This week in Nursery, we were looking into the different types of jungle animals
that we can see on a visit to the Jungle or on Safari. Which jungle animal would you

say is your favourite?

We took a little walk around the school
to practice how to explore using our
binoculars.

Then we made a large collage of a
Zebra using black paper and glue.

Mr Victor gathered the children round 3
to make up stories about some jungle
animals (such as Tigers and Gorillas)

using their imaginations.

This week in Reception S, we are learning and exploring different things in our environment such as
making lanterns for decorations. As you are aware, we learn through play. Some children decided to
investigate colour mixing. In Mathematics, we used 2D shapes to make number sentence; one more
and one less than a given number. In Literacy, the children are practicing to spell their tricky words

correctly when writing and reading.

On Wednesday, Riveka's mum (RR) came and spoke to Reception about the Hindu celebration Diwali.
She showed us how to make Rangolis and brought in sparklers for us to light and celebrate with. She
explained to us that after they celebrate with light, they then share food and offer it up to their
God. Thank you for coming in and sharing with us.

Children in 2R worked enthusiastically in different ways to respond to the question –
How do humans go through a cycle in their lifetimes?
In Geography, the children identified hot and cold places of the world in relation to
the equator and the effect on human cycles.
The children also put their wealth of findings to good use as they wrote an
explanation text on The Human Life Cycle.

In Maths, they measured the heights and weights 6
of humans at different stages of their cycle around

the school. Did you know that humans today are
taller than they were in the past? The children
unraveled this in their research and tried to find

reasons for this change.

In Year 1 we have been learning about time cycles. The children have
enjoyed making clock faces and talking about the day and night
cycle. They also explored the different ways that time was told in
the past – making a sundial and looking out for the shadow of the
gnomon. They showed their understanding of how the earth cycles
(orbits) around the sun in 365 days to give the four seasons.

This week in Year 3S, the children enjoyed researching on the expansive
biodiversity found in the Amazon rainforest as a background to developing
an information text. They focused on the fauna and learnt interesting
facts. One unique fact highlighted by the class was that the chameleon
has a 360o view! This information led into the mathematical knowledge of
angles; the children had the opportunity to use pinboards to show 2D
shapes whilst using properties relating to the type of angles in each to
describe them.

In years 3 - 5 we are working on the understanding of how music is
created using appropriate musical notations.
The children explore the inter-related dimensions of pitch, rhythm and
duration by playing simple tunes on the recorder.

Every Tuesday morning, boys and girls

from the Upper primary perform during

'Tuesday Tunes' to the admiration of

parents coming in to drop off their

children and the other children coming

into the school. 11

KS2 Reading and Comprehension Workshop.

Parents of children in Years 3 – 6 spent some time on Thursday morning
discussing and engaging with resources, methodologies and strategies that are
beneficial to improving the comprehension skills of the children. The Regent
School recognizes that a child’s ability to comprehend is a key skill and has many
benefits such as an increased bank of vocabulary, better understanding of other
cultures, problem solving, reasoning and critical thinking problems.

Reading and comprehension strategies were explained and the parents went

around to see the array of resources and activities on display. The teachers

demonstrated how these could be used and a lot of fun ideas were shared.

REGENT NEWS comments

‘Yes, inspiring, exciting and
very educative….i have learnt
to make the children not just
focus on fiction books but also

on non- fiction books.’
Grace Takwa (child in 3R).
‘I loved the resources that
were shared with us, the

parents.’

Damka Ideye (children in
5S/3A).

It was very interesting to
learn what the kids are
being taught in school. It
helps me help them with
their home work at home

and also apply most of the
teaching methods to

encourage them to read,
understand and

comprehend what they are
reading. It’s not about
reading fast but reading
to understand.
