Different European Cultures

By Austin McVean
Europe is a region in the world known for its
specific cultures within each country. Culture plays
an exceptionally important role in each country’s
history and identity, which is why each culture in
Europe is unique to each individual country.

European countries have the most cultural
influence on other societies throughout the entire
world. Many of these European cultures are known
for their mouthwatering foods, exciting festivals,
popular clothing, and breathtaking cars. The three

major countries with the largest culture and
cultural influences in Europe include Italy, Spain,
and Germany. Although, cultures are specific to
each country, many European countries influence
the culture of other European countries too, and
not just countries from other continents around the

world.

54

Italian culture is known worldwide for tasty foods
specific to Italy, the automobile industry, and popular
designer clothes. The citizens of Italy have invented
two of the most popular foods that are known across
the entire globe: pizza and pasta. These two foods are
great foods because anyone can do anything to them,
and nine times out of ten it turns out outstanding.
Also, in Italy, automobiles are a very important and
precious piece of Italian culture. For example,
multiple prominent car manufacturers like Ferrari,
Maserati, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, and Lamborghini take
great pride in their work with the crafting of
high-performance cars and the attention to detail that
each manufacturer puts into all its cars. Another piece
of Italian culture is their love to show their individual
personalities through their fashion, and most show it
with a luxurious style. As a result of all the culture
Italy has, many believe that they are the country in
the world with the most cultural influence. Spain is a
country in Europe that has great cultural traditions,
which is unique to the Spanish people. Spain has
many singular events that are known worldwide and
are parts of Spanish culture. La Tomatina is a
food-fighting festival where 40,000 participants cram
together into Buñol, Spain, and throw tomatoes at
each other strictly for entertainment purposes.

55

Another popular event in Spanish culture,
includes the Running of the Bulls, where six
fighting bulls run through an 875-meter course in
the middle of Pamplona, Spain, chasing bull
runners. Sports are also another important aspect
in Spanish culture, and the most popular sport is
fútbol. Countless people form lifelong
friendships around Spanish fútbol, especially
when the country’s two most popular teams,
Barcelona and Real Madrid, compete in the La
Liga Division. Finally, Spanish dancing is
another unique activity in the culture. The most
recognized Spanish dance is the Flamenco, where
the dancers express their deepest emotions in
order to tell a story. As shown, Spain is a country
in Europe with a unique culture that is specific to
Spaniards and their way of life. Finally, Germany
is a country in Europe that has an assortment of
festive events, flavorsome foods, quality cars,
and thrilling sports, which make the culture
specific to the German's way of life. Every year
in Germany there is a festival known as

56

Oktoberfest, which is held in Munich, Germany.
This festival is a part of German culture and is
celebrated worldwide with a variety of different
German beers, German foods, and Bavarian culture.
This festival lasts three weeks and ends on the first
Sunday in October. Another important piece of
German culture is their food. Germany is known for
its 1,500 varieties of sausages including Kochwurst,
Brühwurst, and Rohwurst, as well as its schnitzel
and spätzle. German culture is known for its
high-quality sports cars, which German
manufacturers takes great pride in. Audi, BMW,
Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche are four of the most
popular cars around the world that have been made
by these proud German manufactures. Many car
enthusiasts in Germany love these quality sports cars
because they can test out the speed of the car on the
Autobahn, which is a highway in Germany, in which
two-thirds of it has no speed limit. Finally, one of
the greatest pieces of German culture is their love
for football. German culture is known to have
serious fans for the football clubs that play in the
Bundesliga, as well as the Men’s and Women’s
German National Team. Germany is also the only
country that both the women’s and men’s teams
have won the FIFA World Cup, which gives fans a
reason to take such pride in their nation's teams.

Furry Friends For Finals!

Georgia Military College wants to thank The
Alliance of Therapy Dogs (ATD) for another
pawsome experience! Augusta’s Campus has
“gone to the dogs”, as we welcomed four

adorable and nurturing canines from the
Alliance of Therapy Dogs to help debunk stress
for the students as finals came close. ATD is a

58

Volunteer organization of dedicated therapy
dog handlers and their dogs, whose mission is
to share smiles with others. Canine therapy
visits can increase overall emotional
well-being and stimulate the mind. Studies
have shown a decrease in blood pressure and
stress levels. To learn more about our furry
friends at the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, please

Canal Field Trip

On October first, Professor Lamarre was generous
in taking 17 history students to gather at the
Discovery Center at Enterprise Mill for an
informative and relaxing boat canal tour. The tour
guide was entertaining in addition to being
extremely knowledgeable in explaining Augusta’s
role during the Civil War and other modern
historical events. Everyone gave nothing but
positive feedback about what the tour had to
offer. While many students were interested in the
environment around them, one student even
expressed their desire to return and explore
further than just the guided tour. Overall, many
thanked their professor and have learned quite a
bit from the experience. Here at the Augusta
campus, the institution provides the opportunity
to those who enjoy learning beyond the
classroom.
