PERMENDIKBUD . This module presents the material to enhance your
knowledge about what present continuous, past continuous and future
continuous tense are , their structures, language features, as well how to
create a simple continuous tenses.
2. Problem Exposure
While teaching English lesson for nineth grade of junior high school
students, there is one material related to continuous tenses, which when
viewed in learning indicators, students are expected to be able to find the
definition present continuous, past continuous and future continuous tense,
their social functions and text structures. On the other hand, the students are
also expected make written and spoken transactional that is related with
present continuous, past continuous dan future continuous tense. But,in the
fact, students still have difficulty in achieving the indicators. There are some
obstacles that can be seen, they are:
a. Some students are still difficult in rearranging jumble words into
good sentence
b. Some students are still difficult to change present continuous tense
to past contiuous or future continuous tense
c. Some students are still difficult in making simple present
continuous, past continuous and future continuous tense

Based on the problem stated above, the concept of the material taught to

The past continuous tense is one which is used very frequently in the English
language and is made up of an -ing verb preceded by the past tense of the verb ‘to be’.
For example ‘the animals were running gracefully through the field’. This is an easy

more freely about the past. The past continuous tense, or past progressive, tense
describes an action or situation that began in the past and is still going on in the
present time. The past continuous is used:

made up of an -ing verb preceded by the past tense of the verb ‘to be’. The past continuous is
used:
1. To describe parallel actions.
The past progressive is often used to denote an action that was interrupted by an event, or
for two actions taking place in parallel.
2. To describe what someone was doing at a particular point in time.
3. To express interrupted action in the past.
4. To describe repetition and irritation.
