Thebeginningsofbadmintoncanbetracedtothemid-1800sinBritishIndia,whereitwas
createdbyBritishmilitaryofficersstationedthere.ItbecameveryfamousinPoonain1.873,a
Britishtown,sothatiswhyitfirstknownamewasalsoPoonagame.Atthebeginningtheyused
champagnebottlecorkswithsomefeathersstabbedonit.Thefrstofficialbadmintonrules
werepublishedin1.893inEgland.Finally,almostonecenturylatr,itbecameOlympicsportinthe
BarcelonaOlympicsin1.992.Nowdays,sinceAtlantaOlympicsin1.996,itisamixedsport
becausemenandwomencanplaytogether.

NATUREOFTHEGAME
Badmintonisaracquetsportplayedusingracquetstohitashuttlecockacrossanet.
Althoughitmaybeplayedwithlargerteams,themostcommonformsofthegameare
‘single’withoneplayerpersideand‘doublels’withtwoplayersperside.Theflightof

In2015,hebecamethejuniorchampioninthePerakandSelangorBadmintonOpen.

MisbunreceivedhisearlyeducationinprimaryschoolsinBantingandthenfurtheredhis
studiesatVictoriaInstitution,KualaLumpur.MohdSidek,hisfather,imaginedhis
childrenbecomingbadmintonacesstartingwithhisfirstson,Misbun.Bytheageof
sevenin1967,Misbunhadbeguntobeseriouslytrainedbyhisfatheratthebadminton

PLAYER’SFAULTINBADMINTON

1)Strikingtheshuttletoohighduringservice.
-Playermusthittheshuttlebelow1.15meterswhentheyserve.However,it’s
quiteeasyandcommontohittheshuttleatahigherheight.Players,especially
professional,usuallytrytopushtheboundariesofbadmintoninordertogain
thebiggestadvantagethattheycan.Inthatcaseofserves,hittingtheshuttle
atahigherheightallowsthem togetabetterangleontheirshortservesand
alsodecreasesthetimeittakesfortheshuttletocrossthenet.

2)Doublehits
-Adoublehitiswhenoneormoreplayersonthesameteam hittheshuttle
consecutivelybeforeitgoesbackoverthenet.Thisusuallyoccursindoubleswhena
playerbarelymissestheshuttlebutendsupbrushingitinstead,allowingtheback
playertohittheshuttle.It’susuallyprettyobviouswhenthishappensbecausethe
shuttletypicallywobblesorchangespathsevenwithasmalltouch.
3)Hittingtheshuttlebeforeitcrossesthenet
-Playersarenotallowedtohittheshuttlebeforeitcrossesthenet.However,playersdo
notneedtowaittheentireshuttletocrossthenetbeforehittingit.Aslongasthepoint
ofcontactisontheirsideofcourt,itislegal.Infact,thefollowthroughofahitcango
overthenet,justnottheinitialpointofcontact.
4)Racketpointingupduringservice
-Racketsmustbepointingindownwarddirectionwhentheshuttleisstruck.Itcannotbe
flateither.Whatthismeansisthatonlyunderhandservesareallowed.Thisfaultis
surprisinglycommonindoublessinceplayersoftentrytogettheshuttleheadingina
downwarddirectioninashortservice.Strikingtheshuttlewiththeracketinaflator
upwardsorientationmakesitmucheasier,butisillegal.

5)Touchingthenet
-Onlytheshuttleisallowedtotouchthenet.Anythingelse,likeyourbody,racket,
clothes,hair,etcarenotallowedtotouchthenetandisconsideredafault.However,
youareallowedtobenearorunderoroverthenetaslongasyoudonotinterferewith
youropponent’sgameplay,suchasduringafollowthroughforanetkill.Duringthis
motion,it’scommonforaplayer’sfoottobeunderthenetandrackettogoaboveand
