FOREWORD FROM THE DIRECTOR

This is the IIUM Press Annual Report where it’s aimed to represent the operation, activity and
achievement throughout the year 2020. This past year we have had to face a crisis of
pandemic COVID-19 like never before with our whole way of life completely disrupted. IIUM
Press quickly made it a priority to be in close contact with publisher’s agencies and bodies
such as MAPIM, MABOPA, MBKM and all book distributors in Malaysia.

Publishers in every corner of the world and in Malaysia especially have stepped up to the
challenge, finding new ways to bring books to readers, researcher, teachers and students. We
have been generous and responsible as a university publisher, often making our publications
and scholars resources available for the IIUM community and to the public. I have always been
proud to be part of IIUM Press, but the last 12 months have made IIUM Press prouder still.

This report shows how IIUM Press has not stopped in its efforts to promote its publications,
articles, copyright and struggle to achieve its annual objectives. Indeed, its shows how much
we have achieved and how much we are looking to the future. Never before has the IIUM
Press undertaken such an exercise of establishing a clear picture of book publications from so
many different angles. I would like to take this opportunity to thanks to the University
Management, IIUM Press staff, authors, all publishers and our book distributor’s partners,
MAPIM, MABOPA and MBKM for their continued support for IIUM Press, even under such difficult
circumstances. Let us pray to Allah S.W.T to overcome this crisis, together.

OVERVIEW 2020

IIUM Press as the University publisher is one of the few sectors that one can
imagine could stand to benefit from the pandemic crisis. With people staying at
home with fewer distractions, they might have more time for books; however, it
turns out that doesn’t necessarily translate into more book sales for
publishers. They began asking how badly the crisis had hit the industry.

And almost all book sales were online from outlets like Shopee, LAZADA and other
marketplace platforms which inevitably favors a winner-takes-all publishing
model. As a University publisher like ours, there’s been a short-term hit because we
rely heavily on the direct books sale, dealing with a student, researchers and they
were closed.

Ahead of the Curve

The crisis hit at a time when most publishers were already looking to build up their e-commerce
business, and the book industry is probably ahead of the curve there compared to many retails
players. But COVID-19 has been called “the Great Accelerator” and that’s true in the books
business as much as anywhere else. People are buying more books online and once habits
have changed, there’s no going back.

What about E-Books?

The sale of e-books has risen, but readers are creatures of habit, and the vast bulk of them still
choose to have a physical book in their hands. It is changing, but not as fast as the movement
to buying those books online. We’ve become an online business almost overnight. I’d say that’s
the significant change.

are in the midst to uploading more
eBooks in this platform in 2021.

We hope that, with this digital version,
IIUM Press could spreading the
knowledge to the ummah and readers
all over the world.

BOOK ACQUISITION

Book Editing

The book's editor, in collaboration with the author, spends months helping guide the content
flow of the book and the language of the text, whipping the manuscript into readable and
publishable shape. At the same time, the editor is also working with his or her colleagues (as
well as the author) to come up with a brilliant title and subtitle that will entice readers to the
book. The book editorial process itself has several stages and the different members of the
editorial team perform different functions.

In 2020, editorial unit had received a total of 77 manuscripts including 15 proposals. It has
increased 49% of a total manuscript received compared to the year 2019. The increase
number of the proposal received indicate that IIUM Press had scuffled the crisis greatly.

BOOK PUBLICATIONS

Book Production

After the manuscript leaves editorial, it goes into the hands of production. The steps of
production from edited manuscript to finished book involve a host of hands copy editing the
text, designing, and laying out the pages of the book, determining its size and page count,
working to get the cover of the book designed, and seeing the book through printing and
binding or e-book creation.

Even though the progress and publishing development movement is very slow affected by the
crisis, IIUM Press had taken the challenge to ensure the production run as usual. The table
below shows the total of book production for the year 2020.

The first print and new edition publications in 2020 for IIUM Press is higher than 2019. The
translation book project was started since 2019, and the printed copies is the added category
of book published by IIUM Press rather than scholarly book.

ARABIC EDITORIAL

In this section, some of the Arabic manuscripts was received from the local and international
publishers. The edited manuscripts will be turned into a book or a textbook. There is also a
mutual agreement (MOU /MOA) established between IIUM Press with Arabic publishers in
publishing the manuscript into book or textbook.

