Foreword from the Director
This is the report where it’s aimed to represent the operation,
activity and achievement of IIUM Press throughout the year
2021. In a year that was plagued with uncertainty and
challenges posed by the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, we
achieved wonderful success and delivered on our target in
publishing the IIUM publications compared to the year before.
Sustained by our realization, we are now shifting gears to
focus on translation, copyrights and seizing opportunities that
arise. IIUM Press also has collaborations and publishing
networking with International Islamic Publisher (ISPA) Istanbul,
Turkey, International publishers for translation publications,
UTUSAN and Institut Terjemahan Buku Malaysia (ITBM).
That year also we had plan a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with international
publisher such as with UNISSA Press, Brunei, Prince of Songkla University, Patani
Campus Thailand, University Darussalam, Gontor Indonesia and we are in the
midst of discussion to have the translation copyrights with Turkey publisher. The
objectives of the MOA and the copyrights agreement are to have the publishing
collaboration in producing the publications with international publishers.
IIUM Press quickly made it a priority to be in close contact with publisher’s
agencies and bodies such as MAPIM, MABOPA, MBKM and all book distributors in
Malaysia. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the University Management,
IIUM Press staff, authors, all publishers and our book distributor’s partners,
MAPIM, MABOPA and MBKM for their continued support for IIUM Press, even under
such difficult circumstances.
ROOSFA HASHIM
Director, IIUM Press

FAST FACT – IIUM PRESS
Overview 2021
COVID-19 has brought a new and even more immediately daunting set of
stresses to these institutions, including the expectation of large budget cuts;
growing reluctance among students to pay full tuition fees for online
education; decreasing enrolments of international students who pay full fees;
and questions of how and whether to reopen
The online book sales have exploded during the COVID crisis as well as IIUM
Press itself. In the five months from Aug and ending Dec 31, IIUM Press book
sales have increased and the monthly sales remain above RM20k.
However, early 2021 had given a negative short-term impact on us, but seems to
no longer be significantly impacting our book sales after we successfully
deliver the method by online sales. It went well.

ACTIVITY UPDATE
In these new norms, there is an online activity that IIUM Press organized and took part
in. More organizers and publishers also manage more online programmes and
activities recently.
The pandemic COVID19 has affected the book industry, although the impact on the
video gaming, streaming video, streaming music, and films sectors has varied widely.
Homebound readers have shifted to online discovery and digital books. The publishers
that have been most successful during this time have been those with the capability to
communicate directly to readers, book buyers and distributors.
