But no matter how scary the monster looks, I'll do whatever it takes to stop it from going any further.” declared Zach, beaming with determination. For a split-second, Angela and the gossip guppies seem to see a cape wrapped around Zach. Without wasting more time, Zach and the others quickly made their way to the recent whereabouts of the monster. RUANGAN BAHASA INGGERIS HORNBILL 2022 55th Edition | 2022

“Guys, what's that?” squeaked Afrendo. The rest of them looked up and saw a looming shadow above them. A great black shadow with sharp edges that somewhat looked like fangs was getting closer and closer to them. It had terrible red eyes that made the shadow look more ominous, and black fluid with an offensively malodorous smell produced by the monster slowly blended in with the water. They also noticed that the corals there looked so sad and pale, and that's not to mention the intense heat they felt even though they were not that close to the monster. The temperature of the water was proportional to the distance of the monster from them. As they bravely swam closer and closer, Zach abruptly came to a realization about their monster. “This is not a monster. It's a ship.” exclaimed Zach calmly. “What's a ship?” the others asked in unison, confusion written all over their faces. “Humans travel to places using ships,” explained Zach. “Is there any way we can stop the monst .. wait, no I mean ship?” asked Angela. “I do have a plan in mind, but I need some help from one of my human friends. I’ll have to visit the land above. Looks like it's time for another adventure. Are you guys in?” “Of course!” the four guppies yelled, ever in unison. “Count me in too!” Angela smiled in excitement, puffing up her spines. And so, Zach, Angela, and the little guppies went on their quest to save Pescarnia. RUANGAN BAHASA INGGERIS HORNBILL 2022 55th Edition | 2022