IIUM JOURNAL

IUM Journal Publication is the publishing arm of the International Islamic University Malaysia
(IIUM). IIUM promotes research and education by efficiently coordinating the publication of
research projects; maintaining strategic alliances with distributors and other publishers; and
regularly participating in book exhibitions and sales.

To this date, IIUM Journal Publication has published more than 590 issues of various journals. As
of December 2020, there are 31 scholarly peer reviewed journals. Some of them are ISI
indexed, Scopus indexed, MyCite indexed, Arab indexed and other various indexed. IIUM
Journal is a member of Crossref and implemented DOI to some journals.

An academic or scholarly journal is a periodical publication in which scholarship relating to a
particular academic discipline is published. Academic journals serve as permanent and
transparent forums for the presentation, scrutiny, and discussion of research. They are usually

World Book Capital City

Sharjah, UAE, hand over the mantle of World Book Capital City to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia
namely Kuala Lumpur World Book Capital 2020 (KLWBC2020).
In 2020, IIUM Press has taking initiative to be part of the Committee and collaboration partner
for KLWBC2020 with MAPIM, MABOPA, DBP, Perpustakaan Kuala Lumpur and Kuala Lumpur
City Hall (DBKL) in scheduling many of book activities. Unfortunately, KL’s programme was
severely disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to that, many of the activity has been
done through online webinar.
Tbilisi in Georgia will be the next World Book Capital City from 23 April 2021, and UNESCO
recently announced that Guadalajara would be the 2022 Capital.

IIUM TRANSLATION BOOK PROJECT

IIUM Press had established the Translation Project Unit. This unit is responsible to coordinate and
manage the translation project and dealing with the international publishers. Despites from
“buying”, the unit also "sells" books—or, more specifically, the right to publish a book in
alternate formats, different languages, and to adapt it for different media).
The objectives of the IIUM Translation Book Project are as follows:

 To increase interest in translation and reading activities among the students, academic
communities and public.

 To increase the translation publishing work in various fields and genres in order to provide
more reading material for everyone.

 To increase a collection of IIUM publication in various languages.
 To enhance the visibility of the IIUM Press publications through collaboration with local

and international publishers.
 To expand the promotion and marketing of Malaysian translation publishing works

generally and specifically IIUM Press publications locally and abroad.

Marketing & Promotion

While the book is being edited, designed and produced, the marketing unit working to
prepare for launching the book into the marketplace. The marketing unit works with the
editorial unit to develop tools (like seasonal book catalogues) and marketing strategies and
plans to help get the books in front of the account book buyers. A book's online marketing and
social media also usually falls under the marketing unit.

To say that COVID-19 has impacted book marketing in 2020 for publishers and
authors. By this point, we’re all familiar with shuttered bookstores, cancelled and
reimagined events, postponed release dates, unpredictable sales trends, and
packed online calendars. And realities, IIUM Press has continue to shift.
And acceptance this doesn’t mean book marketing in 2020 is doomed than usual in a volatile
market—it’s just doomed differently.
IIUM Press not just stay put, but has double up its efforts to ensure the book
published reach to the readers. It is the IIUM book shop responsible to market and
promoting the book publication to the readers.

Books store

The book shop "sell in" IIUM Press publications to the many and varied places who carry books—
from small independent bookstores to wholesalers and book vendors.

All of these processes work toward the "launch" of the book into the marketplace, and many
(sales, publicity, marketing) continue afterward as well to help "sell-through" the book—that is,
get it out of the bookseller's hands and into the hands of the consumer.

ACTIVITY UPDATE

This year, not much activities, events or workshop that we can managed. The spike
of COVID 19 and implementation of CMCO affected the activity that has been
planned. In this new norms, there are about an online activities that IIUM Press
organized and taking part. More organizers and publishers also manage more
online programme and activities recently.

IIUM Press online book talk…

As the impact and crisis of COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting
lockdowns became clear, Translation Unit launched a series of
translation online book talk with publishers, readership and translator
society — sharing the challenges, knowledge on translation project
and how they were working to produce a good translation book.
The series also included a conversation with the translators, book writers and translator
facilitators, examining the translation book on the wider literature perspective. It’s also sharing
on thought of multilateralism, the freedom to publish, copyright and certain aspect from
historical, technology and Islamic. The series proved a valuable resource for IIUM Press followers
and a testimony to the resilience and innovation of IIUM Press publishers in Malaysia.
